Change gears right now we're gonna talk about.
Some -- -- taking place at the school district in the state of Connecticut.
This is -- school district that is considering changing its dress code that would that would ban certain items of clothing that.
I don't know maybe some some kids you know probably a staple in a lot of people's wardrobes.
The let's talk more about it with Garrett.
-- -- is am -- getting that right Garrett.
That's very good a job -- shot -- is gonna pop culture -- and Erica Garrett it's that are dot com you can find him on Twitter at Garrett.
Under line ETC okay yards to tell this is and and you joining us from Philadelphia this morning we could see it's plastered behind them okay so this is the Connecticut school district what are they thinking about doing.
While they want to ban all types of form fitting clothing because essentially they find them and appropriate so that includes you know.
Tight T shirts -- genes.
And quite frankly I think it's ridiculous because you know fashioned -- -- fashion trends change you know they do what was popular twenty years ago what's popular today.
Aren't going to be the same things and and people are just afraid of things that change people people are just afraid of a difference you know you look back in that eighteen hundreds and it was taboo for a woman to show a little ankle.
And you know we think about that is being ridiculous though so you know -- the you know skinny jeans may be different than -- -- may be different but.
Hundred years from now we're gonna look back on this and think it's probably ridiculous to.
-- let me just play devil's advocate here and let's say for example.
You know I I remember my days in school and it might have been a distraction.
If a pretty girl in my class was wearing something that was especially.
At Ford fitting I guess is the way to put it in maybe the school just wants to try to help kids focus on the work.
Focus on this stuff that they're there to do rather than having their mind wander you know and once you get the seventh -- Ninth grade -- you know you don't even you don't need any excuses to have your mind want to have it.
You know we're you know Rick but the best thing is is that the teachers union is against this -- why so that teachers don't see a problem and the students don't see a problem -- how much of a problem really is that it's the principles that are complaining.
But the principles aren't the one teaching the students the teachers are teaching the students and at the teachers don't see it as a distraction.
Then Bennett you know I mean I would trust their opinion you know.
That the -- is how kids express themselves especially.
Kids in -- -- -- high school of how they express themselves and down.
Fashion is one of the least.
Harmful ways to do it you know it's one the most harmless ways.
It's better than shaving their hatter are getting a tattoo of your boyfriend or girlfriend's name on your back you know it's.
How harmful really are skinny jeans professionals or even wearing slim fitting clothing I mean I'm wearing a tight T shirt but I hardly find this.
Find it harmful you know I think I think I think people just like.
To complain about things that are changing because they like to keep things traditional they do I mean they.
No -- really difficult there -- people who just like they complain period.
I've -- November they have no matter what they do is light to complain wee we wanna put up a stable we reached out to.
To that do this school district are actually a local newspaper the record the record journal reached out.
-- the the meridian Connecticut school district this is this statement from the superintendent there mark the -- who says that.
The administration is not recommending banning any clothing items.
We want to assure that all students -- dressed appropriately for schools we will enforce the rules equitably across.
The district so they just look at this is a matter of -- just dressing appropriately you know and I would say it as as a father that there are times of my kids come down.
-- you know for breakfast and they're dressed for school and I look at what they're wearing and I say well you know.
Go back upstairs that's not appropriate.
Through right and look -- I'm not I'm not saying that there aren't boundaries of course there -- boundaries you don't want.
Of a girl showing up to class and a shoot super short skirt.
And you don't want guys with a button down shirt that's open you can see their chest.
-- -- but to say that a -- T shirt or or it's great article of clothing is it is it is inappropriate I think.
I think that's that's before the -- I don't think that's crossing the boundary.
I think that's just I think that's just kids stressing how they dress in 2012 you know you look at.
All of these British boy bands that are that are coming in are wearing skinny jeans and you look at you look at celebrity fashion and they're not necessarily inappropriate they're just.
It's just things are changing you know when you can expect girls to Wear sweatpants and a baggy sweatshirt to class they're not gonna do it they're gonna rebel.
And another way and if they're gonna if they're going to express their identity better through -- IT shirt then.
-- -- -- -- -- What else is on your radar screen Garrett -- the pop culture commentator.
I'm sure you you you've got your idol on a lot of different things that -- they outside you're at your website Garrett at -- dot com that's what's what's your lead story.
Yeah I well I actually just posted a blog about.
British fans and with how we thought that boy advance we're sort of a thing in the past how but.
You know we use to think of the Backstreet boys and and saying -- we think of those as being parts of the ninety's but.
In reality they're coming back you know we have a lot of fans from one -- and -- -- -- -- -- coming over and it -- -- we have.
But wanted in one direction and then and girls -- going crazy again and you know it's funny you go through phases you go from The Beatles and the beach boys and then you skip over to and saying again.
Ninety degrees then.
Nauert the next phase of a pop music just when he doesn't think something's gone it it picked it comes back what's -- -- -- again -- -- old is new.
And he anything that you see on the horizon as far as upcoming trends.
In the world of pop culture that you that you are -- just seeing.
Right now maybe it's -- overseas you know a lot of times it feels like with night I spent a couple years living in London and working there.
A lot of the things sort of that ended up coming -- United States.
Ended up starting off in in places like London and -- our European cities is there anything that's going on overseas right now.
Cultural pop culture wise that you see making its way to the US.
I'm you know what's funny is that you you bring up a good point Rick that a lot of cultural and she's due -- in Europe and come over to the US but.
But increasingly it seems that America is sort of starting.
A lot of new trends for instance a lot of reality shows.
That America has expanded on and sort of come to franchise are being are being picked up.
In UK for instance there's -- there's a British version of the Jersey Shore and it's funny it's remarkable the characters that they haven't Nelson more that they are to the characters -- the American version of the Jersey Shore has.
So I think reality TV is becoming a lot bigger in your outcome but I wouldn't say that it originated in Europe I think America can -- for better for worse playing very the success of reality television and I think they're following suit you know reality TV is entertaining it's very and inexpensive to produce.
And it brings in greater ratings so you can't blame them for for hopping on the bandwagon.
-- -- -- is the pop culture commentator whose web site.
We showed you -- Garrett at -- dot com you can find him on Twitter at Garrett.
What is nickel and underline what's the word I can't think yeah.
There's underscore her lying what -- -- -- cause and Garret Anderson who are ETC.
Nice to talk to you Garrett all the best and I -- that they can last night like this getting -- years forty years -- your settings and I have felt -- -- enough.
Just gotta gotta step that they ought to thank you should you should try one on it would look good on him all right thank you are given a shot have a -- -- -- -- you fifth.
