A new effort under way to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation the state wants to help people improve their own lives.

And still cut the cost of health care delivery.

This new program could serve as a blueprint for other states let's get an explanation from Iowa governor Terry Branstad who joins us live from the -- and obesity it's a real problem in your state right now is that governor you that's one of the things you're hoping to attack.

Yes John it's a problem all across the country.

And we think the only way -- we can really.

Deal with the health care.

Cost -- an epidemic in America is to get people would take ownership of their own health.

Only 20% is really genetically cause a lot of it is basically environment and lifestyle choices and we wanna.

We want Iowa to lead the country within five years we want to be -- healthiest state in the nation.

One of the reasons this story caught our eyes because there has been such an argument in Washington over the past couple of years over health care.

How do you pay for it how do you deliver -- how do you make it as efficient as possible.

This is a program that you think has some of those answers and interestingly at least the pilot program is not being paid for by tax dollars can you explain that.

Right it's a and some private initiative.

Publicly indoors so we have well mark blue cross blue shield is the largest cell provider in our state.

We have high V which is the largest supermarket chain.

And we have the Iowa sports foundation the leaders of those organizations have come together also with the business community and a lot of leaders from all over the state in myself and the director department of public health.

And our lieutenant governor have endorsed and supported we want -- every community in Iowa to compete to be a -- -- community.

And to look at ways that they can.

Improve the exercise and nutrition and in those things it can reduce.

There -- risk factors and help people live it's longer and healthier lives it's already showing some amazing results tell us some of the things that people are doing and the results.

Well we're starting out with do a walk on the seventh of October.

We hope to have over 250000.

People about 1112.

Of the population of Iowa participating in this kick -- And then.

How well mark -- put together.

Ten million dollars to provide funding for communities and focus on being -- communities already Albert lea Minnesota which is just north.

Has been a -- -- community has done some phenomenal things to reduce health care costs.

And have people -- a -- live longer healthier lives we want every community and I want every Iowa and to get involved in that.

You know there are some some real numbers involved here life expectancy up almost three years in one of the pilot program city's health care cause -- down 49%.

Absenteeism.

Down 21%.
