I hope nobody took that is -- an angry.
Because I have heard people say no when it you know you to eat Tea Party types -- dollar angry we're not angry.
Were indignant.
Were indignant at the arrogance of the audacity of this administration.
Showing.
That was Texas governor Rick Perry he's indignant -- talent he's not gonna take it anymore and this is power play I'm Chris -- -- welcome back to Washington we're back here in the beautiful confines of studio three here in the DC bureau and we're back from Iowa where the Republican field got all shook up and we're gonna break down the consequences of that today we're gonna talk about the president's.
Bus tour through the midwest as He tries to get the political -- -- back we're gonna talk about his new job approval ratings.
We're gonna break -- -- -- we're gonna put it in perspective easily helping us do that is -- -- former RNC communications director a Republican strategist.
He's going to be helping it and explain these wild and belief Republicans to us but first.
Before we get into that loneliness Internet let me introduce you to one of your dear friends Ed Henry our chief White House correspondent who is with the president.
Or where the president's going to be in Minnesota.
Brother Henry how we -- today.
Good to see -- Chris Doug and hello Internet as well.
I Internet.
All right so why is for a black President Obama gonna be in Minnesota today.
Well I you know it's funny Chris because -- did say this is not a campaign event as the official bad.
-- by taxpayers doesn't present a United States in either party.
Does have the right to speak directly to the American people -- town hall events like this out in the heartland -- here YouTube behind me as you can now.
The couple minutes ago Bruce Springsteen.
Democratic campaign staples.
It is one -- for sure that this campaign is on we saw that on the Republican side over the weekend kicked into high gear.
Now it is on this side as well.
And in fact that I think what he's trying to do.
Is connect directly with the American people out here in the heartland MX and you know we have our own boss the -- And as -- were driving in here to cannon ball from Minneapolis about an hour's drive.
There -- corn fields on the right.
-- pick up trucks on the laughed.
You realize pretty quickly -- just like Darth I guess a variation you're not Washington anymore He wants to get out of Washington he's been.
In -- in Washington for weeks now dealing with the debt crisis dealing with the jobs crisis -- all the crises you've been dealing with.
This -- been a bad run of bad few weeks for this president.
Evidenced in the Gallup poll.
Down to a 39% approval rating and I'll tell you real quick there's.
-- to a 28 year old.
Who is an Obama fan I was waiting on line to get in.
He's a poly sci major cities working at a group home working to help.
Children.
Were disabled -- obviously doing wonderful work but He said this is not what I was planning to do when I came out of college but I can't really find a job in my field until -- Can get a question of the president he's he's gonna ask you about jobs and -- more jobs are not being.
-- created this is an Obama fan and Obama voters seem to be leading to shore up voting form again.
But said he's just deeply concerned about jobs and the economy that's something this president is obviously trying to fix and it's an uphill battle for us.
Right now it is very important big brain he's in New York Times on Sunday Binyamin Applebaum wrote about fork in the road for the administration right now.
One for leads to trying to find a compromise on jobs with Republicans in the -- Cutting some kind of -- -- the president can demonstrate that He can get things done in Washington sort of the Clinton play.
And then the other path that says look.
Nothing that we -- gonna fix the economy in enough time to be politically useful to the president between now and then let's stick with the message let's -- -- -- much about passing stuff as we do about pushing back against Republican talking points and showing that house Republicans.
Are intransigent and not willing to work with the president to get these big and important things done.
Do you get a sense about if there's a lead here which way this this administration might go when the president get back from his -- yeah.
Sure I mean I think it's almost like two tracks I think in the lean on the rhetoric.
Is to get tough with the Republicans we saw that last Thursday in Michigan.
President went out there had a job message but said some pretty tough stuff about.
Basically there -- some.
On the other side in his estimation.
Who wanna put party first -- would rather see America lose and that raise a lot Republican eyebrows back in Washington is -- Whether He was suggesting they're unpatriotic people.
-- it's better I think the rhetoric out here is gonna be a little bit tougher than you've seen before but he's got to walk that fine line Minnesota nice.
Here in Minnesota and not be.
Ripping the bark off not and I don't think He wants to be.
Going into hand to hand combat with some elect Rick Perry yet.
Who just got into the race because that doesn't really benefit this president in terms of the legislation.
I think there's still leaning towards these smaller initiatives and try to pick off some things where they can work with the Republicans I think.
They're partly throwing that out there as as sort of a trial balloon if you will to the left in that New York Times piece that look -- you're gonna get tough here because there's a lot of left to think the president has just not been.
Tough and off with the Republicans and with the Tea Party.
But the bottom line is given divided government where this president is right now.
If He were to launch some huge jobs initiative with a big price tag that -- He can't pay for and that He a Republican House would -- vote for it seems sort of foolish to go down that -- -- just come up with an election issue but not something that can actually passed obviously can still do that.
But I've talked to some senior people in the administration.
-- think that He did you know they're more realistic I guess is the way to put it.
Backed up coming up with some fancy new stimulus some fancy new -- that they don't have the money to pay for is probably a waste of time right now this.
All right Ed Henry who loves America right in the middle of it and we appreciate you being -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- But -- I used to determine the power play this morning however aren't quite what the president's doing his bracket.
And reckoning is -- you're opponent is I'm getting some positive media attention are you going to and you step on the line you get involved -- it and that I noticed that the Republicans just had a big week in Iowa.
President's headed to Iowa he's in Michelle Obama about his onstage she just won the straw poll does this look like -- it continue its campaign moral one.
-- absolutely -- Rick Perry is in Iowa.
And so that the president wants to get his message out there -- part of the problem is it's an inherently political message and -- we -- didn't -- when the president is outside of Washington there's always politics it'll be involved with this -- this is something.
Better safe essentially -- campaign bus tour is being paid for by the taxpayers -- Republican National Committee.
So love strident on this they're calling it the day tour the dead end.
Bus -- -- -- called the magical mystery tour.
And and I I get all that but look.
Maybe it would be nice if the Obama campaign I mean they got money maybe you'd be nice -- -- -- to check back to the treasury to defray some of the cost but in terms of this like is it a campaign trip I don't understand why we hold out this -- I don't understand why we maintain this fall slot.
All presidents.
-- airforce one is your number one campaign -- when you're running for president is an incumbent you wanna be photographed walking off Air Force One in every town -- -- -- so this is like the worst luck to him and he's -- out these guys being blacked out Secret Service mega bus and He wants to project the power of the presidency but don't do it right.
Well due to some extent the seems to be a bit more blatant certainly when the Bush Administration.
