That's how many are up for grabs today in Illinois Republican presidential primary.
And this is power plant here we are the big board.
As we explained to you the next big contest as we near the halfway point in the Republican nominating past as Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney.
Get ready to do battle.
In the -- -- the birth places.
Of their party the Republican Party here in Illinois.
Pretty big deal and I remember Illinois huge state lot of people live there.
Not very Republican so it doesn't get as many votes and that the Republican Convention.
As some big states.
But just by virtue of its millions and millions of residents.
Does pretty -- well.
So as we get -- do this couple things remember one you're not if you're in Illinois voter your not really voting for the candidate you -- your voting for a slate of delegates.
People are pledged.
Says the name of the potential delegate you know Joseph -- dots parentheses Santorum.
That's how you know who you're voting for their pledge to that person Rick Santorum did not qualify.
Delegates -- for congressional districts their portion that about three some have for some have Toobin about three.
Per the fourteen congressional districts in the state three of those are in the Chicago area -- -- didn't expect to be well.
One though which is painful is here in the middle part of the state.
That Santorum did not qualify for that's one where he stood a good chance to get three delegates -- Santorum is only competing.
For 42 a 54 delegates.
That are available today.
And more important.
There are twelve more delegates to be had at the state Republican Convention that are awarded -- -- at large delegates to be awarded at the convention winning.
The popular vote even though it's not binding would give somebody a very good argument to get those twelve and that's exactly the number that he didn't qualify for.
All right so let's talk about this let's talk about the five parts.
Illinois and it's easy to look at it this way so it.
There's really two parts -- Chicago and everything else.
Chicago is about 68%.
Of the Chicago ten -- -- make up metro Chicago -- 60% of the State's population.
But it's not quite as important when you get into Republican primary politics only 56%.
Of the statewide total.
Of nearly 900000 votes.
Was in the GOP primary so little more than half.
-- a very big deal so Cook County obviously is a great big deal that's big that's Romney country.
-- like bearing ten towns like Wheeling that are inside -- counting.
Are very significant remember only 22% of Cook -- voted against Barack Obama in the general election in 2008 but that was -- almost half a million votes or John McCain.
So this -- great for.
Mitt Romney is basically this he needs to run up this -- here he needs run up -- -- in this part of the state.
He needs to do really well out the I 88 court or -- page -- -- -- -- page -- we think about it do page canny and these upscale suburbanites is some the very wealthiest precincts.
In America this is like John Hughes movies these are big brick houses these are elm lined street -- very upscale stuff this is good -- stuff.
Kane County maybe a little better for Rick Santorum.
Little bit more down market.
Wayne's world was set in -- -- Illinois.
And that should give you an idea about what's going on out there a lot more office parks.
Shopping malls and stuff like that another great place Romney stuck here in Lake County.
Yes there's some down market stuff there but some very wealthy counties in these.
This side of the Chicago land area the north side and even out here to McHenry county to a certain extent.
Very important for Romney very bit.
But -- hop.
Here's the deal for Rick Santorum.
Could be very good for him and the good news for him and I want to point this out for you.
When -- goes out to get into will county which is right here which is sort of that key shape -- and then that's Joliet.
-- -- That's.
Used to be blues Brothers -- country used to be blue collar rough and tumble but it's one of the fastest growing counties in the country.
It's booming because it's affordable -- -- not that bad into Chicago a lot of young families.
And in the end they tend to reflect it's a lot of the ethic that's there.
They've helped make the -- a little bit more Republican.
Then it was before this is an open primary.
And there could be some Joliet -- inform voters down there.
Tell cutting the Mitt Romney's margin here in the Chicago land area here inside these ten counties and of course south of that unique.
You can -- And that's very blue collar -- industrial not a ton of votes but again the south is such basically north vs south in the Chicago land area.
Romney north central and south and that's sort of the -- -- is for the whole state if you think about it this way.
And let's do this let's just go ahead and I'm gonna just show you how the state gets divvied up so basically have down here a long.
This area the wabash river the embarrass river the little wabash.
Down here this was the first part that European settlers lived in in Illinois these are people who are Scots Irish.
Apple action were always talking about -- hillbilly firewall this is very much part of it is places like.
Matt tune in -- -- Other places this this is should be good Santorum country but it's a danger for him because Newt Gingrich might do -- number there.
He might get in there so then as discussed we have the Chicago land area.
You have the sort of Mississippi north and quad cities.
That is Rock Island this is Moline Rock Island up here and with Davenport.
The quad cities with Iowa.
Heavy industrial heavy manufacturing.
Then you have this part this part is very interest.
You have essentially the suburban Saint Louis part of the state that's like all them.
Belleville used to be east Saint Louis these -- somewhat suburban but they're like ex urban voters they're not in the horror to the Saint Louis area.
These are voters that they might do very well and down in the southern part of the state.
This is -- that they called little Egypt down -- -- row.
These this is coal country this is heavy production Illinois river basin on the Mississippi down here to this point.
Big coal production these folks again.
Formerly a strong democratic area.
Towns like our counties like -- sent.
Used to be strong democratic areas now be should be good Santorum voters so the keys to victory are this front is gonna try to run up the score here.
Santorum should do well here yes read that Gingrich here.
In the central part of the state.
This will be a pretty big deal because you've got spring you've got towns like Springfield.
You've got towns like.
All the way over.
Almost the Indiana border and up to Peoria these folks are a little more moderate.
And might tend to hear from Mitt Romney so.
Just as santorum's gonna try to steal from -- outside -- Chicago.
It's Ron he's -- -- from Santorum a little bit here in this central part of the state in this heartland.
But let's talk about this and this is just almost everything to the race.
So the rock -- River flows essentially divides -- want to go back one more time the rock river essentially divides this part of the states so you're either looking to Chicago or you're looking out here to the quad cities if you live in this northern half of Illinois.
And Rockford Winnebago county.
Here on the rock river has a lot of votes.
It's very Republican.
This whole part west northwestern part of the state traditionally.
Republican this is Ronald Reagan grew up in Dixon Illinois.
This is Republican country but they.
Tended towards -- have tended towards.
There were a more moderate -- these are sort of Gerry Ford Republicans and then as you get all the way over -- -- Whiteside county.
And down to Rock Island county they went for -- in 2008 against McCain so this is a part of the state where Romney in -- former gonna do battled socially conservative.
Lot of Catholic voters lot of people like that but boy you can make and a strong economic argument in a place where people fallen on hard times where this is like John Deere.
Other big manufacturers here so this is going to be really important Santorum wants to win he better do well in Rockford.
He really really really better do well in Winnebago -- And one more look ahead remember Internet we're gonna have a primary in Wisconsin not too far from now and how the two of them run.
Up there and Winnebago county that's gonna tell us a lot to keep -- -- -- Rockford Winnebago county.
