Talk a little bit more about that New York City terror bomb plot I'm joined by Bob Strang a former co chair of the post 9/11 anti terrorism task force.
He's also CEO of the investigative management group this is the kind of thing that keeps -- -- awake at -- one guy working in his apartment.
Building bombs and man with a -- idea of causing trouble.
That's right this is the -- got it falls between the cracks it's not.
Part of an organization it's not part of a big terrorist group the conspiracy is not something you can put your arms around.
This is what we fear most this is what.
The head -- the FBI Bob Mueller has been saying is the biggest problem in the country.
He's one off lone -- that come out of nowhere Janet -- volatile talks about all the time and here's a perfect example we've got a lot of reporting about.
And why are all a Lockheed those late and -- lamented leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula he was not only an American but he was a master at using the Internet.
To describe you known to have been well this online magazine inspire that was supposed to -- right fired Jihad that's apparently where this guy is alleged.
-- -- learned all this stuff.
That's right and what they do is they actually go on the Internet they look for things like inspire and where you know we know that this comes directly from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
And we know for a fact that he got -- see the ingredients for this bomb right from that well from an article entitled.
How to make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom and apparently that's exactly what he was doing he did.
So this is the -- I think more and more that we're seeing I think one of the things it's unusual -- John.
Is that you saw the -- to state and local police.
Make the case it's unusual to see this is the fourteenth case in New York City that's been stopped since 9/11 pretty good record right.
There's a thousand police officers from the new York city police department assigned here.
But we're starting to see this trend across the country.
More more police departments are locally.
Getting involved with informants making payments and making their own terrorism cases it reminds me a little bit of like 25 years ago when drug cases started to become.
More prevalent and local federal had different types of criteria that they used and they did different cases so.
One of the things as we change and we go from these big 9/11 top type bombs to these more.
Localize lone wolves one of the things that we're seeing is our local governments responding in an appropriate way.
They're actually be taking state local laws using them and making things like this happen.
But will local juries respond in an appropriate way you know there there is apparently some kind of an informant involved in this case.
Seems like every time that happens there the guy gets a lawyer who says all.
My client is just kind of you know a low level wannabe and he never would have done any of this stuff if it hadn't been for the government setting him up.
But I would say it takes one and no one.
Because he knows how do you get these cases how do you build and the only way to do it.
Is with an informant you unless you have a wiretap and less you have surveillance and where you can see things the only way is an informant and the best cases are made that way.
We'll talk about informants we are about to poll all of our military forces out of Iraq.
Does that potentially lead to less intelligence in that part of the world about this kind of thing.
Well that is a fear in our circles in terms of security because as we take our troops out of the Middle East in general.
They've been doing such a good job they've been kicking down doors eliminating a potential terrorists as we seen some on the television.
But clearly this has been -- tremendous resource for us in terms of keeping us safe.
So is we kind of remove our troops remove -- until the military intelligence.
There's going to be a void in the security system so not only do we have to worry about these long Waltz.
We also have to worry about these major groups coming back and attacking us as our military and government -- these areas that are.
Right with this foundation of these terrorist groups some.
Ominous thoughts there as we ended Bob Strang with the investigative management group thank you thanks John.
