Guys hey listen we're gonna get some politics right now standing a ballet for me this morning -- picketed -- They carry carries a staff writer with The Washington Times and and Tony Tony Welch is here he's former secretary Press Secretary for Democratic National Committee.
Good morning to both of you how -- you.
They are now so how is it there and He -- -- in DC yeah.
A little rainy but I hang in there saying it's -- -- hey let's let's talk about this first article went talk about -- -- New York Times.
Black support for Obama is steady and strong as you may know carry -- our review -- some people who are surprised by this.
What do you -- -- this.
Well you know -- I'm not necessarily in you know shocked -- that.
Black support for Obama is you know -- gong to be there I mean look every democratic candidate that has run for president or.
Or whatnot has as always gotten -- black support.
But the thing that that's that's -- big question here is where is the energy.
You know or they're going to be those people who have never voted before or rather -- let's -- back in -- 06 or -- -- are those people going to stay home are they going to be campaigning for Obama the way they campaign for him in.
And say oh wait remembered black unemployment rate is way higher than say via its -- national landed in the right now you're right but there -- people in this article were featured in this article -- and they're saying you know what.
They are not they still they don't blame it on the president.
Either it's still are -- -- remember in that same article you had that one guy there who -- -- first segmented that you know what I'd like to see perhaps someone else.
Go in there and see how how how actually that person does as opposed to Obama you have people -- are still sort of pausing right now wondering.
How President Obama is doing just because the unemployment rate is sort of like are actually really lagging.
Hey Tony you heard Kerry say that hey listen bottom line of your black you're gonna vote for the democratic ticket.
-- -- -- He.
Big assumption there -- -- -- right on target with that.
Well when when the support comes -- at 90% higher over several presidents -- there's something out of the appeal so that.
It only gets I think consulting for African Americans when people might assert that they are voting their interest -- it doesn't have to mean big African Americans in support of the democratic.
Candidate but it has a lot to do with policy I believe and I guess it's but it is it is it is incredibly -- I think there's something else that might be -- play here.
While there's concern.
I thinkers right to point out that the enthusiasm might not be there but here's what I think that might be a play every.
Insult that Obama has suffered the most recently to be Rick Perry questioning again.
On the birth for issue.
-- -- and He doesn't suffer -- alone other people have to deal that indignity woody and I that.
Well itself so when the attacks against President Obama are baseless and groundless and and and and along those lines.
Do remember it isn't -- supporting Obama is what what is the air.
What's the what's the opposition what's the alternative.
What should what should African Americans be considering what would you be considering the party that that it's invested so much of its time the question whether or not the president was legitimate.
That's kind of that's kind of an -- and so.
It it did it in and I think that's the only reason but I think it makes it more difficult for Republicans to actually make inroads and among African Americans remember.
And the president probably running against someone and that someone has the opportunity to present him or -- -- As a candidate who's excited for African American.
Okay into your point that it's not about this early races about the cause and because if that's the case it gets Herman Cain would have He really really large support group in the black community correct.
I think that's -- troops facing you know also in this article guys the president is saying you know he's he's he's out LA.
Monday and He He talked with the likes of will Smith and magic Johnson and say listen guys -- this the election.
Will net -- quote not be as sexy as the first -- suggesting that.
You can't be apathetic you gotta get the very same people who went out to vote for him first go around.
Don't assume that this thing is in the bag you've got to get them energized so -- I'm gonna go to you now.
Is that -- -- that the president has to be concerned with is apathy this -- this time around.
Absolutely and in fact just even.
Go to the point -- -- not being as glitzy.
That is very true of Barack Obama is not the bright shiny object that He once was.
But -- the fact that he's hanging out with a whole Hollywood crowd.
And and then and then a Wall Street -- and Wall Street crowd as well by the way the could -- -- credit He likes to use as the as the whipping boy.
-- in -- they -- to sort of criticized all the time.
You have to remember that Barack Obama is is having is -- -- -- known problems with us support that He had got back you know way.
Plus by the way.
I'd like to think figure out here why is it that He is not campaigning more -- at the at the grassroots level as opposed to what He was doing back in no way.
I think -- little problems that bet that what you did that that He was actually having perhaps with the with a number of the demographics.
Who may be concerned about him at this point is that he's hanging out with too many of the high rollers.
-- here Tony do you see it that way.
Well no I I I don't I mean it makes sense when your fundraising you probably go there who have the money is big and where the money -- I think the Obama campaign can point out that.
Better than 90% of its donations are small donations and I I think that He knows that his faith right rises and falls upon how well they do with the grassroots but there is concern about there's a real concern about the enthusiasm and I think you'll see him press that issue specifically and and and put himself in front.
Of college students and younger.
And younger voters especially.
Like African Americans that the China's off that it is it isn't going to be.
-- he's not as knew who.
As He was in 2008 to Sony people so that's gone so -- have to be he'll actually have to campaign.
On -- He just won't be able overall -- rely upon that is not.
Yeah I can't just be about the now we'll see you listen guys Tony Welch former Press Secretary Democratic National Committee Kerry pick -- staff writer Washington times.
I am happy to see -- the view but I am going to say so long have a great day they.
