Did you join me in welcoming.
Senator Rick Santorum.
Rick Santorum is back in one of the states that made -- a contender -- the former Pennsylvania senator is campaigning in Missouri where he -- a non binding primary here last month.
Today Missouri Republicans are holding caucuses that will help determine delegates to their convention rival Mitt Romney is in Puerto Rico ahead of its primary tomorrow.
Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are taking the day off from the campaign trail.
The latest -- -- -- shows that Romney leaves the would be presidential pack with 38%.
Santorum is close behind at 32% followed by Gingrich and -- Look we're not gonna go to a brokered convention.
We're we're now where you want one or the other of us among the three or four that are running his gonna get the the delegates necessary to become the nominee.
As it gets closer towards the end it's gonna be clear we've got.
Someone who's in the strong lead that states that remain will vote for that person and that person will get -- we'll get the delegates to become -- nominee.
But some political observers don't agree with governor Romney was no breakaway front runner in the GOP race political strategists are beginning to seriously contemplate.
What -- brokered convention may look like.
Former 2008 presidential candidate and current Fox News host and political analyst governor Mike Huckabee is joining us now for some thoughts on this.
Thanks so much for being with us here today governor great to have you here.
Thank you Obama and on tell you what a brokered convention is gonna look like if you've ever seen a train wreck.
That's what it's gonna look like it would be a disaster for the Republican Party trying to go into the fall election.
Well you know -- -- Fox News poll is showing that a majority of GOP voters say this campaign season is hurting the Republican Party 56% say it's dividing and weakening the party.
So to that point do you agree that would happen.
Well I think -- -- largely not because the process is taking so long it's the nature of it.
It's the fact that the Republican candidates are spending most of their time savaging each other.
Trying to prove that their opponent is not really -- conservative than proving they are.
Instead of taking a message of not only contrast for -- Obama.
But the Republicans desperately need to to put forth what they're gonna do for America.
If they get the White House people can tell you what Republicans -- against I'm not sure the average person on the street.
Can announce to you what Republicans actually are for.
Now that's something different to consider and some are suggesting that.
Rick Santorum wants to stay in this race all the way to the convention just in case the Romney campaign implode for some reason he wants to be -- go to guy.
Is that reason enough to stay and.
Well it's reason enough to stay in until some money gets 11144.
And I would also say I think even though there's been a lot of pressure on Newt Gingrich to get out that's unfair to Newt Gingrich.
It's possible Rick Santorum could implode our Romney could implode are both of them could implode.
Anything can happen in politics and until somebody has won it.
It's interest thing that the only people pushing for -- to get out of the race other supporters of either Romney -- Rick Santorum.
When -- supporters start telling him to get out -- he's got to think about it I haven't heard that I haven't heard any of his major people.
Go on publicly and say I think it's over for -- he needs to quit.
And so we don't for all the calls for him to get out I'm not sure that it's that that that's an appropriate or timely message -- -- And and this idea to -- of that.
If he gets out that means all those delegates go to Rick Santorum.
We we've just seen polls that show that half of the people who are for Gingrich.
Their second choice is not Santorum it's Romney so -- You know what I -- -- Sarah -- a few weeks ago on the show she said the GOP should not be afraid of a brokered convention as long as it was an open process and that the deal making didn't happen behind closed doors.
Do you agree with that.
Well not completely you know on our I respect your view on that.
I would certainly be entertaining it would be a lot of fun for people to observe it.
If our primary goal is winning the White House in and bringing this country back to its feet off its face.
Then we need a party that is united.
And here's the real disaster that could happen if none of the candidates who spend all this time -- End up being the nominee you really now have a complete.
Breakdown of the system and here's why.
You've got millions of people across America who were heavily invested in one of these three top tier candidates -- Ron Paul and say there's four.
They've they've given money that given time.
And if all of their efforts were basically be to be brushed decided to convention and then let's say will pick.
Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio or Mitch Daniels or whoever.
Then that person has no track on which to run its own train except the party track.
And most of the real activists are going to be very ticked off that they worked awfully hard for a candidate who got brushed aside at the last minute.
Now I can see the fireworks erupting on that one.
And there are also those who say that a brokered convention would -- a bad precedent for the GOP since.
The candidate could essentially skipped many primaries and caucuses and instead wait for a convention to pick.
Him as a nominee.
Well yeah I mean I think anybody who who's ever run for president would tell you that.
If you could just skip all -- the hard work and the grueling twenty hour days and fighting off all the negative attacks from both the press in your opponents.
And just walk in to a coronation.
-- put my name on the list I mean you know that's the that's the whole point.
Is that somebody -- have to earn their way through this process not walk -- and and just be handed.
This you know this this magic mantle in fact I think it would be a detriment to that candidate because it means they haven't been toughened up through the process of the primary.
And that is of value the big reason that this primary has been negative.
In terms of its impact in the general election is not because again of how long it's lasted -- how many.
Days it's gonna take to get a nominee the problem is.
It's been spent mostly with candidates attacking each other and often on a very very personal level and attacking their character and integrity.
And that's gonna come back to bite them in the fall.
But let me ask is at what point though are they gonna start looking at this seriously and take a hard look at what you're saying for example that the longer this goes on like this.
The united shorter chances are launching a really a major campaign against the president in the fall.
Well the -- there's a certain myopia that happens in the middle of the campaign your -- you know in the foxhole we are in the fight you don't really have an opportunity to step back and see.
The full battlefield cause all your thinking about is am I -- live to fight yet another day.
Not -- -- gonna look in August or September October.
You're just look in the state cannot stay on my feet to the end of the week and get enough money and to keep the campaign going so I think all the campaigns right now are looking more short term and long term and that's one of the harsh realities of one of these intense campaigns.
But at some point they've got -- to step back and ask.
How's this gonna look for example if if -- person doesn't win.
He's gonna be expected to step on that convention platform put his arms around the nominee the person he is savaged for the past ten months.
And and smile and look adoring late.
And say this is my guy and boy he's going to be a great president.
And you just been ten months telling a -- guy wouldn't be a good president now it's gotta get up there and with some liable.
Of listens to steer a straight face tell you why is and -- -- the Democrat I'm just gonna say okay which time where you're not telling me the truth if you -- and we telling the truth both ways.
Exactly boy it does raise the bar raise concerns and a big way.
Governor great to see you thank you so much for joining us today.
