I'm now joined by Iowa governor Terry Branstad is in his second stint as chief executive of this state the governor.

Served four terms from.

But 1983.

To 1999.

And came back to run and -- win again last year welcome governor.

I'm glad to be back well -- and you're welcome this with such a cool day today one dollar check made that we need this kind of weather.

We need he -- to grow the corn where the leading corn growing state.

This is this what we need to grow the corn this year all right what about drawing a political campaign ahead of the Iowa Caucuses there are some candidates out there.

Who are saying that Iowa.

Won't matter as much this year -- either skipping it or marginalizing it what do you say to them.

They're making a big mistake those people have done in the past like Rudy Giuliani.

Regretted -- it didn't work I think it's important to come here and compete and and the nice thing about Iowa is hey give.

-- even if you're not very well known if you can beat expectations here you can be one of the top three you can boost -- opportunities in the rest of the country.

What about speaking directly to the other states were trying to move up on the calendar there are number problem -- you know there's.

There's a bunch from Florida Georgia the calendars a little bit in -- when it comes the GOP.

Well I think the parties both the Republican and democratic parties have said Iowa caucus should be first New Hampshire primary second.

And then I think you've got.

South Carolina and and the -- in there.

-- I think that this system has worked well I think we'll be mistake.

Those that try to move up will move our caucuses up New Hampshire move its primary up.

It's not gonna work so I think we need -- respect and recognize the process.

That has been in place for some time former Governor Sarah Palin was in Iowa this week she was a big supporter of yours in this last campaign do you think she's running -- stuff.

Well it's a good question I think you've got everybody guessing but they cheated -- premiere over.

Movie in -- tell us a great place it's a great that's community very Republican.

She was very well received there and and so I don't know whether she's running or not but certainly if she does -- I think she'd be very formidable but you would know whether she was making the calls to the key Republicans in this state.

The big money people the people who could move mountains politically she's not doing that but then again she's very unconventional in the way she does think she endorsed me over.

You know on Twitter itself.

I didn't even know what's coming she did that it over -- so.

She'll do the unexpected and and I.

-- certainly wouldn't want to predict whether or not she's going to be a candidate.

-- -- just wrapped up your state legislative session tonight you've struck a deal.

It doesn't seem like it's a great deal for Republicans MI wrong and that are well -- -- we made a dramatic change in the way this they've been doing business.

For the last several years have been spending way more than we're taking and we passed a budget that is.

That is that only restore stability and predictability.

-- sustainable over the long term.

What's called off their property tax cut that you wanted to have them that well because the Democrats want to spend too much money we weren't willing to do that.

I'm gonna continue to campaign to reduce the property taxpayers -- -- commercial property.

But and you know we're gonna have we we got control of the house not the senate.

And if that senate Democrats continue.

To take this stance of the unwillingness to reduce its very high commercial property tax I think their days are not meant was there -- back down on this issue about abortion.

Medicaid funds used for abortions and University of Iowa hospitals it's my understanding it actually that.

They reached a compromise language it basically takes the exceptions out of the law.

So a lot of people feel that that.

This is it is certainly.

Doesn't lose any ground and may actually gain some ground for those people -- want to protect innocent human life which I certainly.

Believe is a program that's obviously interstate but a lot of governors are having this give and take not only with.

With unions but trying to get their budgets under control -- state that has money in the bank.

We don't know now that's not true they it would we had a budget that.

Were they were spending one time money for ongoing expenses we inherited a big budget mess and we have straighten it out right there -- going to be.

It's gonna be sustainable for the long time and also for the first time since 1983.

We have a two year budget.

And we have a budget that spends -- and we -- again.

I think the Republicans -- control house for working with me to getting something that sustainable I think it's gonna position us well for the future that we also got our new.

Partnership for economic progress we didn't get the property tax reduction but we'll fight to get that in the future acts and we'll see you and -- in just six weeks from tonight.

That's going to be a fun event we expect a record turnout.

Before that Strobl all right governor thanks very much --
