From independence to the conservatives.
And -- to Barnes who is joining us at feedback.
Get what you can push James -- out of the -- -- That drive -- recalling their occupiers on the way you have to battle out of here.
You know it's it's the I had.
It's very interesting -- -- one of the we just a few moments yard from Rick Santorum had a huge huge response from this audience here.
And of course later on today we're going to be incremental Romney yeah.
He's a very interested to see how the audience is going to respond to him.
We've been hearing some rumblings in the hallways and perhaps he may not receive a rousing welcome here -- -- packages think.
-- new book is called dispatches from bitter America.
And there it is up on the screen and your -- as -- mentioned in the -- Todd speaks to the the culture war that.
Continues to rage in certain parts of this country.
-- felt by by -- a large number of people out there.
And I thought if I may your timing is excellent here Todd because once again -- -- these social issues.
Are front and center after.
They Planned Parenthood Susan G.
Fiasco and now.
The hubbub over the president's.
Rules part of the of the health care plan.
Thought he seems like your timing is is spot on as far as the fact that these issues are now really being talked about once again.
I don't live publishers -- very happy that we had a car and -- you to magic -- there who -- That -- culture war issues we're going to be at the forefront at the center of this presidential race and they certainly are.
You know via the sub title of my book is like a culture war stories from -- -- -- -- -- -- some -- -- Baptist and I got to tell -- something -- here and there are a lot of people that are -- Americans.
-- -- because they're angry at the at the direction President Obama has gone in over the past three years.
These people believe that to get back to to the greatness of this country we have to go back to those and those foundational things those things that made America great.
We're talking about god country and family that.
Of these people who call themselves -- these people that -- spoken to around the country.
What is -- -- candidate that they really feel is most speaking.
To their concerns is -- someone like -- Rick Santorum.
We've been talking about this morning news is enjoying.
A bit of the surge in the polls here.
Absolutely and I have some coffee with a group of young Republicans from Kansas yesterday who tell me they're very.
Very concerned about about this this political field right now the -- candidates.
They're not all that overwhelmed with the -- I've heard I've heard those rumblings in the hallways here at C -- I would say that Rick Santorum -- certainly is sides getting a lot of attention here.
-- interest to see how Newt Gingrich is going to duke.
But again it and then Mitt Romney he's going to have to really make the connection here really make an impact I'm not quite sure he's gonna be able to do the -- this weekend.
We're getting some questions from the chat room and I should mention I finally got myself.
Lot the end I was having a little bit in the technical problem Todd I'm sure you can.
Relate to that when it comes to technology autographs all for jury is asking you Todd if you run into any Democrats and Deepak anybody out there.
Who might not consider themselves to be a conservative.
Republican but may be an independent or Democrat who's there.
Because they're unhappy with the President Obama they don't like their choice and maybe they'd come to -- -- back to hear about some other options out there anybody like that.
And no not at all but -- but it's an interesting question because I did meet someone on the way over to -- -- My taxi cab driver who's an immigrant from Somali -- voted for President Obama back in 2008.
Now he's having to work 1213 hours a day just to put food on the table -- -- and for me and he tells me.
He's not vote for President Obama he actually wanted to come to see pact to see who he might vote for all the Republican side of things.
Well that's I mean that's a good question because and I think it's a good point because you hear so much about.
And -- been so many polls about dissatisfaction amongst Republicans with the GOP field.
But right I wonder about polls that ask Democrats how satisfied they are win their choice and whether or not President Obama might find.
Those numbers you know not not really strong in his -- Well look -- you know again that is a great point because we have seen a number of Democrats voted in in in the house and the senate.
-- you -- go against the president on this this contraceptive rule that says generating all sorts of a controversy not really a firestorm of controversy.
So I wouldn't be surprised if we see some Democrats especially those blue dogs those moderate Democrats break from the president.
Especially if he holds nearly fifty holds to this idea that they're going to force a Catholic Church should do something that goes against their basic cuts tenants of their -- Talbot got some other questions coming in this one is from Regan.
-- attack who is wondering if anybody at C -- has been talking about the ethics investigation.
That has been opened to look into possible insider trading.
By senator baucus.
This is something that.
That that some people are talking about now considering his role he's a he's a congressman.
Reading just to correct you there are some people are talking about this in light of his very important role overseeing.
Banking and finance.
That he's now being investigated in this of course comes.
-- -- they delete that this was that the investigation was it was open.
Comes on the same day that the house passes.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Mark you know oddly enough that they are not Rick this is almost sort of like the super bowl of conservative politics.
So most of the emphasis most of -- -- been all these on the on these four candidates and what they're going to say here.
And also a couple of other things they're doing a straw poll so all -- that for the past couple of days folks have been voting we're gonna know the results of that straw poll.
By the way Rick Sarah Palin is going to be here -- and she's sort of like a rock star especially Monday the younger conservatives that are here and when I say younger conservatives I would say just about everybody here because very very young crowd.
Here in Washington for this event.
-- And but as far as Sarah Palin or someone else.
Getting into the race at this point we mentioned the polls about Republicans dissatisfied with the field.
Is there any chance that someone who is not yet announced.
That they're running could get in -- that this looking this late stage.
Well you know I was I was talking to Governor Palin a couple of weeks ago and she said that -- it wouldn't it would not surprise her if someone got into the race that's -- maybe sometime in April may.
Now some folks have been speculating perhaps it was you are great colleague Governor Huckabee.
But but I you know in the in the governor's downplayed all sorts of all sorts of those rumors.
So that the question ebitda does not there's not a Sarah Palin and there's not a Mike Huckabee.
Who would it possibly be and who could come into the race at this late date.
With enough money with enough star power to jump right in -- be as strong competitor against a Mitt Romney and his millions and millions of dollars -- -- Mitt Romney comment or question from a -- USA in the chat room for you Todd.
Talking about governor Romney's appearance at C -- Mentioning that he was considered to be the conservative.
When he was challenging John McCain for the nominated GOP nomination.
Four years or so ago.
She -- to know what we learned about governor Romney since then that changes.
His conservative status how is it that people could be calling him a liberal and now.
We haven't learned anything -- and thanks for that thanks for that that comment.
Well look correct when we ended the Romney's handlers are keeping a very.
-- bubble around their candidates that's been the complaint from a number of reporters have been traveling with him.
That's he hasn't he hasn't really let down that -- let down that guard so that the reporters can actually.
Get an idea -- who he really is and and what makes him tick.
My concern with Mitt Romney goes back to New Hampshire -- a state senator Graham -- to -- -- -- -- -- said that electability.
-- belief and principle.
That scares a lot of conservative Republican voters especially.
Those social on those social war issues.
So that is why I think that he's having just a hard time connecting with the with -- conservatives.
And and that could lead to a tepid response here when he shows up at at -- -- Doug -- as the host of Fox News and commentary.
You can find him on Twitter at times gardens and his book is called dispatches.
From bitter America.
The number one hot book on Amazon.com.
Right now I was reading -- -- Congratulations on that best of luck with the book and thanks for talking to us and great thanks -- lot -- believe it or not we had a great book signing here seat back and we sold out -- out of the -- excellent I'm happy for you given up my friend.
Thanks so much.
