We have breaking news this morning in this huge contraception battle that has been the story of the week.
Is -- White House about to give -- to the Catholic Church we do not know yet but we do know that they are set to announce it quote a commendation.
On all of this we're still waiting to find out what time the president will come -- speak about that -- we find out we will -- -- now meanwhile vice president Joseph Biden hinted.
That's something it was rumbling with this in an interview on the radio yesterday let's have.
There is a lot of misunderstanding -- -- not enough focus on the fact that we've decided that there's a year to work this out so we can accommodate it.
And what it comes -- to -- and -- do questions related to basically Catholic hospitals and and providing insurance.
-- home and so I am I am not I'm determined.
Two seats this gets worked out and and I believe we can work it out but the frustration.
-- cardinal designate -- frustration Israel.
And China by Bradley -- former deputy assistant to president George W.
Bush and tell icon is a community organizer Annie Fox News contributor welcome to both -- you.
-- you know it that the politics of this have clearly gotten a lot of attention at the White House.
Joseph Biden reportedly and bill Daley as well.
The former chief of staff we might point out really tried to urge the president according to reports not to go this way and the word is that -- women in the White House.
We're very adamant that the president do this so it's not a zips out and I want to start with you on it's it's not as if this sort of found their lap as was sort of the initial reporting on this that they didn't realize that this was going to be such a big deal they knew it was going to be a big deal.
Well -- -- they -- and certainly the president should have although to be honest he has a disappointing record.
By the amount of controversy that seems to follow him and his presidency.
Look it is great in our country that Catholics provides so many valuable public services across the United States.
And part of that is.
You know when you get into the business of providing health care in communities where there is no other alternative in the Catholic hospital when -- providing insurance for employees.
You have to also abide by our democratically created laws that's what we do in this country.
And to be very clear what all the administration is doing here is minor extension two rulings and court rulings that have already been in place since 2000.
Give us Sally they have by may you know and that I don't know -- -- that the Catholic churches in any business.
You know is a nonprofit organizations -- just to make that clear well I -- also the people who work in this institutions now.
Don't receive this coverage -- this is not -- as being taken away from anybody they they work at those institutions knowing that that's not part of -- -- here right.
Martha let's look specifically at first -- -- be there is an exemption for religious institutions -- -- primary religious purpose of churches would not be forced to provide contraception.
This is a very narrow ruling again it only narrowly -- laws that are already in place that says if you are a an institution that yes has a religious.
A religious bent to it but whose primary purpose is not -- were talking universities were talking hospitals primarily.
And you provide pharmaceutical coverage to your employees.
You have to also provide contraception and I -- enough just to be well but DePaul University largest Catholic university in the country here's -- -- and it added contraception covered.
-- Politically how dangerous is this what do you make so far we don't know what the White House is gonna say this accommodation -- -- it's gonna help Arnott to a.
It has to it has to -- Taking on a super -- if there ever was one it's the Catholic Church -- well funded.
They're well organized every Sunday they have millions of people to preach to -- to give advice to.
And not only that but they vote.
Yeah I think -- the White House again made a major blunder like they have on Solyndra like they have on.
I'm so many issues that affect an election.
Like keystone pipeline and and these decisions are gonna come back -- -- economic prediction.
Just like they did under health care.
They what -- they do when they're back was up against the wall they granted waivers I believe waivers going to be given to religious institutions to get there have this -- but I think the damage has already been done.
You know what Ed just of -- last -- I'm gonna get a quick thought from both of you on this it seems to me you know the argument is that well so many Catholic women.
Use contraception but it almost strikes me as a kind of argument where you know I can pick up my family I can say something about Mike -- that I don't like but if you do it.
We're all gonna get together regardless of our own infighting and I think that's the way this this -- comes out how Catholics have galvanized.
Are around this issue quick -- on that Sally.
And then from well you're right 96% of reproductive aged Catholic women have used -- it contraception and like having access to.
But this is actually an issue about when we allow religious freedom.
To trump are done democratically -- laws and you know I would ask would we allow show real law to trump.
Laws that our congress that are voters elected congress to pass no we probably -- and why should we hear bad.
We should here because -- there is a separation between church and state.
And on this issue it's -- a direct assault against the constitutional freedom of people to practice their religion.
Nobody should be telling the Catholic Church how to run their church in principle -- practice that's not what the founding fathers intended and that's why I think this is going to be accommodated this debate.
Fascinates me and we're gonna see how plays out and get some more on it today when the president comes forward and says exactly what that combination gonna look like -- com thank you so much Bradley went great to see you as --
