And the road to quite -- took a lot of twists and turns this weekend the GOP field -- a candidate that lost another.
All is Michelle Bachman -- to victory in the Ames straw poll but just barely she beat out Texas congressman Ron Paul.
I just 200 votes GOP front runner Mitt Romney He placed seventh in the Iowa poll.
Now is not campaigned much in the nation's first caucus state and He did not officially participate in the straw poll.
How He is looking to New Hampshire though where earlier today He gave the anointed one well quite the verbal beating.
And you know the president was on The Today Show shortly after getting elected.
And He said if I can't turn this economy around -- three years it's a one term proposition for -- I agree and I'm here to collect.
The president this week is in three states on a bus tour.
Campaigning.
That is going to be going out of vacation a Martha's Vineyard for ten days.
A lot of Democrats in Martha's Vineyard I don't know why but.
I wish the president -- That we were in Washington calling back congress and and dealing with the challenges we have.
And joining me with analysis of all of the developments over the past two days the author of the New York Times best seller courage and consequence the architect the one and only Karl Rove sir how -- Fine how much -- -- all balls that aren't a lot happening here.
Popular -- -- strong -- -- -- -- fairness He didn't participate in an nor did Newt Gingrich and a few of the other candidates.
Rick Perry gets -- Pawlenty gets out lot of changes lot of moving parts what do you think yeah.
Well lot of good things happened I mean it was a big boost for Michelle Bachmann to win the straw poll.
Let's not read too much into it though it is really I mean -- 171000.
People.
Who took it turned out that Iowa has 3007000.
People -- there -- a lot of people who didn't show up a -- At the straw poll but nonetheless it's a good boost for her momentum probably -- -- a jump up and fund raising certainly gives your bigger.
My part on the national -- -- when did five Sunday talk programs as a result.
Perry has gotten and I think in a very and Troy fashion He leaked it He dominated the news.
Leading into the straw poll the day before.
He made it clear He was gonna get -- who dominated the pre coverage He announced on the same day.
They gave him apart and every story you know Michelle -- lead but the second paragraph and most -- was Rick -- -- and and then Mitt Romney had a good performance in the debate and maintain his lead as the front runner so.
We've got a got a good field I don't think it's the end though of the field I think we're likely to see.
Several other candidates think seriously about getting and and and frankly they have time to do so November 22 is the first deadline to file papers to get on a ballot that's that's the last -- -- that's really the last -- somebody could get in without starting to lose a place and somebody early.
Primaries and caucuses and I suspect -- likely to see in early September -- late August some people that little -- with these -- other people you suspect they're gonna -- -- Well I I think edited and and I think Palin.
He didn't think that He had and well I think she's got to look seriously at an I don't know -- any of these are gonna actually get him.
But I think that this the nature of the field and the fact that we've now got three candidates when we could have had 45 or six major candidates.
This can lead people say well I can be and that in that contest Palin has got -- Pretty active schedule in early September I think Chris Christie and Paul Ryan are gonna look at it again and I wouldn't be surprised -- There's if if if all three of them gave serious consideration why and what it -- you're not they do end up at the end.
I don't know I've I've talked to governor Chris Christie a lot He says no way I don't but I was more.
I'm convinced Governor Palin -- -- -- nanometer Friday night at the Iowa state fair that she might get in now.
Paul Ryan holding has given any indication what makes you think those two -- -- meaning Ryan and not -- Well -- Well two things one is there was an event in New York that I can -- and pulled together some big money raisers.
And met with Christie and -- you need to think seriously about this.
And in and it's not just a meeting what happened afterwards is from what I picked up around the country.
I talked a number of people who had picked up the phone and called Christie did tell -- thought that He ought to run and these are Republican activist Republican donors movers and shakers.
Activists around the country in the same month Paul Ryan and I and -- -- -- started to pick up some some sort of vibrations that.
That these -- these kind of conversations are causing.
-- and Christie and -- to tell the people were calling them.
Well you know what -- which He had -- I think I will take a look at how they look -- whether or not that happens or not I don't I don't know but I'm just picking that up that.
The people have some sense some belief that.
That these two guys are gonna take a look at.
All right first all the Gallup poll now has the president at 39%.
Approval rating 54% disapproval rating that's a fifteen points -- that's a fifteen point gap.
And -- president.
Since Harry Truman has been reelected on approval ratings this slow this late into their first term.
The lowest president George W Bush's numbers came in his first term or 46%.
So what does this -- how big an opportunity now is this is -- gotten bigger.
Well I I think the president has some structural problems and they're not gonna get better than than they have to do with the bad economy high joblessness sluggish growth.
And the fact that He has no real concept of had to deal with it and no plan.
I thought it was interesting today on his on his taxpayer funded that campaign stop.
He announced that He would make a plan available in September -- you think the president would have a plan available now he's only had.
How long do you get a plan together after the failure of the stimulus bill.
But we'll see what happens with his proposal but I think the presence -- -- deep do do is they say he's just.
All right that'll be the quote of the day.
-- let me go to that we'll handicap the candidates here Mitt Romney still -- -- Rick Perry has some very good numbers coming out of the box Michelle Bachmann has been doing very very -- You mention three other people that may get in -- Christie and Governor Palin.
The other handicap how this thing's gonna evolve way you know look at -- that -- rove architect crystal ball who's gonna emerged as the front runners here.
Well look of Romney is is the nominal front runners will not by the margin that we traditionally seen from -- lead.
I think Bachmann and period we're gonna first have to have a sort of a primary of activity.
Two.
Figure out who is the principle not Romney candidate I think at the end of the day contests like this tend to become -- -- -- nature.
Romney's got enough strength and enough money and enough activity that he's going to be the leader then the question is which one of them is gonna come up.
The first -- -- this was Sunday night in Waterloo Iowa Michelle -- hometown and Rick Perry won this particular -- He showed up early He shook every hand.
He.
Pose for pictures who everybody spent hours that this black -- canny Republican Lincoln day dinner Michelle Bachmann said in the bus outside.
And came in just before she spoke and then afterwards stood -- the table signing teachers I think there will be the last time.
But these two people will campaign exactly president Michelle Bachmann will campaign exactly that way I suspect she'll take -- lesson from Perry's.
Aggressive retail campaigning and not let that happen -- -- again art -- broker the sale will be following it closely appreciate being with us.
You -- thanks -- and coming.
