Now 2012 presidential politics with the next primaries more than two weeks away the candidates are reassessing where they go from here.
Joining us now Newt Gingrich mr.
speaker happy Easter welcome back of -- have to be with you let's talk about you a little bit and where you see yourself going here.
You -- reconciled to the likelihood if not the inevitability.
Of Mitt Romney says -- party's nominee.
Well I think you have to be realistic given the size of his organization given the number of primaries he's one he's far and away the most likely Republican nominee.
And if he does get to 11144.
Delegates are supported.
-- they can in this all the helping defeat Obama because of the primary goal of the entire Republican Party has to -- To defeat Barack Obama so what makes this may be the most important election in my life it.
You indicated that one of the reasons you stay in the race.
It is to influence the platform.
A -- poll what do you hope to do -- but I think platforms matter in the long run evolution of a party.
And parties more than just -- presidential candidate senate candidates house candidates.
It's state legislators and went when I go around the country.
The number of people walk up to me and say.
They used to listen to -- -- tapes now the senate minority letter opener was an organization I helped build and loosen -- training tapes of this is 25 years ago.
And people walk up and say you know I'm now this the senate majority leader -- -- that.
The speaker of the house have been you know this this long term evolution in the states you did you have this long term evolution of the party.
And we're not an Etch A -- -- it was an unfortunate comment -- Romney's communications director.
We -- -- broadly Conservative Party we don't have to be severely conservative as Romney says he packed but we also need something council that is really hard to do.
In American politics we need a new generation of breakthroughs.
This country is trouble.
The industrial world is in trouble you look at that Spain has 21 and 22% unemployment.
The -- -- suffering 13 decline in the stand living there are huge problems around the world one of the key elements policy in this platform.
One is an American independence energy policy that really is aimed at making sure no future president -- bows to a Saudi king.
And making sure that we bring several million jobs home -- producing probably four million barrels a -- more of oil -- states.
Second to be a personal social conditions account.
Back in 1983 the last time we've tried to fix Social Security.
If we have adopted -- Chilean model where people of the personal account the -- sixteen trillion dollars in savings.
Right today -- that's how much the buildup would have been just -- what's happened and in Chile which is not a theory it's the it's actually happening.
We need -- we need -- approach frankly need to stand a very firmly for religious liberty.
How do you -- the Catholic Church is very real and it's not just he's afraid he expressed that platform.
I think you have a plank that says flatly that the government should not.
Force its values on any religious institution.
And I think I think that that's a very key part of this.
I -- -- about Baptist school lot of Catholic school Louisiana College presidents of their right to life institution.
And that if Obama -- -- impose and then they will close the institution.
Rather than violate the religious beliefs now.
Is George W.
Bush had issued an executive order that that guaranteed right of conscience.
Obama's doing just the opposite he has -- opposing government.
I think you need to have I would like to see all of the revenue from this dude who spent energy program go into a debt repayment -- -- but if you look at the size of the federal deficit today and you figure you're saying -- -- the royalties that would flow from the ocean out of sort of sequestered.
Right in federal land -- that right.
Now where does that money now go -- and just general operating.
All right so so you need to get to -- -- -- Paul Ryan has started on the road towards.
And you need to be able to pay under a minute this is -- we get to the general election this fall you you're talking to a very large decision.
I think do you have any reason to believe that Mitt Romney would where -- in business if he's elected nominee would resist you want any of those -- I don't know that there's a lot of had a lot of annual adopt -- you had a meeting with him recently -- thought we haven't talked to a specific details we've we've certainly talked in general.
Here he is as I said he has set himself is described itself as severely conservative in the -- -- that speech I think.
I suspect he will accept.
A solid conservative platform but he does have consultants.
Who were in the Etch -- -- tradition.
Who would like to somehow go into.
The situation and I have anybody -- -- look at.
Away advancement to figure that's just his comment was made reference of the fact that you do -- kind of emphasis reset not a good you don't.
Change your convictions going into the journalists not winning this mean I mean that's as an unfair to describe him as a as a man who's gonna rewrite his pull -- right warrant for former army and set.
And clearly that's -- reference was a lot of the ideas are still running on every candidate makes it makes it makes it change in emphasis to social Rob Glaser group places in the party.
Let's have a very solid aggressive.
Which he can campaign on which can also children to take for example energy independence that's like a 79 to sixteen issues.
I mean there are very few Democrats who like us depending on Saudi Arabia.
And and and almost no Republicans who like mr.
peninsula -- -- so so you can you can build an aggressive platform.
That also sets the stage for a fall campaign.
Mean Reagan didn't exactly we set in the fall of 1980.
-- he articulated a series of things that that brought the country together in a pretty decisive victory.
