And the question of character on the Republican campaign trail today that's what we're talking about.
-- McCain pushing ahead despite new claims.
He had a thirteen year affair -- consensual affair.
This comes at the same time the political analysts are pointing out Newt Gingrich had at least two extramarital affairs and his past and he's the front runner at this moment.
Does this disqualify.
These guys -- presidential candidates.
In a recent Quinnipiac University poll both men register in the single digits.
When voters are asked which Republican contender had -- strong.
Mitt Romney is far out in front with 32% the next in line is Michelle Bachmann with 11% vacancy Gingrich is at nine.
And -- is at seven.
Tony Perkins is president of the family research council Tony you know we touched on this a bit the last -- you were here.
You got Gingrich she's got you know two affairs that he admitted to.
He left his first wife when she was struggling with uterine cancel cancer.
And he had left his second wife after -- been diagnosed with MS and had affairs with both on both of them.
That those are the facts now I got Herman Cain who denies he had this affair but as a woman at least claiming a thirteen year affair with him.
As you know you're somebody who has long stood for conservative values for family values are these deal breakers for you with either of these candidates.
-- it's interesting to see how people -- responding to enter Herman Cain I think his numbers have been dropping but I think what really sealed it with people was the way his attorney.
Responded to this -- latest allegations saying that this is private.
Consensual behavior in should not be considered by people.
Adding that doesn't work.
What we're saying is that there's not this dichotomy -- view of -- someone's personal life and here's someone's professional life and we really shouldn't consider the personal if only the professional.
Voters don't look at it that way I think they look at both that's why I think it's interesting when -- in that poll you do showed.
Mitt Romney is far out front when you look at his character because it's been stable he married good family.
No moral you know what qualms about the way he's been conducting himself.
But his professional life there's some inconsistency there inconsistencies there when you look at his.
Policy but look at Rick Santorum he's at the bottom of that -- I know he's the and I know he's a devout Catholic who hasn't had anything you know close to you know these allegations about his marriage and his family life.
He's the only one that's yet they have his day in the spotlight as all the other candidates have and and kind of wilted under that bright light.
I think Newt Gingrich is not by no means out of the woods yet when people Begin to analyze his background now -- haven't said that.
-- having said that let me just say -- -- especially among evangelicals and social conservatives they understand.
And embrace the story of redemption and forgiveness.
But there's a difference between.
Accepting someone's apology saying I was wrong and then placing an and the trust as the president is the commander in chief.
Those two things don't necessarily go hand in hand.
I think the next two weeks are going to be very telling for Newt Gingrich and whether or not he can be the alternative to Mitt Romney.
He has you know said that he he send and he's human and and ask for forgiveness.
Do you think that makes a difference do you think that if Herman -- and I'm not -- -- her McCain had this affair with this woman.
But if he did we do think he'd be better served to come out and say.
I messed up not a part of it and you think that that would actually help them with social conservatives.
-- well I mean I think it at this point as you were talking about an earlier segment there's so many allegations have been made it might be.
The ability of -- Herman -- to pull this out.
But I think what really turned a lot of conservatives off was the way his attorney responded to this by saying hey this is a private consensual matter it is beyond scrutiny of the public.
That's not that's not gonna sell.
Voters want to know that there there are electing a politician with character not a character is a politician.
And that's unfortunately what you see with the shenanigans that people were you know -- accused of them and being involved.
Do you think Tony I -- it as as they say one of the country's you know conservative leaders do you think that you could get past.
The new Gingrich passed with respect to those -- I'll tell you do you know I've talked a lot of conservative women.
Who just have a real problem with how he -- behaved towards his wives especially sick wives.
That there's no question -- and that is a major factor but I that's not the only factor.
That Newt Gingrich just overcome with social conservatives as you as you look at his new contract with America it's pretty much devoid of social issues.
So when he talks about and what he makes a priority of it's often apps and their issues are also often absent from that and -- look he's not an outsider he was -- speaker of the House of Representatives.
What did he do when he was entrusted with that power and that authority did he do the things that he's promising today.
I again I think the next two weeks are going to be very telling for his political future is scrutiny is placed upon his record.
That just as personal conduct but his professional record as a speaker of only.
Seen that happen repeatedly -- -- become the front runner and then the scrutiny really takes place and then we see where they wind up weeks and months later Tony Perkins thank you surf.
Thanks -- and young man.
