Hi everybody I'm Jamie Colby this is fox extract and today we're talking to doctor -- bench -- car.

This is not the first time you've tried to teach us how to be -- your first book -- -- was -- New York Times best seller you have a lot of experience in this area.
And a lot of people don't know about positive psychology what makes that different than the psychology we know.
-- positive psychology the science of happiness and it's basically taking ideas from the self help movement new -- movement and testing them.
Putting them to -- -- test the science and finding what actually works is anyone ever happy enough.
Will we are all as happy as we are and the expectation to be perfectly happy.
Actually makes us less happy how does that work well imagine waking up every morning.
And saying -- -- self.
I've had it with a -- gravity I don't want them off gravity would -- -- -- of constant frustration.
Similarly if we -- -- in the morning and we say I will not have any painful emotions will not experience failure.
We will actually be frustrated and I'm happy because these emotions are as natural as joy and love.
And well being so what can we do to change.
Our happiness or improve the chances that we can reach not perfect happiness but happy enough.
And first of all we need to accept the fact that part of being human is also being sad disappointed.
Anxious or angry at times.
Once we accept these emotions paradoxically we open ourselves up.
To joy love and happiness.
And what else can we do to expand our horizons and find joy and happiness in ways we never thought would bring it to us well there's a lot of interesting research coming out recently for example showing bad regular physical exercise.
Is as powerful as our most.
And -- psychiatric medication so exercising regularly.
Also simplify now weighs in small and simple ways such -- when we come home.
Switch of the phone from 23 hours while you're spending time with your friends and family.

And I went through every single one and you talk about.
Ways in which you can think.
That will make you happier.
And you even have exercises in here to do that had a short program work.
Well there are few things -- one thing we can think -- all the things that we're grateful for the part of the cost the peaceful because we all have things.
If we can appreciate and when we appreciate the good in our lives the good appreciates.
We have more of it.
When the rates have -- -- my partner including myself my family my life as a whole I like that so it appreciates it doesn't.
When we take things for granted in our lives they unfortunately -- -- great information today.
