The impact segment tonight the AARP remains the most powerful lobbying group on behalf of the senior citizens in the US -- an astounding forty million Americans belong to the AARP but for years -- charges.
That the organization has evolved into a left wing concern a new TV ad speaks to that.
My grocery bill listen wasteful spending and do my heart -- Some some political -- even from our retirement isn't as simple budget line item I -- -- I've -- didn't demand anything.
And I earned my Social Security.
Now instead of cutting waste and loopholes in Washington wants to cut our benefits -- Wasn't the agreement.
Join the members of AARP.
And tell Washington to stop cuts to -- Medicare and Social Security benefits.
Now earlier this week I talk with AARP president Lee hand.
So -- kind of wrap on the AARP.
Is that it's just too left way you've heard that I'm sure you have.
Well we hear that but you know our membership.
Is as diverse as the country and I and I -- I'm a member but you know I have to say I'm growing increasingly suspect.
Of your editorial position and it's not because I'm an ideologue that I was going over so my back editions of the AARP magazine.
Let me just -- -- some of the names -- had on the cover and maybe get used to it yet Michelle Obama covered it makes sense -- Robert Redford.
-- Harrison Ford.
Danny Glover.
Richard -- Bill Cosby Ron Howard.
Michael Douglas Morgan Freeman -- and -- and Bruce Springsteen Kevin Spacey Brian Williams Martin Sheen Steven Spielberg.
Every one of them is -- left Winger every one of them the only conservative you've had -- -- -- in recent years been President Bush.
-- subtle about.
Well the covers on magazines sell.
And that's that's what the pick up rate is on the magazine OK but what I'm saying view -- -- -- -- -- fifteen names and overall liberal people.
Pass and you have one conservative fifty to one and I can't sit here and say.
That there isn't a conservative.
But you could put on the covenant itself I know there -- -- -- -- -- certainly that was good then why haven't they been there.
I don't know you're the editor -- I'm not the editor you the president of AARP you have been the president they -- volunteer.
Yeah and do you volunteer opinion that it's becoming too left wing we.
Volunteer opinions old time did you tell them that this might be not fair and balanced this magazine that the comes and no I haven't looked at the magazine that way.
Okay He ran a smart we ran a spot about the people saying that you know we don't want our -- entitlements.
Restless and I understand that position I mean elderly senior citizens pay into Medicare they pay into social security and I don't want to -- to opt.
But there isn't any bill in the world that's actually saying.
Senior citizens are -- loose their entitlements but yet you have this commercial that implies they might.
Well indeed they might.
Based on why -- there is no.
Bill here right this point and not even anybody suggesting.
No I would disagree with you there -- a little bit -- their numbers of people suggest who it.
Numbers of people in the congress doesn't just give me one name who suggesting they wanna take or modify.
Social Security or Medicare for -- seniors there has has been a lot of conversation around that -- -- it is not because what you want mr.
Hammond just one well I know that the the minority lead minority whip.
In the house who is a Democrat.
As indicated that there is still broad discussion about making an even even deeper cuts.
Okay I am I have to -- -- -- record of sinners no politician that I know of that has threatened to introduce legislation that would cut any entitlement.
At all French presidency news there are lots of things in play and where they're they're.
I do -- for a living I've never seen if they were in play with the that reduction committee.
There and play with the all the -- forty it's all -- -- for the younger Americans -- -- gonna run out of money.
All right let's just move on -- one more thing.
I want DA RP to lobby for senior citizens I want that senior citizens need a powerful lobby to you're absolutely lol okay.
You're not really doing it for all -- uses -- in my opinion respectfully respectfully.
I read a magazine which is the only outlet I have to know what you guys are doing it's left wing magazine that's what it is.
That's what it's become an organization has become that.
I'd like to see you get back into the center and really look at these things to your credit and AARP's credit you did object to cap and trade you do do that.
You're not doctrinaire all the way down the line.
But it's one thing after another here and I think that basically did senior citizens need an independent ports and even less work.
Well -- I would hope that you would look at things a little differently if you knew the entire breadth of the organization.
Because indeed we do.
Work for our members these some people who tell us what we need to do.
Our Suzanne thanks -- -- -- we appreciate it nice to see you thank you bill.
