And brand new information concerning Iran the state run television there reporting that Iran is now using new.
Centrifuges and producing its own nuclear fuel -- all of this stoking fears Iran is getting even closer.
To building nuclear weapons Michael saying is managing director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy -- Michael it's it's Wednesday.
The day after Valentine's Day -- -- remarkable for all intents and purposes this it was a why today why are we getting this announcement today of all dates.
But the united as we've talked about before Iran is under tremendous pressure right now -- currency has has just fallen through the floor.
They're having a hard time selling their oil they're having a hard time importing food.
And so there really are feeling the pinch and I think this is part of Iran's response there's they're telling us that.
They're not gonna back down in the face of pressure that they're going to respond to pressure with pressure of their own.
And they're making this announcement frankly it's probably not true I would sort look at a very skeptically.
As IAEA inspectors -- IEA officials are set to come to Iran next week.
And we're also of course of the same time seeing these bombings in Thailand and in Georgia.
And in New Delhi and I think all this is part of Iran's response -- western pressure.
So -- we do about it I mean not only the fact they were getting these announcements obviously they're proceeding with their nuclear program and now they could be.
And waging these these terrorist attacks in different countries including maybe our own potentially -- -- so what do we do about it.
Well clearly generally need to remain vigilant against the possibility of terrorist attacks luckily many of those have been disrupted as we've seen in recent days and as we saw last year with the plot in Washington DC.
I'm but I think we need to send a message to Iran that the pressure is not going to stop.
You know Iranians tend to think that so we in the west are sort of weak or soft and that if they push back a little bit.
That they can get us to stop the pressure or that if they engages in negotiations.
That will suddenly be distracted -- that -- be a delaying tactic for them I think the message they need to get loud and clear is that.
This is going to continue and that it may even call to culminate military force against them.
How do we send a message.
That that military force is coming.
Because they're seeing severe reports from both sides you know whether it's here at home and overseas that the -- -- ends kind of shrugged when they hear military force and think yep.
They're not gonna do it.
Well I think that's right it needs to be credible and that is part of that is simply being consistent and firm in the statements are you making.
And so if the president says it all options are on the table.
He needs to make sure that his senior officials are saying the same thing that they're not publicly undermining that as we've seen the secretary defense do.
Or that they're not been publicly undermining that -- -- respected the Israeli military option.
And then we need to take actions -- which reinforce it in the gulf -- military posture in the gulf the types of exercises were holding the types of deployments that we have the gulf.
Are very important and we've seen that -- watches those very very carefully it.
In -- a final thought here Michael.
Let's say we end up in talks again with Iran as as they are expected over the next couple weeks and they say okay we're not gonna move forward with our nuclear capabilities.
But what exactly do we expect from them do we ever expect that they're not going to be state sponsor of terror what.
What exactly do we want from Iran are we looking for complete reform there.
What how how does that ever -- going to be a reality.
Well you didn't do very hypothetical area but I think the number one item on the agenda is the nuclear program -- international demands are clear they would need to stop there Richmond they need to stop.
So Tony -- re processing.
And you need to see very extensive -- intrusive inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities.
And I think if we're ever gonna get to the point of a better relationships in the United States Enron there are a lot of other issues which need to be addressed including state sponsorship terrorism.
It could be a long time line for that and the question is is that always the timeline here Michael thank you so much -- nice to have you.
But furniture in Iraq.
