Several GOP presidential candidates have a lot riding on the Ames Iowa debate and straw poll this week.

Here now to preview the week ahead is Fox News digital politics editor Chris firewall great to see appropriate head on -- the Hawkeye State.

I'm ready I've got my corn -- implements all packed up -- -- -- drawn out there's going to be good.

Excellent are right and we would just chatting a little bit about it they're so much preparation that goes into these debates how all the questions potentially.

-- -- have a different focus based on is so much news in the last 48 hours.

Well you had it worse than anybody else when you did the debate in South Carolina because Osama bin Laden was killed literally days before the debate took place we've had a huge news weekend but the tragedy that the -- the seals and Afghanistan.

And the S&P downgrade of US credit -- so what that means is that we.

Run back and rip up the questions that we had before.

We start all over again.

So that we can make sure that were right on top of the news because a big part of -- test about being president is.

Can you react to things is things change and so we wanna test them on the latest the very latest thing.

Writing have a couple of members of congress who actually taking parts that they actually are voting on these things that had a part in what happened with the debt downgrade those kinds of things and -- talk about.

Those things may be a little more poignantly with them.

-- let's talk about who really has to do well here in Iowa and kind of -- being -- the straw -- following the debates.

This is Tim Pawlenty is make or break moment you heard -- FOX News Sunday today.

Laying it out.

He needs to demonstrate toughness He needs to demonstrate that he's hard core because that's what the Republican electorate wants to hear they want toughness they want hardness.

And Minnesota nice isn't gonna cut it.

The problem for governor Pawlenty is that there's probably only -- taken out Iowa.

And you have he's gonna have to win that caucus if He wants to look viable.

Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann has shown up is performing very well in Iowa he's trying to beater on the ground and -- organizer but when you get down to it.

Unless he's able to take on Mitt Romney in an effective way who's the front runner who is a more moderate Republican he's not gonna be able to rally the people on the right.

That He needs to take on Mitt Romney and make this a two man race.

And it in the last -- in Greenville we gave him an opportunity to address some of those things of Romney He didn't seem to really wanna take it head on He was mr.

nice guy so we'll see if we get a different version.

-- let's talk about Romney the fact that he's -- just sort of checked out of Iowa.

Well you know -- the thing for Mitt Romney is this.

If I work is is a stronghold for religious conservatives.

They love Michelle Bachmann they love it Tim Pawlenty there evangelical Christians there waiting to see what Rick Perry finally decides to do down in Texas.

That's the base there they love Ron Paul to the home schoolers came out for Ron Paul.

This is now where Romney can succeed but.

That doesn't mean it's not important -- He has to show He has to at least I would say get third place when all is said and done so that's why you're gonna see him on stage that's why you're gonna see him.

Out there showing the flag in Iowa because He has to for more moderate Republicans and I will be there to.

All right safe travels have a great time we're watching 9 o'clock on Thursday night o'clock eastern for the big debate and of course this couple coverage as well yeah.
