Well it's been almost forty years since Billie Jean King famously won the battle of the sexes defeating.
Male tennis player Bobby Riggs in a nationally televised match back in 1973.
But now -- tennis legend is part of a new fight against Republicans.
King is lending her star power to a democratic campaign that accuses Republicans.
Of waging a war on women's rights.
In an email she's encouraging people to go online and stop.
The Republican war on women that's how she puts it to sign that petition.
But is -- a war on women or is this a case of fundraising on women.
Monica Crowley is a radio talk show host Sally -- as a political commentator and both are Fox News contributors.
You're a Republican and a woman -- -- I myself.
Am not a -- nor is the Republican Party ignores the conservative Republicans hate women.
This is the theme now coming out of the -- the -- Look it's understandable because the left is really the Democrat party is really averaged a lot -- is 2008 the 2010 election cycle.
We saw a lot of women leave the Democrats vote for the Republican Party.
So this is their attempt to try to get women back and this is why the whole contraception issue came up.
This is why team Obama drop this like a grenade into the middle of the presidential election campaign.
Remember -- a year and a half a -- Cuba's past year and a half ago.
Did a year and a half to figure out how they -- gonna deal with these kinds of issues with regard to religious institutions so the reason that they dropped it into the race.
At this particular moment was to get everybody all lead the Republican presidential candidates.
All of the American people all the media chasing after this story like lemmings off the cliff and we all fell for it and here we are talking about it once again.
Birth control contraception nobody cares about.
I yeah.
Yeah I haven't yet -- yeah I mean look I completely and totally disagree with you.
As a woman.
You don't look the issue in 28 states they'd already had a mandate like this that was stronger.
And Republicans didn't make a whisper of a -- -- until.
Also in this election year up until all -- about it OK Monica is -- election year Republicans keep -- to hammer it.
Not because of puts up a government an excuse me it was Republicans and finished the -- amendment saying that.
Any employer of any kind with any religious objection to any kind of health issue.
Including women's health issues can you don't raise a finger and I did I miss it I don't -- -- -- -- You know President Obama -- gonna bring us altogether.
Open.
Change unifying for -- yeah.
Hate women well not first of all it is -- really hard to unite when you're working with a party that says know absolutely everything including tax increases that they wants -- but aside.
You know there's no question here this is an election year and all the polls say that you know.
25% of the Republican of the voters which is the Republican base think there's not a warm and and that -- -- -- which is democratic base.
Think it is a war on one.
This is clearly part of you know firing up your base I get incidentally.
When you have Republicans and conservatives going out there in calling you know women who want to exercise their first amendment rights slots.
I think it just elegant I think they're the ones that do we have to go higher up front and edge still lots I'm not talking about them in terms of not just Senate Leadership.
But look the bigger question is I think what we really should be focusing on -- that middle of the country that 50% of independent voters.
Overwhelmingly they think that Republicans forget the war on women in the Republicans are at war with everyone they think the Republicans are actively.
Sabotaging.
The US economy -- -- -- regarding.
Yeah.
That's you just -- I ask you this because you talked about how you think women have been turning on the Democrats since 2008.
We have a poll.
Looking at Barack Obama's approval rating with meant.
Not that with that was when.
Since the start of the year through march 4 2012.
Barack Obama's overall approval rating is average 45%.
I guess I don't have the full screen but trust -- this sort would -- -- -- The Gallup weekly tracker his approval among men has averaged 41 point seven so he is tracking lower with the man that he is with the women.
Does that suggest to you the Democrats understand he needs to get.
Women on the democratic side -- motivated and that's the.
-- absolutely much he has he has had for a while he's had a pretty serious problem with base and yes that does include women.
And so this whole thing was orchestrated.
To get everybody off of the main subject of the selection which is unemployment and the state of the US economy.
So well everybody is over here talking about contraception which nobody cares about.
We're not talking about the issues that yes to affect men -- effect will that affect every single American and that's exactly what the White House intend Williams got -- -- -- floor if he said yes to something like this last night she didn't quite make that comparison like -- solid distraction.
We had -- -- my guess.
No we don't -- it out for us okay.
I'm I'm going to introduce -- what I don't want anyone to interrupt me.
I have.
A lot of kind of pocket now and -- went out there last night she said it was the first time we heard just sort of go here on what women want.
And she said what women care about is the economy and all they care about the debt they care about the entitlements that's what she said and I'm -- -- thing about on the flat.
I reject the idea that this is something that this is what Democrats might be talking about the truth is the economy is getting better talk to any Republican strategist off camera economy's getting better.
Obama's approval ratings getting better they're still highly likable especially in this economy and oh yeah you can't beat somebody with nobody and the Republicans have yet to find a nominee that they all can agree that they like.
So.
-- unconscious just think -- Democrat didn't invent this war on women you have to have some content to put into the story.
And Republicans like Santorum have been drumming up the -- conservative doesn't think and so they don't want to want to -- Stratford.
Talking about getting I was talking about this until team Obama dropped the HHS Nancy I'm Catholic universities and they did that quite deliberately so that everybody would be talking about -- god I feel like we should have done this segment about the four little pink combat helmets -- But yeah I think you love so much you -- as an annoyance and or.