So let's talk about.
What's happened to use -- and where you are now when.
You -- while you're here in Washington and then you had a platform here at Fox News and elsewhere.
You essentially you're sort of -- -- post political phase of your career.
Then you ran.
And got back in the middle of things.
Where do you go now where you where what's the future for you how do you -- do you still like to serve and an administration not I think you mean.
If I'm not a fan of not being the nominee.
More destructive to chairman -- -- of the Republican National Committee -- -- wanna work this fall to help defeat Obama anyway could wherever.
Whatever the team thinks I can do to be helpful and we'll do and beyond that to use your phrase -- go back to oppose political career.
I'm glad I did this and it wasn't for me it was important as a citizen.
To try to do some very hard things to try to bring new ideas and new approach to turn it much harder than -- -- me.
But it was you it was the right thing for me to do at that point both of my life and for what I -- the country.
I have no regrets but but it's it's.
It's clear that that governor Romney -- a very good job of building a very substantial machine.
And and that is villages -- -- Santorum was discovered in Pennsylvania right now.
It's a challenge he's taking it for his own good he's -- to gonna -- I think used to make a decision on his head open everybody watching will.
Have that family and the president -- -- daughter and I respect him.
It's a difficult situation of -- -- him.
Wish which -- situation you're going to money.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- But we will what will probably -- -- our -- account for this week that you.
Four and a million dollars and effect I think slightly less and -- -- much more than one of the two -- Florida got to be a -- -- and I think yeah.
Are an unfortunate aren't enforcing our guys try to match Romney and turned at the we didn't have anything like his capacity as Melissa Tony.
-- -- why it is sending me Clinton Hillary came out of the 2000 campaign 125 million dollars mean.
You could you go out and you do fundraisers in new if you work things out with people -- -- -- A fair amount of time for a couple years raising my oldest will severely constrain the extent to which you can campaign do -- and travel but not from.
Well really -- if there's like him and I guess only -- -- campaign and as we're we're we're operating on a shoestring and we're frankly.
We've had great response from Delaware it was a mistake you can operate in expense we have great response and in North Carolina.
And we'll see what happens in those -- upcoming primaries and but it's really if she -- when you're on out on the road or even last night 12.
-- vigilant of the salute and -- which people walk up.
An and Delaware as we know with chemistry.
People a lot of us know please drop out if welcomes -- glad you're here I'm glad you're talking about ideas please stay and how can I help.
And so I do think there's a desire for a more -- oriented.
Even even if that doesn't translate necessarily to be and -- take on -- should.
So -- Orlando at one point was leading in the polls -- even suggested that you're on a glide path to nomination and it didn't work out I want to ask you questions about your faith yes.
How did your -- affect the way you dealt with the with the disappointment Wednesday and defeats that it came your way.
I'm sort of glad Katherine after running into anti aircraft gun -- me -- I don't have half -- itself if it one of the biggest things.
Plus that it -- and John Paul the second -- ninety's changed world.
Lewis from a lot of time studying the Pope going back to Poland studying his life under communism and before that his -- -- nazism we lived a hundred deaths and he was caught.
He doesn't say have courage.
He's has been -- And I think I get a real emotional that.
On Easter Sunday that's good remember.
If you can shadow if you can.
Hide and beneath the cross.
-- -- -- This is a great campaign we've had great experiences.
Some things work some things don't.
Would you how would you describe your relationship right now -- -- you guys have said some very harsh things about each other.
They accepted him and argued the vulture capitalism case although that was much phrase the -- agreement that pretty harsh stuff coming for mature a conservative about a businessman.
He sits in quite harsh things about -- -- you minute -- so -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And and that's part of the business these these on the fund -- -- brilliantly.
We have both -- and I think San prominent business we -- we are absolutely committed to defeating Barack Obama.
If Mitt Romney ends up as a Republican nominee I will work -- hard for him as it would for myself and I think in all honesty.
-- -- let but I think it loud and -- the Republican nominee.
He would work as hard for me and we really see this we were both grandparents.
We really see this is a fight for the future of our grandchildren's country -- see this is not just defeating Obama but changing Washington.
Is really really central -- -- this country.
I mean this this is the most important election some -- 1860.
Barack Obama is a genuine radical.
And and and if he gets reelected with this economy and these gas prices -- this deficit.
Who knows what he do -- second.
Likely be constrained Joba looked -- that Republicans would control.
-- one house hospital just a president who exploit every advantage of the presidency to minimize constraint.
-- know when you're the secretary -- defense -- as we don't need congress' approval to go to war is wrong with the UN.
And now this is this is not an administration I would rely on the ability of congress street mr.
Agassi -- -- these two candidates Gingrich if.
