I'm a conservative businessman.
I spent most of my life outside politics.
Dealing with real problems in the real economy.
Career politicians got us into this mess and they simply don't know how to get us out.
That was former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney heading down to San Antonio Texas to talk a little smack.
-- decade long governor Rick Perry and this is power play thanks for being with us thanks to Tim -- Senior political columnist for the Washington examiner.
For sticking around we're having a good time here today.
And we're going to make the time better we're going to make it even better.
Because we have with us as promised Leslie Marshall she's in our -- LA studios.
Hanging out being glamorous out on the West Coast -- how we doing today.
It can't get wearing guys -- almost good afternoon where you are.
Almost good -- the wolf we're gonna adopt an LA state of mind for today right -- -- ever -- that we're -- word exactly we're going to be very we're gonna be a lot more low key.
I was gonna say -- and He -- the Botox and breast implants later.
God -- I just -- just just make sure nobody sees the package.
Leslie what we -- what we're talking about today what we just heard Mitt Romney talking about was.
How the Republican race has changed very dramatically that we've gone from a royal field with Mitt Romney sort of the stealth candidate sliding along now pretty obviously he's decided that He needs to confront new front runner Rick Perry.
Head -- He goes to Texas yesterday.
And -- career politicians against Perry who's been in office for a decade in in public service for 27 years.
Now he's really he's gonna go to Jim demands.
Big big big dinner whatever it is that they have in South Carolina on Labor Day which He had said He wouldn't do before they're talking about they're gonna compete in Iowa.
From the -- from the -- Republican side of things from your side of the street.
How does this shaping up for you -- this this must be kind of a satisfying.
Turn of events.
Well it's satisfying to see the fight on the right.
But quite frankly it's not satisfying I'll I'll say because I think areas -- tougher candidate to beat -- Romney for the president to be be very honest at least when it comes to the very -- and religious right faction of the Republican party of the GOP.
But but it's actually it is a nice to sit back and watch although I think is necessary whether candidate is left or right.
You need to confront your opponent you need to be strong and you need to be specific.
-- how do you differ.
From them and I I think although it's not gonna be very effective.
I think it's a step in the right direction for -- by saying look.
On the Washington outsider but I'm not a career politician I did my one stay in one -- -- Massachusetts's governor.
But you have a career politician and Rick Perry.
Although Rick -- supporters and many on the right that are looking for.
Christian although I've been attacked by some saying mormons are Christians well sorry but the Christian right don't view anybody but the nondenominational.
Born again Christian as a Christian but that's just.
Think they're taking yeah.
I think Leslie I think they're taking can't let it doesn't have I think -- definitely -- -- now that's that's.
But I Tim you.
Do you agree with the assertion that.
That that -- tougher to beat for Obama do you think that He that He is is harder one to knock down.
Probably I think to do with the Romney hope is that -- might -- -- And security threat and He vaguely threatened physical violence on you know one federal bureaucrat in case to engage in quantitative easing just ugly and keep a good idea of the kind of guys say that could blow off so that's what Romney's hoping for.
And I could happen and help -- Obama and they explicitly said.
We heard we talked about this yesterday that they hope that Michelle -- -- quote -- his eyes out with it was a pretty which is even worse than treating somebody ugly.
But you but you agree that He that He be tougher I.
I agree but -- but on Monday it yet but I don't know if the Democrats sort of see Perry as I feel like a lot of them think -- so far right that all -- be easy to dispatch just not something.
I agree with the that is something I'm hearing from a lot of Democrats.
So maybe that's just talk but I do I do get the feeling that a lot of them think all we want the more conservative guys you Tony because he's easy to -- Well and you know Leslie one thing that would be easy to thrash about.
If the if He were to get the nomination is he's very wealthy Eagles tonight I'll.
Probably out in your neighborhood he's doubling the size.
Of his deluxe pad out on the West Coast.
He has all of these things He sort of fits the Thomas -- -- for the Republicans if if I'm the president and I'm looking at Mitt Romney saying if I'm gonna have an us vs them -- rich -- middle class election.
It would not rather run against the rich guy.
Clinton well sorry but I I've always been told that rich you get the more Republican again I guess I'm sure there.
Oddly enough in is there anybody in payroll at fox listening but I mean that you listen.
And the bottom line here is a Ronnie has things working for him.
For those that don't favor Perry I mean this is the key voter to get here by the independence of most independents are more moderate Republicans.
Or more left leaning Democrats.
For more conservative Democrats -- you have a mixed.
The independents I believe are going to be more drawn to Romney certainly than -- But that the Christian right cannot be underestimated him we we can't forget that looking at history.
When we look at our Karl Rove motivated them in the reelection campaign for George W.
Bush that was tight especially in the state.
All of Ohio it was very effective.
We cannot ignore quite frankly the power of the -- publications the Tea Party -- really the GOP masquerading as this movement.
And and quite frankly even though they're not all on the same page so.
You know I I I is that you know I is -- Democrats say look.
You know for Romney I have a problem with anybody any -- about your to big political background is going.
I was pro choice -- woken up pro life.
I had a mandate in the state when I was governor of Massachusetts but I'm against it on the federal level.
It's hypocrisy I I think and then for the Republicans the fact that he's Mormon people don't like to discuss it.
There's a problem just does not just -- the Catholics are a lot and now.
Problem Barack -- and although He was successful it was a problem it was a tough problem profanity.
-- Leslie Leslie you're gonna be sticking around you're going to be here on the dot com stream after we're gone so we we leave a foxnews.com and your good hands and we'll talk you again -- on the power play Idaho.
Thanks guys I -- it.
Okay that's it today folks but we do want to share one last chat because good to handle is so good that I could not say -- Chicken farm life.
That's awesome and I had enough to put right and half and -- -- until the parties are our urban -- -- but she says this.
I think the best way to solve the housing problem is to get folks back to work.
Think out of the box and start being self reliant so -- farm wife you know.
Your beat from your feathers and we appreciate you chatting and today.
