A closer look at the Santorum momentum -- congressional correspondent Mike Emanuel reports on how far the former Pennsylvania senator has come.
And how far he still has to go.
Let me apologize.
And for be elated.
We're late because that we had a few television interviews this morning that we had to do.
Newly found attention for former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum who started his race for the White House last June when most polls had him in single digits.
Last night santorum's -- -- like an underdog over achiever.
Tonight we had an opportunity to see what a campaign looks like when one candidate is and outspent five or ten to one.
By negative ads computing their integrity and distorting the record.
This is a more accurate representation frankly.
Of what the fall race we'll look like but it's been a long struggle.
When the Republican field is more crowded with candidates Santorum frequently complained about not getting enough attention that you guys have been given these guys a lot of time and not a whole lot of time to get the right answer that yes -- high.
His early strategy involved visiting all 99 Iowa counties emphasizing old fashioned retail politics.
It also included convincing the American people that he could be a serious national candidate despite losing his last bid for reelection in 2006 by seventeen points.
This campaign is about scratching and clawing for every little bit of recognition we can -- I had to wave my name.
And as for recognition.
This is the little engine that could campaign.
Yet even when his hard work in Iowa paid off with a victory wasn't recognized until.
Eighteen days later too late for a bump in New Hampshire.
And when the candidates in the media were focused on South Carolina -- -- now what Mitt Romney Newt Gingrich attacking one another he's santorum's campaign has gained new life.
It's an amazing comeback he deserves a lot of credit it's true that Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich created the conditions that enabled him to flourish.
But he had to do a lot of over flourishing on his own.
And savage it was says well -- -- started out small he's arrived he may have been Rodney Dangerfield at one point but he sure got everybody's respect now.
No question about it he has so managed to forge ahead when few thought he could.
And he's done so on fumes.
Santorum told supporters today no one ever thinks he can win anything and called that a gift.
-- last night's victories his aides say he raised 250000 dollars online overnight.
Critical -- going to try to take momentum and resources into the battles ahead.
Brett Warren all of this in the state of the race with the panel Mike thank.
