This same administration.
Said that churches.
In the institutions they -- Such as schools and let's say adoption agencies hospitals.
That they have to provide for their employees -- of a charge.
Morning after pills.
In other words a board of pills and and the like at no cost.
Think what that does to people in face -- did not share those views this is a violation of conscience.
We must have a president who was willing to protect America's first right our right to worship god.
Was former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney campaigning -- Centennial, Colorado.
A state where they are going to have some caucuses today.
And this is power play welcome back welcome back to Susan -- chief congressional correspondent for the Washington examiner cherished friend and colleague.
And that we're gonna be joined we believe by Tim -- congressman from Ohio directly.
But until we hear from the congressman Susan let's talk let's let's brush out the broad strokes of of this issue.
So the the Department of Health and Human Services is saying that eight.
An insurance company -- health care provider may not refuse to provide contraception.
What is technically known as an abortion backed into -- -- what -- what pro life you'll say is a pregnancy and in the very early stages immediately after conception.
-- in the morning after -- what have you.
How how is this setting up what's that you give us the broad strokes here.
Let me just say that is not sitting well with particularly the Catholic Church Catholics believe life begins at conception.
System as as do a lot it's a great many others but in particularly Catholics who believe effected by this because say.
Run -- hospitals and provides services for people and that includes health care if they're asked to also include.
-- contraception and these kinds of materials that to them really equates to abortion or ending life.
Hours or preventing life even to sterilization you know -- that the Catholic Church does not advocate for -- birth control pills either.
They they have a different you know they I'm Catholic I know I -- every week in church.
This is something that they are not going to go along with they will not provide these services for people at all if this comes it is actually comes to play here for announcer saying.
So what they're doing out of all the Catholic bishops going -- spreading the word.
Letters being read at mass.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Our troops -- troops literally today that there is a big prefer -- Inside the army because the -- Catholic chaplain for the united states army is center for the united states military is calling on chaplains across the armed services.
To speak out against this and all of this up to this and you know who else is Catholic and you know who else lives in a swing state as you do.
Tim Tim Ryan congressman Tim Ryan from the Buckeye State the great state of Ohio congressman how we doing today.
-- -- -- -- Oh good good good we were just talking.
About this this whole blow up over we heard Mitt Romney railing against the president on this contraception.
Not ruling from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Rick Santorum certainly has been.
Part after this show has Newt Gingrich it's a big field.
Republicans think that they have found a way to put a wedge in between President Obama and Catholic voters you are from a state and represented a district that is -- slope of Catholic voters.
You're Roman Catholic yourself is this a weak spot for the president is this a place of exposure for him when it comes to the 2012 election.
Well I think the Republicans are really overplaying their hand here because of when this all comes out in the wash in the next few weeks and months and we get move into the general election where there is a Republican candidate the bottom line is going to be.
Do you believe that women should have access to birth control and do you believe that birth control should be used by women.
That's that's how this is gonna play out once the dust settles and and Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich -- Rick Santorum.
The three people will be on the Republican ticket you would think.
And they're gonna have to defend a position that says we are against birth control -- -- not whether or not the Catholic Church should distribute it.
But whether or not there against birth control and many other Republicans.
A from the extreme radical right wing a lot of the Tea Party candidates are against birth control and they're gonna have to go to.
Catholic women and Catholic independence.
You know which are very very high percentage have used birth control on their lives and defend at end of Obama saying we should have access and women should have access.
And the opportunity to -- the size of their own families.
Now congressman you have succeeded.
In a part of the state.
Thank your district Republicans in this state legislature took it district away from you for the upcoming.
Elections -- -- you've got to slide over.
Closer to Cleveland write your your district is sort of amused glance -- -- right.
I -- take a little.
More of that -- 9 AM Akron and summit county is now my largest county and I also have some of Stark County as well as well as Youngstown Warren.
So good chunk of that whole industrial belt south of Cleveland.
And I know that being from Wheeling, West Virginia I know those folks well and I know that in 2004.
Candidates like yourself were able to because you are Roman Catholic -- -- -- hometown guy you were able to make -- -- to your voters that you understood this John Kerry was less successful in making that argument and George W.
Bush beat him over the head with it.
And won the state by about a 1101000.
