So in a year full of political double speak a nonpartisan fact checking web site has now crowned the lie of the year.
And that award goes to the Democrats claim that Republicans voted to end Medicare.
You may remember after Republican congressman Paul Ryan unveiled an extensive Medicare reform plan.
We saw a series of controversial ads accusing Republicans of wanting to kill Medicare.
Those ads were also echoed by statements like this from the White House and top Democrats.
At the end of the day this plan would end Medicare as we know it.
For millions of senior.
Republicans have put forth a budget.
That ends Medicare.
While giving -- -- seniors pay more to get less -- giving tax subsidies to big oil.
Christopher -- is a former aide to New York democratic senator Chuck Schumer.
Also joining us Rich Lowry editor of the national review any Fox News contributor guys thanks so much for being here to talk about -- big -- Of the year and it's just remind our viewers of the ad they came to sort of symbolize.
This big lie and that was someone who looks suspiciously like congressman Paul Ryan -- pushing a little old lady off a cliff let's just watch a moment.
I'll rely so rich very subtle -- -- saw all lot Politico.
Says that that was the biggest lie -- a -- Paul Ryan gets his -- was not at the gym this is by the shouting.
Elderly people off cliffs look at I don't put a lot of stock in the is fact checking.
Outfits and I think there as objective as they claim to be -- in this case I think there absolutely right.
That was an obvious and blatant lie what is Medicare it's guaranteed insurance for the elderly people.
They're still would be guaranteed insurance for elderly people.
Under the Ryan plan it's just the delivery of the benefit would change but you'd still have Medicare -- people would still have health insurance so this is a blatant.
Hideous lie that all the street you know left shows you just how desperate they are not to give -- -- up into the so important to them politically Christopher what did you think.
Well you know lifted Medicare -- and but Medicare as we know it sure would.
And that's the bit that's different between this being alive being a fact that was pointed out -- article -- put it back bottom line is this.
We would no longer have a system where seniors just became of a certain agent and their health care was paid for in -- instead you'll get through it place by a voucher system that would not necessarily go -- With the cost of Medicare -- of health -- going up there will be key to general inflation but not medical inflation which has been substantially higher and would grow even higher and its plan to basically what this what Ryan plan what was it giveaway to insurance companies.
At the expense.
Of seniors and Chris let me ask you this does Medicare part.
It does yes and it's a premium support plan.
Just like Paul Ryan and agents but the restaurants and everywhere -- Medicare -- may hold on the way Medicare works now.
You you choose your doctor government pays the doctor.
Under the Ryan plan you choose your health insurance plan and government would pay a health insurance -- so government there.
Still -- angled the idea.
-- gonna say did -- -- I don't gonna put a fact did today in this.
Analysis that it would keep Medicare intact for people 55 and older the Ryan plan but it didn't change dramatically the program for everyone else by privatizing it.
And providing government subsidies so Christopher -- your point.
Why Democrats just say that I mean if it's changing Medicare as you think as we know -- why didn't they just say that why did they have to go overboard and say kill it.
Well I think that for the most part Democrats have been saying that of late but I think that it's easier to say that dramatic point and say hey look they're killing -- -- -- the end of the day.
They really are because that's what evolved into something that would ND as we know it and would cost.
Americans more credit they have -- -- the very rich is a good guy.
Drug plan is popular with seniors and operates on exactly the same principles.
And everyone agrees Medicare is out of control President Obama.
Repeatedly says Medicare is out of control so the question -- how we are gonna control it and the way the president is gonna control is for the first time ever.
Creating an arbitrary cap.
On Medicare spending which I guess and Democrats terms must -- ending Medicare is a fundamental change in housework and giving a bureaucratic panel control.
Over how to -- reach that cap.
So I did I get -- a little us you know get market for the little.
-- -- -- -- -- Or you get to bureaucrats decide.
The actress you know the market the market forces would drive up -- you know that but I'm a little surprise that you're hanging your hat got on the prescription drug benefit which is probably the biggest boondoggle that was passed during the bush.
-- worse than the bush tax cuts because it's costing Americans more than it should because it doesn't allow the government to negotiate with drug producers that you get a better price for that.
Robert Downey Arianna how our program on a second before we get too far and that means of what exactly did you write leveling in the -- -- -- is where we live at highest end.
And -- read everywhere that.
And -- -- -- -- back one of the interesting things that they said is one Democrat who they thought.
Was accurate and truthful was President Obama when he talked about the Paul Ryan plan for Medicare.
Let's play a clip of the one that they said was accurate.
-- were not willing to do is to restructure the program.
In the ways that we've seen coming out of the house over the last.
Several months where we -- -- -- as the program and you potentially have senior Citizens Bank 6000 dollars more.
Okay so rich.
What that says Belcher rising the program is the president just said that and then -- paying war was accurate why didn't the Democrats just highlight that instead of once again you know blew a lot going overboard -- one.
There's no voucher it's it's not authorizing the program if you want to be highly technical about it.
-- because obviously if you go around saying are gonna they're gonna restructure and reform Medicare that's not as scary as saying they're gonna end Medicare which Nancy Pelosi said that clip we saw with no qualification whatsoever and run ads about Paul Ryan.
Pushing all people over the cliff.
And I know.
On the -- again attrition prescription drug plan it's one of the few are probably the only health care program has come in under cost and under estimates.
Because there was a market element and what Paul Ryan and Natalie liberal Democrat caught on -- wanna do is enter a market element in cement.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- On on health insurance and if you can't afford health insurance above the discount or you need -- -- the -- the church will pay based on the government discount dub it.
You're out of -- -- -- -- your health and carry a -- picked up next to her daughter to acknowledge all the work voucher is wrong which used yourself something's wrong.
Don't say okay and I am glad I know that there.
I don't want to get back to the point about truth telling.
And the message and Christopher doesn't it undermine.
All the democrats' message when they inflate all this to it's gonna.
Pushed little old ladies off the cliff -- -- going to kill Medicare I mean doesn't that end up undermining their purpose which is highlighting these differences.
Yeah there's always a time in politics where things get exaggerated to prove a point and I think at the end of the day is there any immediate danger that Medicare as we know is gonna change.
No but there is -- danger of opening up a can of worms that will lead to this program that had been so successful.
And so good for so many Americans to be ruined.
-- well it's been -- -- doesn't matter if you're speeding -- the bottom line -- government is not a business is it government grants at apple.
Eating that the federal budget even President Obama acknowledges we need to do something about it.
Instead of giving readers more choice and answering some market forces into it he wants to have an arbitrary cap on spending and 25 -- which means doctored will be paid less you'll see more more doctors leaving the program.
That'll become my body or sure like if we've got to OK but -- what they like you're saying Christopher is that.
You know it doesn't make for as catchy and add to say hey there's no immediate danger.
Not -- -- bottom line is this.
Every party has been accused of demagoguing put it back made the live here two years ago death panels.
And there were no death panels -- -- they called the American care act.
Republicans called it government takeover of health care which it's clearly out of actually the same thing at the -- program except for the entire country would be involved -- -- -- -- -- It it's.
I don't support.
Wrap I don't understand what right does -- support.
You know the president of America is very easy -- security is he watched all I care.
Paul -- -- take Medicare in a more market oriented direction.
President Obama wants to take the entire health care system in a more government oriented direction that's it a big.
Difference all right got the -- there -- stadium -- -- all I could go actress.
I don't like my favorite can a lot of great -- -- -- Rick stick please keep Paul right away from my grandma.
I'm very happy.
Both are committed as I trawler telling yours is nice young man -- supermodel Rich Lowry optional.
