You very much.
It is a done deal He spoke in the Rose Garden at the White House not long ago curious talking about tax reform.
Everyone's gonna have to ship it.
That's only fair.
That's the -- all be fighting for during the next phase of this process.
And in the coming months -- continued also to fight for what the American people care most about.
New jobs higher wages.
And faster economic growth.
Joining us now from -- Thompson former governor of you -- and now 2012 GOP candidate for the presidency.
A governor thanks for joining us -- you have a unique distinction in the field as being the one person who worked within this administration as ambassadors China.
How do you respond to the president's speech this afternoon.
-- Shannon -- it's a pleasure to be with you.
Let me just say that speeches service certain rhetorical purpose but this is -- time that calls for leadership.
We should have had leadership on this issue well in advance of where we did there was no reason for us to wait until the eleventh hour plus in order to get something done.
I think our system deserves a whole lot better and whether it was the president who didn't stand up.
Early enough to find a solution here -- whether -- some of my opponents who have shown very little leadership on this.
The fact of the matter is the president has had two and a half years to do the most important thing the American people expect him to do.
That's expand the economy that's create jobs that's infuse.
Send a sense of confidence into our economy we just don't have that today.
And governor you have sent -- those who died or wait until the debate is over a lack leadership.
A lot of folks think that that.
Is a direct mark at former governor Mitt Romney.
Are you willing to now publicly call him out -- -- the one you're referring to him.
Well He certainly is one who waited right till the very end until effectively a decision had been made.
This is a significant issue before our country we have never defaulted on our debt before in a hundred years we haven't seen -- ratings downgrade.
The thought that.
Up candidate for the presidency of the United States wouldn't be willing to stand up during a time when leadership is needed like never before.
And to embrace or put forward a solution that will get us to where we need to be I think it's very very telling.
I have to compliment speaker Boehner on his leadership I thought He moved us along in directions that.
Cut that allowed us to meet our obligations it was unthinkable that the United States of America.
25% of the global GDP the largest financial services economy in the entire world would not stand up and meet its obligations.
So the idea that we had speaker Boehner putting forth solutions that would allow us to meet our obligations not default.
Cut and move us forward on.
-- a reasonable discussion on a balanced budget amendment with which this country so desperately needs.
And hopefully moving toward real medic -- entitlement reform.
Which is going to be by a large the bulk of what needs to happen in order for us to get debt and spending under control.
That is the cancer that is growing in this country that needs to be radiated these to be cut out it needs to be excised.
And I'm encouraged by the early step that has been made to meet our obligations I'm encouraged by the steps now there will be taken to cut in a meaningful way.
We have much distance to go though in terms of where this country needs to be in terms of the revenue side of the balance sheet and -- that is what are we gonna do that growth what are we gonna do about stimulating this economy that creates jobs what are we gonna do about infusing.
A new level of confidence in this country that allows us for us not to lose that that.
That lead we've traditionally had in the world.
-- also criticized others in the field for taking what -- saw as a crash and burn approach.
By my count there are three members of congress currently running in the field they include Michelle -- Ron Paul and -- is the potter.
Pollen Bachmann voted no to this deal you think that was irresponsible.
-- a plot them on taking a position early on I think that.
That is commendable.
I do however disagree with them on the idea that we would not do everything possible to live up to our obligations our financial obligations.
The idea that we would accept.
As the shining star economy in the world at a time when our economy needs to build confidence into -- system.
Expand and create jobs.
And get people rallied around an economic direction.
I thoughts stepping up to meet our financial obligations was critically important at this point in time so I happen to disagree with them.
In terms of the overall approach but I happen a compliment them on taking a position early on.
Governor -- give you a chance to respond or expand -- expand upon an and some remarks that you made.
With regard to congresswoman Michelle Bachmann you said she makes for good copy and good photography.
I'll listen that.
I was I was trying to complement to representatives Bachmann.
Calling somebody photogenic.
Which we are all that photogenic.
She's an elected official she's doing a great job but I have high regard for.
Well we will see both the -- a whole lot more out there on the campaign trail governor Jon Huntsman thanks much for joining us -- Shannon.
Honored to be with you.
