Mike Wallace retired in 2006 after several decades of running on sixty minutes.
He started in 1939.
Had show on channel five in New York called nine feet.
Was the consummate interviewer journalist who was aggressive.
But one of his epitaph to be known as being tough.
But fair.
On the phone now joining us is the Fox News Channel chairman and founder.
Roger Ailes mr.
Ailes your thoughts this morning on the passing of my -- -- should go in.
Television all over assume.
And do my -- good my opinion it was a bit of a controversial character.
Throughout his career -- one of the toughest interviews but he will always be.
In the pantheon of great actually and television and journalism.
He.
Became a watchword when when people used to joke that he was at sixty minutes and they chased.
You know the -- -- words in the world.
Where Mike Walsh is here and show you know -- guy who has left his mark on the on the business has passed he worked.
Right up until five or six years ago I think.
And I just want to pass on my own.
Thoughts and prayers to give his family Chris Wells of course should those FOX News Sunday for -- you know -- wrote a book.
-- character.
Profiles in presidential.
Courage and I know that he's loved and admired -- other great deal in fact just a week or so ago.
We were talking about them and you know he's just left an indelible mark -- our -- And you know isn't it users were so intelligent so probing.
It was also sensitive and and I guess raji had a sense that it was never cruel.
-- wasn't someone who was it mean and vindictive even if he was throwing that controversial question.
Well he -- he didn't.
Necessarily production easy actually ask intelligent and very tough questions to answer but.
You know many people.
Who weathered Mike -- interview grew to respect him greatly.
And you know have great regard for him because.
I don't recall him ever anybody ever saying to -- he took a cheap shot every.
You know if you did the obvious or that he would just who you know playing some kind of game he actually was.
Trying to serve the audience and that's what they -- great -- -- -- of one of the great course.
What why do you think that's important value and you talk about being a great voice and he started 1939.
And that -- -- show and he was compelling.
To watch.
Yes and -- -- you know he weathered a lot of attention are people forget I think might -- actually sold cigarettes on television before he's back but yeah.
It's acceptable.
A big church -- he -- -- see Lucy he knew our business since sent out.
And he morphed into one of the great journalists of our -- fixed it.
It's sixty minutes -- -- it's starting that you I think in 1968.
At that original team.
Became.
Electronic.
In our business.
And the number one show for many many years at CBS.
Roger just to give folks perspective out there and he's did start so long ago and have such a legendary.
Ron has they would say.
That's very rare in this business to be able to be on television for so long and to log every day of it as he has said again and again.
What do you attribute his ability to do that to continue to be relevant an -- -- staying in probing as Eric said.
But still have a reputation of someone that you'd want to sit down and talk to.
-- should read in the most crucial down the road in airports and would sit around and talk a little bit that he was out there are gone after this story she never.
That power even as he got older I mean he got to play -- did a story.
He was always interest it in the subject he was always curious.
Which makes a great Israel and -- -- things personally he didn't.
Sit around and and hope somebody else is demanding just that he would go get it.
It's hard to imagine interview that he hasn't done is and it.
Well everybody.
In the world that I know -- through the last several decades.
And that the one -- and other types of my quality tests could be.
He is he is just a -- And will always be.
Indian -- -- -- talk further about Chris Welsh Chris doesn't know this but.
My -- great admiration for approximately totally crazy he should you know Chris is -- things they don't have Chris -- Have a general approach to things but he does talk that this is forever in terms of corner after the troops.
And that's one of the reasons we heard in the trucks and -- Europe.
He gives a fair and balanced interview but he keeps coming.
He's he's got the gene pull doesn't -- and our hearts and prayers of course go out to Chris and his family and mr.
Wallace traveling.
And Roger another point -- that you you mentioned.
He was salt content that could confrontational here to the same time he became friends.
With some of the very people that he would sit down and grow and I'm thinking of of this great friendship with Nancy Reagan.
Among others that to some would be surprising what is the ability in what was his ability.
To it you know transcend.
The it's television news journalists -- to become friendly with some of the people a decade ago.
Well I'll play through does secret.
Many many years ago Richard Nixon said to me that.
But goals is located -- -- that's not coming from him -- what that's about some of the terms.
That once Pat Nixon who was very shy and very return it -- like to -- -- the press.
Got trapped in an outdoor spot somewhere against defense in the -- -- journalists from you know sort of shouting questions rather -- everything else.
And she obviously was quite uncomfortable apparently Mike walked through the crowd -- journalists took nobody on boardwalk drought could go out and out of there.
And some other family saw that on television and so they never really dislike.
My big news with Mike -- said.
A man of dignity and decency a role model for assess Roger we thank you so much for joining us this morning on this Easter Sunday.
And of course our hearts and prayers go out to be the Wallace family as -- only member Mike Wallace on the Sunday morning.
