About then is it possible for Research in Motion to stage a comeback in light of this stiff competition.
That Blackberry now receives from its competitors in the market the Google Android phones the apple iphone's -- -- to the senior editor at techno buffalo.
And he joins us here's to you received concedes it.
It's just a mess over there are I -- -- certainly looks like -- what's going on yesterday.
I think the biggest problem is was leadership originally.
-- kinds of -- ten weeks ago.
And now he says even -- news executive before he says.
Ought to realize how bad it was because it's I think it's surprised.
Right that they were sort of in dire straights -- -- -- -- CEO you you're privy to.
Probably some information that you might not have been otherwise you're and so he got to look at the books I guess and -- oh boy so.
What are they gonna do are they gonna try it seems that they're gonna try to sort of partner up.
With other companies and maybe change their whole business model.
Well so -- -- that this possible will do joint ventures it's possible that the license patents and I think they'll -- need to eventually but they also so they're gonna refocus on the enterprise.
Which is something that they might not have been focusing on so much recently they sort of tried to get into the consumer market and there are not it is consumers.
But they're gonna try to -- and there's another roots and insecurity -- and they back to emerging markets that's where they're seeing success now.
And they're gonna continue to fight their but they're also gonna face -- -- now with when this Sony Microsoft and of course android phones are committed a budget.
-- -- saying you think about.
For example that the car industry -- at which had so many problems you know recently and it's now -- -- staging a comeback.
But American carmakers wondering if it's possible now for -- company like Research in Motion to sort of you know reinvent its itself reinvent its products in a way that could help -- to compete in this new marketplace because.
You know what blackberries came around originally they were really the only game in town and if you worked for a big company like.
Fox News for example you were issued a work Blackberry and you kept it on -- you know and then as apple came out -- its iPhone and Google came out -- its android and you know these.
You know these these phones have so many more interesting and -- and user friendly capability.
You know I I went out and got myself an iPhone and ally -- -- I still have the Blackberry but I only use it for work I would never choose I would never.
Reach for the Blackberry.
Over the iPhone I had if I had a choice in the matter but.
-- he admitted yesterday on the phone call the earnings call that.
Rim was late to the bring your own device to -- game so a lot of enterprise allow you to bring an iPhone or android device working as matter of fact yesterday.
Music you know it figures that.
Injured an iPhone made up 91% of all device -- in the three months ended February from 91% just 5% were black there.
So what they have to do now is in May show that their new operating system Blackberry -- can really really step it up.
But has -- gets the market seemingly can't just sit around and wait like they have been doing.
And rim I don't know if they're ready to do that.
Well that's some of the criticism that I've been reading in the press is a lot of these analysts and experts are saying that they're just moving too slowly to -- to bring these changes about.
That that's what's really hurting them.
In a marketplace where you know apple updates its products in Google updates its products off you know on a regular basis several times a year.
Exactly by the time they get their next operating system now apple broadly -- ready for Apple's iPhone you know this summer.
-- -- -- IO conference result boot.
Developers are gonna have their next.
Operating system so that everybody is going to be a step ahead.
Again and really yet had it doesn't have an -- a excuse me and because this again so you can go to -- -- devices you can download movies and music and everything like that rim is still trying to build out.
Their platform their application store.
Meanwhile everybody else has hundreds of thousands of applications.
So we're really that you do attract developers and -- -- that's -- we need to figure out.
Because developers are leaving they're not making money when people are buying their applications on Blackberry devices.
Well I'll tell you why I I think it and not that they called and asked me for any advice but.
When I'm typing a work email on my Blackberry and I have to include both.
Words letters and numbers.
I cannot for the life of me especially the number four or the number seven figure out how to press the -- my I don't know whether my thumbs are too big.
You know or what but it is the biggest pain -- -- To try to type on this thing and for awhile when the iPhone first came out that was people's complaint was that they couldn't type.
Now I have such an easier time -- I and people I talked to such an easier time typing on.
Be you know whatever you want to call them the keyboard that apple didn't -- the touch screen keyboard.
Then I do on this actual thing with the buttons that I can't -- the right wants right.
And it's a problem -- you rim has always had a problem with sort of the user experience right they've been focused on security they focused on enterprise.
And they didn't really focus on what consumers want or what people actually want in a phone.
Right right and that's what apple and Microsoft C with Windows Phone if you listen and -- they're trying to give you features that you want.
That you're excited to use -- iPhone -- -- doesn't do that.
Do you see -- trying to get into once again I think they tried to tablet.
They launch something that did not do very well they -- -- look at the playbook which -- came when I don't even know what the story is what happens 200 -- -- 200 dollars and what was it when they launched it.
For -- on it but okay let's look up.
So they don't -- the -- more than 50% and still not selling today try to revamp that is that something that they have to do it seems like everybody.
-- -- recently ousted issued an update -- -- much better as a matter fact that allow you to run.
Google's Android applications on its -- was a problem -- that they have to go to somebody else's market.
The popularly their device with applications that consumers twenties and I think we'll hear more about that may and the new operating system that's running on black -- -- based on that.
Code that's used in the playbook -- It's a it's a fun time must be Clinton -- -- -- -- -- yes you know this is this -- A lot going on in the world of technology.
One of our chatter is -- -- very faithful and dedicated chatter we we appreciate your comments from -- USA.
She says I don't know we we have to -- to weigh in on how Blackberry how.
-- -- -- -- Turn things around the Blackberry honestly seems kind of outdated and limited compared to what Smartphones can do I think if they are to survive they need to increase the usefulness to compete with Smart that's my apps.
-- and that's the user experience right you know and the user experience really is no different whether you're using it for.
Reasons or whether you're using it for for worker for business right -- -- right.
Even if even if you're doing companies stuff you still wanna have a nice experience what we're syndicate where you can't get here has type the numbers that we have to pay attention of those kind of things -- Design books you have that problem too is -- only -- collector had problems goodness I can't.
And I and -- and I -- fox has begun to give out to certain employees iphones.
I've not been able to convince them that I need one.
And then I'd be carrying around to -- it's totally fine as far as as far as I'm concerned.
Tom are there any while we have you here we have a couple of minutes of -- are there any trends anything that's on the horizon stories we're working on.
For -- buffalo that and anyone to sort of -- gives little preview.
We have a huge week next week for new announcements new phones coming out.
-- -- to and there are a lot of great devices that were announced.
In the world congress earlier this year in February.
And those are about to start hitting the market so really exciting couple -- phones.
That operate on Andrew way that operate on most.
We're we're currently -- we can't talk about that right now but they are going to really -- store shelves by storm.
Weeks and this headline real fast that I read about Google now opening up an online store yeah it would have.
Sort of like what apple does -- Apple Store to sell there are there products is that here's the thing they did that originally when they had their first nexus phone.
And it failed and they said we're not gonna do that again.
Some really adjusted to see why they would bring the -- back.
But the reason owners -- saying that they'll have a 200 dollar tablet this summer possibly made by suits and so that'll be -- -- statistics really nice products so what's -- that happened.
Let's use -- and AS US it.
Where -- from.
I want me.
-- hazel to you can read more Todd work in the work of his colleagues -- techno buffalo techno buffalo dot com Todd and senior editor there.
