-- -- -- -- -- -- Well it began as a marketing tool to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research but some people including cancer survivors now think -- think pink campaign.
Is more about making a profit and raising awareness.
-- now Fox News medical eighteen contributor doctors and our coomer.
And mount Sinai reconstructive surgeon doctor chess team good morning to both -- warning so it's interesting because when people see the pink ribbon now they automatically I think no.
That means breast cancer but.
Doctor Tina -- -- saturated in our communities now so that people CNET and then they think I don't need to give because other people you know.
I don't think so I think it's not just about raising money it's about raising awareness and -- -- patients all the time who don't get the care they -- This operation last week you had had a mammogram in twelve years and she saw a pink cat and decided to go get a mammogram and diagnosed with cancer so now.
I don't think there's too much -- and site.
Think some of the complaints and -- have come from people who say well these corporations are using the color pink.
And they're making money off of this campaign I think the latest one was that they're selling guns in part of the profits we're going to breast cancer research.
Is that was -- is -- over done taking it too far.
I think the concern is that some companies and individuals are over marketing this for their own personal gain.
So some companies for example will donate 25 cents for a -- dollar purchase what they'll donate one dollar for 200 dollar purchase.
It's a maximum maybe 75000 -- 100000 but yet they're really gaining -- this marketing tool.
And some companies you know we assume that when we -- a pink ribbon on a yogurt -- for example.
That that's being mark that that money's going for research of course it -- -- for research but that's not always the case.
I think that's -- people are getting upset because it is being.
-- the concern is that it may be being over marketed for personal gain as opposed to money being put into research.
Which is really where the money should be going other -- -- point is very valid that obviously this does help gain awareness I think -- -- of great job of -- Gaining awareness about breast cancer in women going from -- for mammograms.
But we do need to be concerned.
About the over marketing of the overuse of as a doctor to.
And it's my understanding that research dollars have gone down.
Over the last five years and -- even though we seem to be seeing much more paint everywhere right well actually total research dollars are down but I think it's a testament to the success of the can campaign that recent jobs for breast cancer are actually up.
And dramatically.
And yet we still no closer to to a -- is a cancer survivor yourself after -- I mean this must bring charity you know.
Right and I think that's what some survivors especially concerned about when they see so much Pincus is is money going into valid research.
He should be be looking -- other caught other reasons the fact is involved in breast cancer.
To help prevent it because -- that we -- no longer what no closer to -- necessarily.
And we were twenty years ago so should we be looking at other factors.
And I think the concern is that also too that if we used to much think of we overuse of -- campaign that will blunt the emotional response and intellectual response to what it's meant to do.
And therefore nations will not -- -- mammograms are they kind of get sick of looking at the same thing over and over again and not necessarily donate anymore.
You know what I find is inspiring to -- to make me remind to go get mammograms at the doctor's office actually calls me -- six months before.
I mean it's interesting how it you know they -- that makes me think about it to let that.
I -- you Wear the pink tied it Andy you know it's -- -- maybe somebody will see that today is that Andy go and get their mammograms looked very interesting discussion thank you doctor coming back to you for coming in so well.
Still ahead old glory.
