We are getting new information on a dramatic military raid that rescued two hostages from Somali kidnappers.
One of the kidnap victims an American woman.
The special ops team carrying out the daring mission in Somalia over night.
American Jessica Buchanan and a Danish colleague Paul -- -- had been held at a compound there.
After they were kidnapped at gunpoint back in -- -- October.
We'll also we are also learning that the seal team that rescued them is the same special ops team involved in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.
Peter Brookes is a former CIA officer and -- Heritage Foundation senior fellow.
Peter it's good to have you on just give us you're your your thumbnail headline about this raids.
Well thank god we have such brave troops that can go in harm's way in support of our our national security it's great to have those hostages back.
But there's a bigger issue here John and that Somalia.
-- -- yet not just these a modern day Barbary pirates.
That took these people hostage but we also have a -- terrorist group there trans national terrorist group called Al should Bob.
Which has recruited -- Americans and has undertaken terrorist acts in other places of Africa so we're involved in this sort of offshore.
Containment policy of the of the Somalia which has been a country that hasn't had a government a fully functioning government for some twenty years now.
Well it I guess it raises some questions I mean of them Americans.
Our big hearted people but when you go into a country like that -- are you taking your life in your hands I mean is it worth it to use to risk.
You know our military forces to rescue people who put themselves and harm -- harms way.
Well that's a very good question of course this woman was involved in.
Hostages well they do this to try to get ransom.
I mean it's a very difficult issue here real people try to do the right thing to humanitarian things when they do sometimes put themselves in harm's way and it's not just -- in a place like.
A some -- Africa there's places in Pakistan and other places I mean.
Somalian Pakistan are arguably two of the most dangerous places in the world today so yes that's a very agers -- sort of question you would hope.
That these groups would not get in the way like -- Bob is getting in the way of famine relief that's also going on in Somalia today he would hope that these groups would look to these people.
As targets but unfortunately they do so you have to balance the good work that they are trying to do in these countries with the -- that they they take.
By going in harm's way to help out people who need help.
The word of this raid was apparently while the -- was still going on while the president was getting ready for or even making his state of the union speech.
We heard him saying to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta good job tonight Leon good job tonight.
As he was on his way into the speech you had written yesterday kind of ironically it did you -- -- -- more from the president.
America's position in the world and and you know our foreign policy.
You here's -- in your lines in the end you can't help but feel you wrote Peter.
American strategy is adrift with team Obama presiding over our decline as a world power tonight meaning state of the union.
Will be a great time for the president to make the case to the contrary if that's possible that he make that case.
No he didn't.
He made a lot of great tributes to our troops and I'm I'm thankful he did that.
He spent very little time on foreign policy it was the end of his speech -- almost -- like he was responding -- -- -- flatter myself with that but that -- -- on the New York Post yesterday and he -- anybody thinks that America is in decline is -- doesn't know what they're talking about but I'm afraid that's the perception around the world we're seeing a lot of people take actions against the United States such as Iran and their -- because -- perceptions of weakness.
I mean well John how we going to deal with growing global challenges with a shrinking US military.
I mean there's a lot of things what about peace talks with the -- bond the president didn't talk about that what about this reports of direct talks between Washington today -- A rising China there's so many things that the president really needed to talk about last night on.
Foreign policy and he didn't he -- a few sentences but there was a lot of substance there are now understand there's a lot of things to talk about.
Especially domestic issues but considering we have you know more than a 100000 troops are nearly a 100000 troops in Afghanistan.
You know we're still good -- this raid in Somalia I think there was a lot more that the president needed to tell us and once again I'm really concerned about perception of America's decline perception American weakness because once again.
Perception is reality and it's important what the American people and what the world thinks of us he did mention -- they wouldn't take any options off the table but we're gonna talk about that another time Peter -- from Heritage Foundation Peter thank you.
