Fox News alert on new fallout in the Susan G.
Komen foundation controversy over Planned Parenthood funding.
Karen Handel a top executive -- the breast cancer charity has just resigned.
-- this drama started a week ago when Susan G.
Komen for the Cure decided to cut funding to Planned Parenthood because that group -- under congressional investigation.
The decision sparked a firestorm and just days later the breast cancer charity reversed itself under enormous public pressure.
Then earlier today a high ranking executive at -- stepped out saying she was dismayed.
At the flip flop.
That executive Karen -- joins us now in her first national interview on the issue Karen thank you so much for being here.
Let's get to the bottom of this -- and a lot of speculation.
About your role in this in the Huffington Post came out today.
With a long interview -- claiming that -- spoken with anonymous sources and review documents.
And they say you were the sole authority in crafting and implementing this policy at -- that would defund.
Planned Parenthood your response.
-- Well first of I I clearly acknowledge that I was involved in the process.
But to suggest that I had those sole authority it's just that third.
The -- was vetted the policies were vetted at all the appropriate level in the organization but I think the real point here is that.
You know it might well keep in mind isn't -- come for the cure first of all -- is a great organization.
And then -- time I checked.
Private nonprofit organizations have a right.
In the responsibility.
To be able to set the highest standards and criteria on -- and without interference.
Let alone malevolent vicious attacks and coercion that that the -- By Planned Parenthood it's it simply outrageous -- you amazed by the push back.
That followed when Susan G.
Komen decided to defund Planned Parenthood.
-- -- -- -- Absolutely I think you four come in and you know obviously pleased now I'm speaking for myself than I did resign this morning.
And then now to clarify that I resign -- -- because.
It was clear that.
All of this had gotten to a point where.
They wish ratcheted that hi I would too much of a focal point and didn't -- come for the -- is a truly great organization that has done wonderful things.
It is made and in extraordinary impact in the fight against breast cancer and I really thought I had a responsibility to just step aside to that they could refocus on their mission.
Understood but there was of course a lot of push back and and many people believe they admitted you were responsible for that you're the person because he would run for office prior to joining -- meaning you had said you wanted to defund Planned Parenthood were in terms of taxpayer dollars.
And that you brought that agenda with you when you went to -- I I -- I'm not suggesting that that's right or wrong I'm just trying to ask you whether that is true.
Absolutely not or comment for myself the mission was always foremost in everyone's mind the mission and the women that -- -- And for anyone and the only group -- has made that the issue political.
Had been Planned Parenthood and whenever an organization is looking and that they're granting portfolio they want to do high quality grant.
And have the strongest most stringent criteria they can't.
And what was unleashed over this past week was a vicious attack against a great organization.
And frankly individual attacks against Nancy Brinker in individual whom I admire greatly and I would think all of us should be that -- an outside organization will put this kind of pressure.
Are -- another organization around their properties in granting and how they do it and to whom they are going to grant it.
That -- people believed it was it was a front for the truth is this stuff about you know we have to defund Planned Parenthood because they're under congressional investigation.
Because a lot of all the organization that komen funds.
Only want wanna be -- -- as Planned Parenthood so it it didn't smell right it didn't pass this melt at -- -- like planned parent it was indeed.
The targeted organization and one -- just come out and say.
We have a problem funding this organization.
You know I think speaker at congressional investigation a long list the various state investigation those were eight factor in the decision.
But make no mistake about it.
You know that it was a bigger picture than that there is a granting criteria as well as the controversy that were surrounding Planned Parenthood and it's no secret Megan.
That you know komen and other organizations that report -- Planned Parenthood had been under pressure for some -- -- before my time.
-- thing going on the -- the pressure around the controversy and and you know I'm not gonna get into union too much on the internal aspect that -- but.
You think this organization had a right to make what it felt -- the best decision.
For the mission for that mission he and I think everyone can agree that if you had to -- -- -- where there's this type of controversy surrounding it.
-- was doing its level best to move to neutral ground and I would say I was asked to look at.
At options for doing that some alternatives -- I'm saying that does belong in a cheaper come out and dealing with -- controversy the plane apparently got and they.
Can't against doing that.
Let me ask if -- know obviously what what made a lot of news last week was that was the push back by Planned Parenthood supporters who were outraged at the original komen decision what did not make as much news.
But was also obviously a thread.
Was the celebration by many who are who consider themselves pro life of the decision have you heard from those.
In the -- and your decision today and in the wake of the news that broke last week.
I've not personally heard today has been.
The busy morning for me and trying to sort things through -- and making sure we carry everything forward appropriately.
As far as you know that it no one wanted to make that this celebration about anything -- whole purpose was to try to get to -- -- that neutral ground.
And then than that -- that that comment was not in the middle of that -- that we could be squarely focused on our mission and serving the women can you tell us.
Karen you know -- Susan G.
Komen reversed its decision last week.
They were -- Kind of vague about the reasons.
What happened what why did they reversed themselves.
Look I think you can just see the pressure that was mounting around then.
You know I'm an always be a professional I'm not planning to go into those details let me -- -- women that.
But it's clear that there is enormous pressure on the organization enormous pressure.
And you know why I disagree I respect the organization's right to make that decision and and -- -- court.
I know that they've offered you the severance package which you have declined -- you can bet.
Look this is a nonprofit and I'm very much aware of that and you know I didn't.
I I was doing my job night in and I wasn't interested in having.
A paycheck or or or written check for myself.
Digit simply go away and I wanted to do the right thing on my own terms and that that I talked to him I know that they've accepted your resignation and paid yet he -- -- you mentioned has wished you that the best.
In your future endeavors Karen thank you -- this fantastic organization.
