-- in 2011 New Jersey governor Chris Christie burst on to the national political scene.
And made a name for themselves -- with no nonsense moments like this one.
I asked people to not take a raise for a year.
And to pay one half percent of their salary Schwartz -- benefits.
And your union has said that that that that.
He's the greatest assault a public education in history at the state that's why the union has no credibility stupid statements like that.
Okay.
Them.
And it's just one by the greatest hits and when he -- I'm 2011 he then found himself in the center of -- heated called to run for the White House.
Until this.
Now is not my time.
I have a commitment to New Jersey that I simply will not abandon.
He's a bad day that he and his wife Mary pat made the decision together.
Mary pat Christie is also getting used to the limelight these days and the future expectations that surround her husband.
So how does she deal with all of best I asked -- that during part two of my interview with the Christie's.
-- Said in LA weekly -- assessment that we -- -- family I had a great partner.
Chris is a really great father and a great husband so we really -- work hard at it and our children on our on the team -- So I have to tell you that our attitudes kind of are in the mindset that we're so lucky to be here.
So it all comes into place really does and I loved every part of my life I really enjoy so I feel so fortunate to still be able work.
And still you'll be -- mom and -- -- different signatures leading new Jersey's pretty amazing honor and he.
You know this the first -- -- video sat down together for something like this and I think everybody.
Has gotten to know you a little bank Governor Christie and sometimes what they see is you know -- the -- sound -- that gets pulled out of a town hall.
But you know what time was dynamic -- with you guys what does this partnership.
Like you know for the visiting my say -- no -- -- like being married to happen.
Well listen you know we a lot of it goes back to how -- we've been together mirror have now been married 26 years.
He and in March.
And so we we -- college so well before I ever -- about becoming governor of New Jersey I was Mary Pat's husband.
And so here -- we're best friends first.
The and other people.
And then eventually started dating ourselves and got married relatively quickly.
And so the relationship is always to departure from beginning.
No we got married -- the law school.
And Mary pat was the one who's working full time I was working part time and she -- support -- family and and and help immediate finish -- law school and so.
You know we've.
We've been partners in all this for from the beginning and and now with our four children you know we act as partners again and -- and so.
I think what -- people see on TV for me is who I am and -- why -- home to.
But I have someone equally strong that as a partner so far pushing pushes back if she feels like that -- -- -- you want to do at that point and we've been doing that -- each other for 26 years in addition to support each other.
And you know we made the decision.
Which over there was one weekend I gas when you give some serious consideration.
To running in what you said when -- came at that.
News conference that day was that Mary -- and TO.
You know if you wanna do -- I'm I'm -- and I and I think up until that point it was not something that you wanted was.
No.
It was something that I was at the end of the day really supportive of what Chris wants detail.
But.
From a personal perspective I wasn't crazy about making that sacrifice at this time and allies because of how -- youngest child eight.
Sell on but at the end of the day if it was the right thing to do I was happy to be on board.
What was that like when your cabinet discussions.
Mean.
It was it was something it was exciting and it was -- that we had beyond earth I would say.
But the end of the day we both felt -- in Munich -- the state New Jersey and on -- more important.
And down there was no obligation.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- You know and -- said that he thinks that relationship that you met Ronnie have had.
Is is a novel one he said you know I I haven't seen a pairing like that this early on in the process.
And he's -- anybody Chris Christie would be on anybody's shortlist for vice president.
Do you think it's a novel role that you're playing in this in this process.
I'm just to every asked me -- do that's consistent with our responsibilities here in New Jersey and so.
Up up and we have a very candid relationship with each other.
He calls and and we talk quote Harpo what's going on the campaign he asked for my thoughts and I give them to him.
And so attacked about vice presidential -- now.
And never come up never come out now.
-- I don't think you talk about that -- I think if you nominate your free department with the fewer jinx yourself.
Police are too I feel about it and he is that that's me but I'll that he wants -- presumptuous enough so talk with somebody by vice president.
When he's not yet the nominee on the -- when he talked about once -- you know shows up the nomination and the and I and I hope that we'll talk to a -- range of people.
To try to find the partner.
That he thinks will best serve him and best serve America.
You have said who would want me to be their vice president in -- and my personality and it.
It you know what do you think that he would be willing to have somebody as strong and is out there Ngo.
In in the number two spot I don't know that this can.
Last connect panacea but -- air -- close in the -- I think it's presumptuous to do that market you know -- -- for president that's my decision and Mary Pat's decision alone we decide that.
Vice presidents the decision of only one person.
Where the nominee your party is I think it's awful to say I won't do something when hasn't been offered.
On the fact is if governor Romney comes to me.
And wants to talk to me about that we'll have a full complete conversation about it and then there have make decision about what we want to -- future.
But my view is I think if you.
Fast forward to tape two year from now.
I think it's gonna be president elect Romney -- had some other vice president elect in the Chris Christie the governor of New Jersey nobody ever turns it down.
Mean.
I don't know it's pretty I don't know about that gesture of Gerald Ford turned down -- From Ronald Reagan in 1988 so -- people do that I -- usual circumstances but I'll tell you mark I think.
Nobody's I think who's had an offer to them has had a great job -- -- half.
I love my job and so the idea is not well just look at for the next promotion on the latter.
Bubble can make a difference and New Jersey every day I'm making a difference of belief that and that's what we got -- the public service we're not get a title.
But to get something done.
And so that's why -- I could envision myself saying no.
Because if I feel it can be really effective here and there's more to do here then -- -- wanna stay here.
-- -- Very interesting.
Speaking to the two of them.
And you know I got as a New Jersey person is a pretty great -- I mean you know.
That's the united Auburn New Jersey I gotta get much better and that got it -- coolest thing about Christie is that he's seen Springsteen in concert 120 times -- -- really is a Jersey definitely is so much for the call.
