Fourteen minutes after the top of the hour Republican hopeful Mitt Romney focusing on the south today with key contest.
In Mississippi and Alabama tomorrow.
And presidential candidate former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney joins me now on the road.
From the whistle stop in Mobile, Alabama the whistle stop what's that.
Well -- -- say a restaurant here with a train motif that a lot of people jammed in this little place this morning a lot of people.
Outside getting ready to be arraigned on.
Now did they had a birthday cake for you because -- -- Yeah thank you so much -- -- a happy birthday on the road and I'm hoping for a real big present tomorrow from Alabama I just should.
-- -- -- the day before but some pundits are saying that you could be inching up in these races.
Well that mean for you -- could win one of these two states are -- I'll be fabulous -- course that this is all about delegates at this stage where we're putting together as many delegates as we can't we've got a good solid lead.
I've got by far the most most votes among Republicans so far so we're hoping to be able to get the get the nomination at some point and go on and replace Barack Obama.
I don't know if you.
That was on yesterday amid a paraphrase a little bit but here's what he said about you.
Someone who's outspent ten to one who has the establishment behind him.
Had the wind at his back yet he can't close the deal.
He's talking about you governor Romney how do you respond to senator Santorum.
Well we're closing the deal.
State by state delegate by delegate.
I guess 22 and a half times as many delegates as he has about the same number of state advantages that he has many more Republican voters that he has.
And by the way we're -- we're pretty pleased with the progress we're making and you know that's the nature of the of the process here as you know delegates are awarded proportionally.
But likens the process but we're winning this and I expect that we're gonna get the nomination and you know he's a -- guy but.
Look -- in politics got to get out there and battle and that's exactly what we're doing.
Well Newt Gingrich continues to battle the both of you.
He took aim at you yesterday and called you the weakest candidate in some time -- events.
The most he's gonna get in Mississippi and Alabama is probably a third and is more likely to get 25 or 28%.
Yes he's a front runner he's not a very strong front run -- almost all conservatives are opposed to him which is the base of the party.
So how do you respond to mr.
You know it's funny listen to these guys that they're saying what they wish for the case but happens not to be the case.
Don't forget Florida.
The event at many of the states these are places where conservatives were asked after the race that they vote for and I want to Mattingly and in those states among conservatives.
And you know -- if I'm weak front runner what does that make Newt Gingrich because well ahead of him so much.
-- -- I don't I don't begrudge -- the fact that they're out there campaigning and working -- and getting some support.
But ultimately I believe I'm gonna become the nominee and the reason is.
We want to have someone who can actually beat Barack Obama both Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum spent their life in Washington.
And if people think you just need to have the same people go back in different chairs and fix that place I think they're wrong they want someone from outside Washington to go fix it I'm going to.
Last week -- here.
Santorum and Gingrich could not win this race.
Even though you are not near the 1144 delegates that you need.
Independently they cannot.
But governor what happens if Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich decide to go at this thing together one of them drops out and now there's only.
One candidate going up against Mitt Romney.
Is it still a mathematical impossibility.
Oh I don't think it's mathematically impossible at this stage anything is possible -- politics even the the F impossible.
But I do believe that if if the two of them more to are one of the two of them were to decide not to run.
I would get some other support the other guy would get some of the support.
I'd expect to go to still go want to get the nomination because it is you're sitting across the party.
People who know what's best people -- worked with the speaker people have worked with senator Santorum.
People who know what's best have lined up behind me.
And that's that's an encouraging sign it -- hopefully give people confidence that you have to people who know you best.
Are the ones you get behind -- -- -- and that's a good -- if people who know you best don't support you.
That -- -- tell -- something.
Ultimately the three of you are hoping that one of -- beats Barack Obama in November yesterday his former spokesperson Robert Gibbs.
Seem to be touting.
The economy as a strong point now for President Obama listen -- this.
The biggest issues are going to be economic issues I think you.
You saw a good economic jobs report on Friday we took another.
Important step in a long road to recovery I don't think it's gonna be a referendum I think it's going to be a choice Bob we're gonna.
Have a choice in this likes about whether we're gonna continue positive job growth we're gonna go back to the policies.
Of cutting taxes for the wealthy and ignoring the middle class meaning of the issues.
So is -- having it both ways governor Romney when the economy ticks up slightly.
Now it's a positive thing to run on for President Obama.
But if it's not doing well it's still to blame President Bush.
It's really had a -- pretty sad that Telus and that I know they're gonna do their spending as best as they possibly can.
But you've had 37 straight months with unemployment above 8%.
And that was the -- the level they said they wouldn't exceed it and they've been up above it for 37 straight months.
This president has failed the American people we've had far too many people out of work for too long of course the economy is gonna come back recessions don't go on forever.
But what this president has done has undoubtedly.
Made the recession deeper.
-- it has made it more difficult for the recession to riveted to come out of the recession.
We've seen gas prices double the American people are not happy obamacare -- not happy with they want to get rid of it they recognize this president has not help this economy.
He is part of the reason it's been so long for this economy to get back on its feet.
All right thank governor Mitt Romney have a fantastic day down in the south they're somebody's gonna -- -- a really good southern cake I just have a feeling.
At Hubert thank.
Thanks so much -- -- to -- with.
