Is the biggest stumbling block to religion my next guest says it is god.
Rabbi Jamie -- goal AK AB adventure rabbi says many people just can't buy into a god of judgment she's created -- cutting edge model of synagogue life.
And her newest book is the god upgrade find 120% -- -- quality and Judaism's 5000 year old tradition.
-- rabbi chronicle joins me here right now.
-- I'm thrilled to be on your program I so appreciated the conversations that you always bring it to the forefront.
I think we know it I know it looks -- -- was just don't look like a rabbi in and did -- that a lot well.
And a part of my homework is upgrading the concept of religious right might as well start with what -- a rabbi.
You're you're booking and and Europe approach is basically targeting if you if you pardon upon sort of bit the wandering into the people who really don't.
The tennis of the faith that it's it's just not for them anymore is that right.
Well you know I think -- you and I will look will agree that religion is one of the really important foundations of our culture it's what teaches us our morals and our values.
And I pitch 14%.
To 14% of Americans believe in what's called -- distant god.
A -- who doesn't intervene in the daily workings of our life who maybe got the universe spelling but he's been hands off ever sense.
Larry -- how -- that white people have such a problem with god in you because you say that that that is the main stumbling block.
To -- people's faith is the idea of god why.
Well it really.
Yet the reality is changed drastically through the centuries and they think that -- -- the one theology that some people these 24% have a problem with.
Is this guy that comes down here and intervenes in our daily lives that -- us and punishes us based on our actions.
It's for some people it's very hard to see that as actually how the world works.
And so what I want is doing this book -- show how religion can be meaningful.
Even if you don't believe and that particular dot concept because the reality is is a lot of other god concepts out there that they -- -- that god is radically changed from the very beginning of biblical times.
You say that it's radically changed the concept of god well.
-- for example let's look at the beginning of the Bible let's look at the Abraham story.
In those early stories that's very much like -- their list.
God says to Abraham you Abraham it's time that you leave your father's home you know -- -- now you need to go out and found a new religion and so god -- Abraham and got this really that Ismail.
Nails gonna be just -- -- -- actually makes it's my nail into a whole other nation because that's the therapist but I can't even campus the super powers you know.
And only god god changes as we become not just one person interacting with god but a whole nation interacting with god.
Thank god becomes the rule giver and now we have -- god that it is we eat into acting with the people very different -- -- Problem not with god but with us because it's he has -- -- we have read Genesis it seems as though.
God is trying to school his creation.
Trying to help them develop not try to force -- to do anything but just kind of take them along.
So in that sense you know is the problem always existed in Austin not with god.
I think -- PR actually talk yeah I don't feel I think that.
We yeah when we're talking that religion we tend to talk about just one small statement.
Of what religion as this very raffle judgmental god and they don't think that encompasses all of -- theology.
And I think we as religious people he's -- better job of getting the -- base and the point of religion out there.
And not having it always have to come through this idea that we pray to god and god makes things happen you know what this.
-- -- sort of Judy is a mistake because the Christian take on -- would be a god of grace which is a little different.
The idea and they don't look at Gaza judgmental gone but as a god who is full of grace.
And readily forgive us so -- are you really just focusing on on on Jews.
Let me tell you he let me tell -- story.
After the earthquake in Haiti he was it gives a missionary that was on -- today.
And -- be saved after ten -- -- being buried beneath the rubble and the journalist said to him why do you see you know how did you get out of there.
And he said I prayed to god and god answered my prayer and save me.
And I felt.
-- why did journalist asked him how you missionary friend who is ten feet away and wasn't saved what his prayers not good enough.
I feel like for some people that missionaries theology works but other people they hear that story and eight throw out religion altogether.
And we're not trying to say he's you don't have to believe in a god who actually.
Answering individual prayers and saving that one missionary and not saving the other.
To find a way -- religion can be needle in your life and in this book I demonstrate those ways.
