Joining us now is -- television icon whose career spans more than fifty years his memoir how I got this way.
Looks back on his years in show business Regis Philbin thanks for being here so nice to talk to you.
Thank you Rick thanks very much you know I really enjoy this book and you know why cause it's you I could hear your voice in my head while I was reading it.
In that's exactly the way I wrote it just to how I would say it.
So I am glad you have picked up on them than -- -- it.
I also like the way to the chapter ends with a little word of wisdom here is what happened and here's what Regis learned from it.
Exactly and I think we all could learned from the some of those chapters and some of the thoughts you have as you as you leave someone.
What it meant deal and then how you could express that to people out there and let them take advantage of -- diligence saying goodbye to someone.
And how much they meant to you tell them that.
When you have the chance don't wait you'll regret at the -- -- life.
Is a lot of self help stuff in here and I was surprised by I mean there's all that behind the scenes showbiz stop which I just absolutely loved but I was interested to read one of these little lessons what you took away after a step back.
The true test is how you face the next day.
For folks out there who were listening to this Regis who have to deal with their own setbacks what kind of advice would you -- Well I had those setbacks and I know how they hurt.
And I remember the very first time I talked -- heard about -- again.
And laws.
Was at Notre Dame believe it -- not from the football coach named frank Leahy.
Who had a tremendous speaking voice he was very firm and very intense.
And -- the first.
-- of the of a pre -- party you know one of -- of pep rallies.
Leahy came about talk to a cities especially -- of the talked of the freshman.
And I was a kid from New York City you that the booklets of the Hudson River and Iran and Indiana Notre Dame.
And as the Notre Dame team and this this coach and he's telling us you freshman remember this debate fetal losses in your life you may fail at something.
-- you please use that constraint thing you itself.
Because you've got to come back.
You're gonna get out of the chance and you've got to.
Reinforced yourself for that chance they'll be in the data by a loss to let that destroy a life that can happen anyway he was very forceful.
I'd never forgot it and I use it a couple of times in the book is as you probably -- I did I did a won't ask you about early on in your career you had an uncle who helped you get a job as a page and NBC.
When -- are walking through the halls at 30 Rock that that famous.
Story building.
As a page you know down on the lower the lower step in the latter how did you envision your career what you dreamed about it.
We had no I didn't envision what happened to be I I was so overwhelmed about becoming a page I was.
You know I grew up with a lack of confidence rather shy didn't think I had any talent and I and I frankly.
The don't think I have much talent now except maybe to tell a story on TV but the fact is that.
Here I was.
Wearing this page uniform and directing people around them but for his show is the Tonight Show.
Steve -- was doing it from a the 44 street theater.
And there I have the second balcony watching them rehearse -- think -- by god look at that talent down there.
So I never really envisioned it to -- because I thought but they would delay I could never accomplished.
And so it took a long time for me to overcome -- -- so I really didn't anticipate a brilliant future in television.
Not at all well that's exactly what happened and as you also write in the book Regis if you're grateful to someone who has brought you joy.
You should tell them so let me tell you sir thank you for all the joy and we look forward to a lot more from you.
Well Rick I appreciate that and I'm glad that you know a lot of the youngest people in our business have a chance to read the book and hopefully benefit from Britain.
And make a big success -- the self that I I include you -- that and thank you very much how I got this way is the book Regis Philbin thanks so much great to talk to you sir.
Thank you --
