The rise of freedom now.

For months we've witnessed remarkable progress at the World Trade Center site the buildings are going up there towering over everything.

And the 9/11 memorial is scheduled to open about a month from today.

On the ten year remembrance of the attacks of 9/11 but.

The place barely resembles the initial plans for the site.

You may recall seeing renderings like these is part of design competitions for both the site and the memorial some of the submissions were more practical than others.

The winning plan -- a wedge of lights which would appear every 9/11.

The first designs also called for a cultural center and buildings that would extend over the memorial but all of that changed along with so much more.

As the design evolved over time.

This is a symbol of freedom.

But this simple which He first saw in 2003.

Was entirely different than the one rising over lower Manhattan today.

We have a phrase and architecture is called going back to the boards.

And that's what we really -- due to start all over again.

David chiles initially designed to sites tallest skyscraper as the warped reflection of the statue of liberty.

But in 2005 the police -- the building would be too close to the street we've been concerned about security there for quite a while forcing a major change of plans.

You can either you know.

Wrapping up pay careful won't go home or you can say -- I understand I mean this is nothing nobody want to slow this down but these with the fact.

So child's simplify the design paying homage to the original towers.

-- to -- the right answer and I think it's better for designer.

Fundamentally a problem -- Michael -- -- is solved.

Dozens of problems as architect of the 9/11 memorial.

Including the placement of the victims' names the names previously worked as slaves some thirty feet below -- Behind the waterfall and it was always seen as a profound moment that moment up walking up to this threshold that separates the living from Baghdad.

But security and money concerns forced him to move everything above ground.

I feel that the -- in many ways been enriched by bringing their names off the air design it's all about addressing constraints.

And any projects.

And -- the constraints you know very simple time and budget and a project like this the constraints are much greater very great.

The planners are still making smaller tweaks all the time earlier this year they dropped plans to install a special type of glass over the concrete base of -- one World Trade Center.

And even the name of that building has changed in an attempt to make it more marketable companies around the world they -- refer -- -- -- the Freedom Tower but simply by its address one world trade.
