21.
Million American dollars that's the combined to fund raising of the Republican candidates in January according to release his last night from the campaigns.
This is power play welcome back an Internet 21 million dollar sounds like a lot of money sounds like even more money when you consider the fact that super pacs backing these various campaigns.
Have raised.
Double that perhaps we're not sure of the big total numbers but huge fundraising.
And when you add in the Republican National Committee the Republicans -- we're talking probably more than sixty million dollars in fundraising and one -- Should be good news.
For the red team but they are spending an awful lot of it burning each other's houses down so let's talk about how money is affecting the race.
How things are different this year and don't -- to do so.
-- with are -- guest Brad and chuck.
Red and blue.
OK guys so a -- let's start with you so.
On the one hand it's good news Republicans in that that is a lot more money it's basically -- at parity in total monies raised.
Compared to the president the DNC.
And president Obama's super -- So there's parity there which demonstrates enthusiasm on the right yea but boy they -- spending it in some very vicious stuff.
We are look -- the good news is we're raising money the bad news is we're spending it.
That the bad news for Republicans is the Democrats are making it.
And they're gonna have ton of money.
When we finally settle on -- candidate and we're gonna still have to be raising money in order to mount the kind of defense that we're gonna need to knock off an incumbent president so.
-- we're spending money but are we spending it wisely right now.
Some say yes others to say that we need to select somebody so that we can get our house in order well the good news is we are raising money and the money is coming -- The money is coming in but let's look at what it's being spent on very quickly and the latest -- from Ron Paul and it is a blister over.
-- do serious fiscal conservatives.
Santorum voted.
-- size of the Department of Education.
Supported the biggest entitlement expansions of the sixties.
Santorum voted to send -- North Korea.
-- even out.
A few million bucks from Rick Santorum a fiscal conservative.
-- So -- -- gets sends this Ron Paul not a super huge fan of.
Rick Santorum there not not not feeling the love.
That two breads point.
-- you -- side.
And you -- -- -- work with labor unions are.
There is not just assuming facts not just the president not just the DNC.
But labor unions are are or.
Cooling millions of dollars that they're getting ready to put on swing states we -- -- taste -- it.
Down in Florida when I think it was AFL CIO -- can't remember who tweaked Mitt Romney they just threw million dollars that just said by the way Mitt Romney works here and we're going to be dogging you.
I think you're pretty happy about the.
The state of affairs and they can continue to kill each other all day long and I'm going to be on the satellite -- that most of us will be but I think that there's a larger narrative here if you -- at the numbers are released most of the -- -- raise relatively around the same amount of money knowing that.
Romney has a lot more of rich people around him giving him -- have been in the range and we should say in the range Ron Paul is about four and a half million dollars and -- I -- saying he would high and the high end with probably about 63 of between six and -- -- -- so anybody who don't presidential politics.
In the years before -- this time the money would automatically have called somebody right right when I ran with the group of people Dick Gephardt -- and a multi candidate primary in Iowa in 04.
When he was expected to win Iowa we knew the money would be if we didn't win Iowa right he loses -- we drop out of the race that we can have a super pact that would be there or which individual that's how Citizens United has changed the landscape emblematic changed the landscape even for the -- for the Republicans at a when a Santorum or Gingrich might have fallen and -- out -- money and I'd be more to go forward they had some people behind him -- kept them going you know any of the year.
They would have -- -- we should point out and something that bet I'm not stickler on and we've talked about this here the Citizens United case.
Which was -- court decision that president chided -- justices in person for that it has been a talking point.
That didn't allow the super -- business Citizens United case didn't allow that you backs what it did was said.
That interest groups at this advocacy groups corporations and labor unions.
Could spend unlimited sums up to date these super -- of -- I've always been around but now that there's more noise out there in there and people have gotten used to them to the process.
People like -- -- team.
-- adult sentences him and -- -- Scott Foster freeze.
Comedian fostered a breeze through as they have become much more open for about doing what was already legal.
You know what I find interesting Brad.
Is if -- these Smart money would have said if you pardon upon the Smart money would have said always -- -- -- doesn't win section show.
The money goes away -- -- -- doesn't win such as in addition to these super -- re talking about tens of millions of dollars from well heeled donors.
You also have but.
I would've never projected that you would have had 21 million dollars as chuck points out almost evenly divided across the field.
Who would've thought that you would have the money so divided at this point because to -- point in the past.
There was a flight to safety by money and whoever look like they were the front runner got all the money.
Well the super -- have become the safety net -- for candidates -- -- -- -- super -- -- -- with money emboldens the small donor.
To feel that there's something they are there yet and it keeps the game going.
But I will say this I -- you're saying that the super back just to clarify you're saying that the -- back.
Creates noise and reaction around these campaigns salute then helps them raise hard not exactly and I have an article by the way.
Way to go on news next dot com Brokeback that I can't.
-- finance reformers say that super pacs or pox on both houses.
-- that if it's super pacs can spend more money and have more influence than the Kennedys themselves they become very dangerous.
And I think legislation is going to be needed after this cycle -- -- -- presidential race.
But -- in house and senate races as well we're gonna see super -- committee and maybe have undue influence.
Or the campaigns themselves which I happen to believe as -- -- the president.
-- said.
It would his campaign said earlier this month.
It's okay it's cool toward democratic donors to go ahead and give money to his super packed it's run by his former spokesman Bill Burton and what they're saying they they said we're not gonna fight one hander Brian if the Republicans are -- to back.
Until we can get the law change we have to have a super -- That was the president's position.
-- they only -- 56000 dollars in January they the in the Romney campaign chuckles that they're super -- out raise them by six point six million dollars.
Is this a problem for the president look.
We start -- by saying the things that we can commonly agree on is that we all of America the other thing we can all agree on today here anyway and that I agree with my brother about these super pacs.
And I believe no matter I think it's bad for our democracy as a whole I think these men or women should be other proved himself put their message out and -- it's something that electric believes -- they will invest in that.
And then they can go to successful campaign.
To do to the super packed in the in the him in the democratic world I think that the money's gonna come in I think it is coming -- slower I think a lot of Democrats are sitting back watching these guys they're each other up and then they're gonna have a nominee and it's much easier to -- a check when you know who the enemy is the other than that -- last super -- operate out of these.
Right and right now there is no need the democratic side -- is -- need the money -- -- let's be -- a guy like Detroit can't I started to sit back when it wasn't sexy little hole okay.
I ended anyhow I've renamed electrical -- the -- -- -- was one of those Citizens Bank -- years ago that Superman but that's right -- we gotta go guys we appreciate your time I want to close with the this segment with the word from the king of politics is -- -- back putting money in the peoples gas tanks that they're asking you to contribute.
Yes you're right when times are tight it's harder to get people to cough up the -- -- and we thank you very much for being with us today most astute observations.
