-- suspends his campaign everybody he has not he has just begun to fight in in the battle of conservatism.
Texas governor Rick Perry.
Bailing out of the race for the 2012 Republican nomination and endorsing Newt Gingrich there.
Let's talk about it with Stephen large and political reporter at the Spartanburg herald journal.
In the past few days Mitt Romney had -- and widening his lead somewhat over Newt Gingrich.
If my reading of the polls is correct.
What does this -- endorsement due to that equation.
Well some of the -- -- cannot yesterday actually showed Newt Gingrich closing the gap a little bit.
-- have deleted about ten points now but what it does is it's it's one -- candidate to split the vote.
Among the anti Romney vote and you know he didn't have a lot of traction here in South Carolina particularly in upstate but.
Anything that that you know minimizes that split between then the -- Romney candidates for Gingrich is a good thing for him.
Going forward he was polling at about 4%.
-- Governor Perry was in South Carolina.
Does one assume that all of those you know four percentage point voters are going to be going to Newt Gingrich because of the governor's endorsement or you know might some of them go over to Rick Santorum -- -- Ron Paul maybe Mitt Romney.
We don't really know what's gonna happen -- it generally voters don't move -- sickly like that.
During and you know following an endorsement.
You know a lot of the support for Governor Perry were evangelical voters and -- Very well could have reservations about about Newt Gingrich.
For some of the same reasons that Governor Perry just alluded to.
In his speech we -- we don't know what's gonna happen some of them could go to Santorum some could do to.
Governor Romney.
And yet there is still a lot of resistance to governor Romney in South Carolina is -- there.
There is though -- there was there's been some surprising numbers have come out and polling -- the the Tea Party here.
And also -- poll that came out this morning from Politico.
That broke the broke the pulled down by it by region.
Governor Romney was only two points behind.
Newt Gingrich here enough -- -- South Carolina.
Which is that area that that Newt -- -- really gonna have to it to do very well in our doubts that governor Romney here he wants seven it kind of chance well it looks like.
It's going to be a horse race maybe a photo finish between governor Romney and and Newt Gingrich especially with this Gingrich endorsement today by Rick Perry.
Much has been made I mean we talk about it on this channel all the time of south Carolina's record of picking the person who eventually goes on to win the Republican nomination.
What do the voters there actually think about that record.
Asked the -- people about this yesterday and it at a Romney event.
They told me that they really don't don't worry about that that that does not affect the way if they're gonna vote on Saturday.
You know I talk and talk -- about it with some strategists and GOP strategists and then even they admit that it's kind of -- record that that the establishment GOP.
Really cares about more than than your average voter.
All right thanks very much Stephen margin from the Spartanburg herald journal out there on the west side of the State's -- back.
