And joining me now for his first interviews since the news broke about his extramarital affair in 2009 is former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford governor appreciate being here thank you very much pleasure.
You know it's -- his.
-- read a lot about your life.
It it's a visit dichotomy here it's it's almost.
I won't use the term split personality does that's that's a little harsh but.
I read about your background.
And your family life.
Your life growing up your values the things you did as governor you -- faith.
-- staunch Christian conservative.
Or whether or conservative governor.
What -- what what's how do you explain the two sides of your life.
You know I had.
I think the -- -- -- 94 dollar question of all of life which is the reality of our own humanity.
None of us are perfect.
And I think that if there's any lesson learned here for me over the last two years and a whole lot of reflection.
It is the significance of God's grace and grace of others because the reality is everyone of us are imperfect.
And -- everything you did was bring you were really on a path.
We're a lot of people talking about you may one day be the president of the United States -- you know about that talk from.
-- -- and I don't think it's particularly constructive to look back on the mind of -- of life.
I think the reality is that you are where you war.
And I think the important part is sort of looking forward of you know she would have I learned over these last two years.
And and it would say that He has to do a friend of the day you know I probably have ward offers a human being than I ever have probably smaller canvas to paint on here at least in the short term.
-- you know that that's -- reality of every one of our lives is.
It may be a financial crisis it may be a personal crisis it maybe you good and the laundry list of different things -- you know I used to read the Paper.
And I would read it and say you know loser loser idiot more on you know how do they make these mistakes -- now say that by the grace of god -- You know its interest because you see this happens -- politicians more recently Anthony Weiner.
Before that John Edwards is running for president of the United States.
And Bill Clinton in the Oval Office.
Of those the people that you used to refer to when you read the Paper what a loser what an idiot because I I did see those comments you made.
Who I'm not I'm not a -- they -- person understand generally.
And and in again I keep going back to lessons learned.
Whether it's on the judgment front on on the again I think that probably the more constructive thing is to look at you know.
And not what one might have -- -- I had to get things wrong but.
Again what did you learn from and again a wealth of lessons He He saved that you probably more prepared now and you.
To be.
A leader in a sense.
There's been a lot of talk about maybe you reentering the political world of jumping ahead a little bit -- -- considering that no I'm not but but what what I'm saying is.
I don't think in some ways you've really lived until you've failed hopefully not -- a monumental level.
But I think that there is a a period of introspection time in the desert.
That you cannot appreciate.
-- you've been there and I think that you know for those of us who were achievers and in my life who served in one way rather Linear nature.
You never stopped long enough to really do the soul searching that comes with a time that this.
We talk a little bit about for example.
The conflict that -- He knew him.
You have in this relationship with this woman in Argentina.
And these letters that you had in emails back and forth between the two of you.
You know I'd I'd I'd read one of -- and it talks about Europe you knew -- being considered as a possible vice presidential choice of John McCain.
-- at another point you're quoting the Bible and know lettered T a mistress and I'm reading this and I'm.
I'm trying to put that together and you know could you do well I mean.
I would say that the word mistress kind of -- financial level of support which there was -- -- she's from.
You know.
Wealthy family.
Fine -- -- that way.
I wouldn't find his mistress I fell.
-- when I was real you have an affair yeah yeah and George.
A fellow with some of their shouldn't have.
But I think that what everybody focuses on is.
That moment.
There were ten years before that were happening this person and she became -- she was nothing more than -- -- it was purely platonic.
I didn't see it -- and she didn't see it -- But it happened in I think that the bigger question is not in that moment none of her attribute to not what attracted me her.
But again I go back to lessons learned and I would say this to men out there.
If you wanna fireproof your marriage I think there -- a couple of absolutely vital things that you do that that I have learned here what last I would say one.
I got my priorities off you know I.
You know for twenty years -- invested my life.
In the trying to make an impact in the direction this country was going to debt deficit spending.
And I thought that was my calling -- -- used to joke you know -- to say you know.
If they actually figured out what they pay you an hourly basis -- working for a whole lot less than the minimum wage.
I think that is me and we often times define -- calling what we do.
It's true if you're an athlete if you're in business if you're in in media if you're in the world of politics.
I think the reality now after this last afterlife is.
As important as that was that was not my calling in life and this is gonna sound weird that -- in the -- -- least two years put.
I would say now my calling in life is.
He is to seek you first God's kingdom and his righteousness and then all this other stuff will be added to you.
It's to love god with all -- -- -- minding your neighbor is -- yourself.
I think that if you get that is true north and east south and west are well defined.
If you get -- on on what -- real calling is if you Begin to define it is your work is important is that might be.
Then a lot of other things fall out of place.
I think there's probably a tunnel lessons a lot of people could learn from him because under the same -- you have I've looked at the Paper.
Idiot if you hit the idiot.
And you know and sometimes maybe it's judgmental and maybe -- some lessons to learn here.
And maybe I think a lot of people to learn a lot tonight we'll talk a little bit we'll talk about that talk about your future and him what that whole.
