-- less than an hour to go before the polls open in South Carolina so how big a factor will religion be in the outcome of today's primary.
Evangelical Christians make up about 60%.
These champions in South Carolina in joining us now -- his thoughts is the president of the southern Baptist leadership convention doctor Richard Land doctor nice to see this morning welcome with the show.
Good morning it.
On existing morning I can imagine what it must have been like last night around dinner tables across South Carolina because there are so many undecided voters.
The question though that I've been hearing from pundits over the past few weeks is look economics trumps social issues right now.
Because South Carolina has so many folks out of work is that the case when people go to the polls today.
I don't think so of there's broad agreement of social issues among the candidates especially the top three.
You know there's really no not that much ideological difference there's differences in style.
There's differences -- emphasis.
And of course you have to Catholics.
In Santorum and Gingrich -- you have.
01 Mormon in in governor Romney in and so.
You have and interestingly not a Protestant in the top three having -- doctor Paul's Lutheran by Bagram.
One out of every four voters is South Carolina is -- southern Baptist.
So there's going to be a lot of southern Baptist voting today and I know southern baptists who are supporting all four candidates.
-- doctor land on the let's not Newt Gingrich is surge in the past 36 hours I know that.
All evangelicals don't speak with one -- -- vote the same way but is there any way to categorize.
How evangelicals are feeling today about Newt Gingrich.
You know in the guy's got charisma of the guys got.
He's obviously brilliant.
But he does have baggage it's it's a personal baggage some would say freight.
That particularly causes women voters to have cause I've -- You know right now all the polling shows that he's has twice as many men voted for him and women.
But you know I think I've figured out -- TV series that that that is an analogy for this race it's happy days.
Ritchie Cunningham is Rick Santorum mr.
Cunningham as governor Romney posse is doctor Paul.
And and -- the funds.
And I was okay.
And may god he's got the charisma he's got he's got the moxie but do you want him for president and what the fonts for president.
That's an interesting question you have not endorsed any candid -- you see you holding out so you.
You'd like to support the most conservative pro life candidate that stands the best chance of beating President Obama.
Cool is that I mean if folks are going to vote today who is that candidate.
Well I don't think south Carolina's gonna determine that I think that frankly I think mr.
Gingrich is gonna win this South Carolina.
Which means the process will continue its not gonna end early its gonna in late it's going to be a marathon not a sprint it's gonna go way beyond Florida.
And it'll be the candidate who can convince.
The republic in the voters that he has the best chance.
Of beating mr.
Obama in November.
You heard it here doctor Richard Land saying.
-- -- to win at -- so if he doesn't jump the shark.
And as a Ponzi did not updated at the end of had -- didn't -- -- -- -- Thanks so much doctor land for being -- us a thank you and.
