Everybody I'm Neil Cavuto and indications this hour that the president is ready to at least partially dial back what Mitt Romney calls.
His biggest overreach.
Telling religious employers.
To cover birth control in their employee health -- Now it might not be -- -- then no pun intended the devil is in the it's too little too late.
I think the White House has shown its hand already -- they they began with an assault.
Suggesting that the government should determine who minister is and not a religion make -- that choice on their own.
The Supreme Court turned them down on that 190.
And of course this effort with for guys to contraception and the day after pill.
And and sterilization is is outrageous assault on religious conscience in this country.
They've clearly suffered enormously at the hands of not just the people in the Catholic Church who are affected directly.
But -- people of all faiths and and they're gonna have to retreat or suffer enormous consequence and ultimately they will retreat as forced by the Supreme Court.
Or by the next election if they don't retreat now on their own.
Do you think governor that your nearest opponent right now Rick Santorum.
-- Seized on this and main be don't that a steam on this be.
It in Colorado in Missouri and Minnesota not only because he protests of this is a Catholic.
But he has made the social conservative issues such a linchpin in this campaign.
You know I can't to tell you that it the other -- -- senator santorum's campaign but I certainly can tell you that the assault under the religious liberty in this country.
Is an area that that has great -- support and energy and passion behind it it's something I share when I was -- governor in my state.
The legislature passed a bill saying emergency contraception.
I was could be provided through Catholic hospitals and other institutions I vetoed that bill what we we have found from liberals across the country -- an effort to.
Impose their will on religious organizations on the population at large and that's something we have to fight at every turn.
Were you surprised that you mentioned liberals governor that even there are a good met him a place.
-- -- taking the administration to task on us.
You know what I'm I'm happy to see that individuals recognize that that there's more than one part of the First Amendment.
And the protection of religious liberty is also there not just the freedom of the press.
And and I and I appreciate the fact that that people on both sides of the aisle and even the Supreme Court when it related to determining who was a minister.
The liberals on the court sided with with the constitution.
It's it's a good sign I I think the administration has way overstepped the bounds here and I think they're they're gonna have to retreat.
You that you mentioned governor though it -- that there is a way to distinguish what you did in Massachusetts with.
Your health care plan what they -- administration has been doing NASA only two events and this issue.
Is key there do you think.
That this is actually giving you a chance.
-- or now.
Well there's always an effort on the part of some to it to confuse at this track -- obscure.
The legislation in our state.
-- related to providing contraception and sterilization those kinds of things and insurance occurred before I was governor.
And my effort as governor was to try and remove those things I I was unsuccessful in removing them my legislature was 85% Democrat.
But but the White House can't point to to my record because that this occurred before I became governor and my effort was to get it out of the legislation.
But he -- -- come back and say well you know.
That if he ended up with a reform effort that was.
Just a mini version of what we did nationally including this to some onerous provisions.
And and I could just point out -- out.
I fought on every basis I possibly could for life and for religious religious tolerance and liberty.
And sometimes I could win those battles and a legislature that was 85% Democrat.
This is a president who is promoting.
The very things I was fighting against.
So he could try and draw the parallel but I can -- my area my distinction which is I fought against the very things this president is trying to do.
I've fought successfully in some cases.
But it each case I fought for religious liberty.
And for the the respective of individuals making their own choices.
There was another financial headline today -- series premiere this mortgage released rework program it comes to about 25 billion dollars.
The idea is to get at least a million homeowners -- underwater right now.
To -- refinance there's there's a simplistic terms here.
-- but again 25 billion dollars for a lot of months to maybe at best slot 25000.
Dollars -- their principal what do you think of the plan.
And what you know and it.
Well you know we haven't seen the details on the plan and what I don't want to have his say a bailout for banks.
-- they had anyway have a crushing institutions that invested in various forms of mortgages saw what a look at the particulars here.
I I would love to see greater flexibility.
Exercised by banks in renegotiating loans with homeowners where that's in the best interest of the lending institution and the homeowner and I see that a lot.
I -- circumstances where.
You've got a couple -- one or two of them are both working.
They can't afford the current mortgage or because there either wages have gone down but they -- or they may have seen a layoff.
But they can't afford payments I want banks to be able to be willing to renegotiated terms that help the bank and and help the homeowners.
In many respects what's happened what Dodd-Frank.
Has so frightened the banking community.
That they're just holding holding off on -- negotiations which otherwise would help homeowner homeowners that the best way to get people help on their mortgage is to get her to Dodd-Frank.
And -- bankers go back to renegotiating in many cases loans that don't need to go into foreclosure.
I'm so you -- no more encouraged that this initiative will fare any better.
So another mortgage -- programs -- -- and service.
Well if that is so far that the programs in the past haven't worked terribly well and I think like cash for clunkers did did terribly and it worked terribly well.
So you have this effort on the part of the president it.
Did to show that he's -- doing something.
But in the final analysis nothing really happens homeowners are helped in the housing market continues to decline.
And and and -- I mean I I don't wanna prejudged this without looking at the particulars but based on the president's track record so far I'm not terribly confident this is gonna help much.
I'm a governor after you're defeats again these are non binding our state -- the Colorado Missouri Minnesota sweet for senator santorum's.
Has put renewed attention and pressure on states up -- now we might not a focused on on the -- of this month.
-- Michigan and Arizona and Michigan -- Rick Santorum is is working very hard to may be surprised.
And win and you're -- hometown.
Aren't you -- speech originally scheduled for Detroit.
-- to -- Tony forth they've moved it to Ford Field.
On to deal with the sellout crowds that in this case -- wouldn't you know laurel accounted for less than two hours.
Do you think you could pull this out is it important.
If for no other reason then it's your own terms that you win Michigan.
Well I'd like to win Arizona and Michigan because of course a lot of delegates at stake in both states.
And I'll be campaigning hard to it to win in those states.
I can't make a prediction as to what will happen.
Last time I won but I think -- won by the two point facility -- was pretty darn close.
And and so like I'm not expecting that a landslide -- I don't I can't play a 100% but I'll win but I.
I'm planning out of I'm gonna work hard for it and I think the people -- Michigan understand that.
This is a chance to select us as our nominee a person who was born and raised at Michigan who understands Michigan values.
And it will do everything in his power to get Michigan working again it's beginning to show signs of progress but there's a lot more we need you to do to get Detroit and Michigan on track again.
But are you worried -- even to people who don't like your great deal agenda -- supported you for years ago said us what happened a couple of days ago was a signal.
Saying about you.