Ohio no matter what happens -- one thing that we can do right now we want to do -- make our hotel reservations.
For Ohio for the week before the election it will come down to your state.
Does -- Obama need to do something different in Ohio.
To avoid suffering the same -- -- John Kerry didn't 2000.
Well I think he's on message this is going to be a an issue that it will be around the fringes I think come election time.
Because economics we're hearing.
You know job numbers and whatnot but that's going to be them number one issue where the jobs.
-- and who can do a better job this will be.
On the outside of that debate and I think Obama when you look at the auto industry him saving it in in my district alone 4500 jobs in Lordstown we're -- the Chevy cruise.
The top selling GM car we got Clint eastwood's endorsement during the season.
-- for a dirty air on my local and countries and dirty -- drove the forty drove a Ford galaxy 500 I'm just saying that for the record.
There record is there but -- -- that used these issues you know.
Obama put tariffs on Chinese to -- coming in that's a strong issue among -- voters.
He slapped tariffs on Chinese tires coming in that's a strong issue couple that with the auto industry.
We've got a very strong economic message and my hope is that quite frankly Catholics will start.
Talking about the fact that President Obama.
Ended the war in Iraq that President Obama is gonna wind down the war in Afghanistan both of those are consistent with the church teachings.
He's been the only major politician in the country given that Republicans that.
Are running against them that it's actually talking about poverty and lifting people up and making investments in the head start -- poverty programs.
Those are all consistent with Catholic teachings in the social gospel and so my hope is -- Catholics look -- -- entire record on this thing.
And at the end of the day I think they're gonna vote for Obama.
And -- has your race shaping up are you feeling confident.
Were working hard but.
Nothing that's good season -- Patricio your -- -- -- -- Is from Washington Examiner's Susan you have any questions for the congressman you follow this stuff very closely.
AM I think it's interesting you say that -- that -- -- look at the economy and look at the war and other issues I think Ohio will be looking at the economy certainly thanks.
Hey you know this is fair to say though that -- the bishops.
And addressing this issue and that in in churches every weekend.
That the heads of these Catholic Church is -- any talking to parishioners about this issue.
Health insurance and feeling like they're being stepped on by the Obama administration.
Is -- something now that present you think President Obama should do at this point to try to counter any backlash she may receive from them.
Well I think you should hold on hold the line right now -- and see how this plays out the meaning you know the president made a decision.
The secretary health and human services has made a decision.
And so I think you know just -- to keep it as it is for now.
And you know let this thing play out because at the end of the day I'm telling me I've been in Ohio my entire life.
The number one issue facing voters in Ohio is going to be the issue of jobs and economics.
And if people have jobs.
-- they feel like the country's gaining jobs and moving in the right direction like we are right now.
They're gonna be more inclined to vote for President Obama and and I think quite frankly that's the bottom line people -- gonna.
Both their pocketbook in this issue like -- in this election like they do in most elections.
Congressman Tim Ryan you are gracious as always to join us here in studio three we have we hope you have a great Tuesday -- to take care.
Okay Susan shall we see what the -- -- talking about -- I think we should fight so here's what Mike Carter says I thought super pacs were in theory.
Separate from I think that in series was to mean that sarcastic -- those are sarcastic -- parentheses.
Separate from the campaign Obama's campaign is the first I've heard telling people to contribute should act rather than the campaign.
Is it Obama's campaign crossing a line here.
Basically the answer is the law allows you as the Republicans have prevented the -- elastic enough that allows you to talk about this campaign this -- -- as much as you want you can talk about it every day what you can't do is coordinate with it so you can say talk about it but not to -- you talk about you just can't talk with it but you could stand next to it you can stand next to the super back -- I sure wish that the super -- were running some attack ads and -- I don't right now he just -- -- comments -- -- and yes two prevent the follow -- statement from Mike -- yes it is just -- way to organize the rules.
And then here's -- Phillip -- Obama and super -- what choice does he have -- actual facts -- a sad method for elections but what else can you do when your opponent is making himself look better -- shoveling tons of dirt on you -- -- take your point -- and Obama has no choice -- to do this power play itself still maintains that -- that this -- here may be too far.
Even for a president who is very good at straddling.
Okay let's take a break in when.
