I think right now we're going to -- -- -- coffee in the last fifteen Iowa injuring his right now a very familiar guy Mitt Romney good morning to you sir.
Good morning Steve are you done a doing OK so you are in the midst of a bus tour in Iowa.
You don't in the beginning a couple of months ago it didn't sound like you're gonna spend much time in Iowa but now your surgeon in the polls has there been a change in strategy.
Well the response has been very positive you know I had a big event last night in Davenport.
We expect that about a 150 I think close to 800 people showed up for -- a lot of enthusiasm.
And so we're we're gauging that enthusiasm is a sign that we had to put more time and energy and -- hopefully doing real well here in Iowa.
That's hard to come Monday Morning Quarterback this governor but I mean you look back on as a suicide or kind of stance and a neck and -- here now and I know if we had maybe -- more resources into missing from the beginning -- might be a walk to deal a deal look back on this.
-- -- I guess what's important to us is to make sure that we who.
Where that that the team that comes up with 11150 delegates and so we're gonna campaign and all the states.
Do our very best to pick up those delegates site I want to do well here -- Iowa sure I'd like to win every state but I know I can put all of them but.
The good news for me is that over the last several weeks the support from our campaign is growing.
And and that -- -- momentum towards the beginning of the process here is is very very encouraging.
Now governor yesterday in Iowa you made some news when you responded to Newt Gingrich.
Comparing his inability to get on the Virginia ballot to like Pearl Harbor and you -- actually.
It's more like Lucille Ball and what happened in the chocolate factory.
You mean by that.
You know what we all make mistakes -- on other campaigns or get things done quite right I don't compare those mistakes to a Pearl Harbor.
What what I see mistakes I try to find little -- in this case Lucille Ball of the chocolate factory you may remember that sketch where.
Or chocolates were coming out of the machine yes you -- stuff and in the Barcelona.
At least thirty -- says.
Yet it is yes it's a classic it's such classics in those of us that have gotten a little behind.
Can identify with Corliss it.
Well I let me let me ask you this is yesterday you mentioned Lucille Ball -- it today here on a bus -- Any chance -- crammed in in the honeymooners is gonna come up because we got the video for that.
One of these days Alice one of these.
How well the bottom half well we don't have Alice cued up but we do have Newt Gingrich -- responding to yours sitcom slap at them.
I'd love didn't send it to my -- if you wanna run a negative campaigning you wanna -- people at least be man enough government.
You want you to respond face to face on that -- -- chance I know we also challenge -- blood activating duel yesterday.
You know I hope the speaker understands that that was Schumer.
-- it could -- by by humorous.
Anecdote to him face to face and then look for to -- -- by the way we've.
We've had I don't know ten or twelve debates will be debated each other along with others we have two more that are now scheduled for January.
If it comes down to this the two of us at some point we will debate person to person but you know right now.
They're a bunch of folks in this race that are still in the race.
Newton are not necessarily number one and number two across sedation so we're gonna have to narrow it down and and -- religious but I -- a debate all the major candidates.
You know you mentioned some other candidates in this race and there are some other good candidates who have have been critical view and -- including Newt Gingrich calling you up in Massachusetts moderates is the new moniker they've been -- labelling you and Rick Santorum in an interview this week says there are three primaries happening right now are in in in Iowa.
Ron Paul's stuff primary.
And then the one between UN Newt Gingrich as the moderates and then he as the true conservative in the race you're being painted as a moderate here.
Are you not conservative enough for Iowa.
Well the good news is that people can look at my record in Massachusetts and at that describes more than anyone word exactly what I believe a balance the budget all four years I was governor.
Restored a two billion dollar rainy day fund.
A -- we had English Immersion in our schools empowered our state police to enforce immigration laws help drive our schools to be number one of the nation.
I've got a record of conservative principles that I think people recognize and that's why I've seen the kind of support I've had.
In places like at New Hampshire this next door where they they know my record pretty well and and frankly right here in Iowa I've seen the kind of surge of enthusiasm I need to have confidence -- -- pretty darn well here.
And governor are you left -- the Health Care Reform that you also passed in Massachusetts as governor that some people refer to as.
Romney care and it's interesting because Newt Gingrich.
Has criticized you for that up of the Wall Street Journal unearthed something from his website.
Back in 2006.
Where he seems to applaud.
Some portions of that I'll read it to you he says we agree entirely with governor Romney Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100%.
Insurance coverage for all.
Americans what do you make of what he said back then.
Well like I knew that he supported the plan in the past and and then I've I believe you supported a toll got into the race this year but maybe before that he changed his view.
Look our plan was right for our state.
And and in my view is based upon conservative principles that that frankly came from Newt Gingrich of The Heritage Foundation which wasn't set of people.
Relying on government to provide their care.
They should take personal responsibility.
And the plan is that not perfect things I'd change it -- but I'll stand by the things we've we've done and and make sure people understand -- I would do what I think is right for the people but I represented and that case I was doing what I think was right for the people of Massachusetts.
Well after Newt Gingrich's comments were reprinted from back then in 2006.
He had a lot of explaining to do keep in that -- thing going here he is yesterday explaining his comments on.
Your health care plan in Massachusetts.
That is Enron here we both used to have the wrong idea.
I want to say it was wrong idea he's done.
Is funny that they -- actually preventing that I was room they don't even that he is now wrong things still right when he's wrong.
Okay so -- says side he made a mistake and he says he's wrong but you won't.
You know -- he's made a number of mistakes very recently of us -- this presidential campaign I'm happy to stand by the things I believe.
I'm not gonna change my positions by virtue of being in a presidential campaign what we did was right for the people of Massachusetts the plant is still favored -- by three to one.
And it is fundamentally a conservative principle two insists that people take.
Personal responsibility as opposed to turning to government for giving out free care and loop current governor -- -- caught.
