Breaking news on Fox News Channel North Korea has launched a rocket against him in defiance of the world's orders if you will.

And we have just learned they had a media briefing Mitt less than a minute ago in North Korean Pyongyang.

And -- it's been described to us as North Korean officials flummoxed.

And stumbling.

As if something went wrong though they haven't admitted that any that thing went wrong.

The question was how quickly did it go wrong did -- go wrong during the first stage of this rocket the second or the third it's important.

Jennifer Griffin has an answer now we're breaking news from the Pentagon Jennifer this happened fast.

Well shepherd senior US offense that that defense official tells us.

That they now know that the rocket -- broke up between ninety seconds and two minutes into the flight that would suggest that it was during the first phase that is significant because it is significantly worse.

Then in 2009 when it actually managed to get to the third -- that's when it failed.

In 2009.

So it did not apparently make it out of the first phase that would suggest that the debris fell somewhere.

In the ocean in the Pacific Ocean off of South Korea's coast not as far as the Philippines -- that would have been much later into the flight.

-- now a senior US official telling us that it broke up somewhere between ninety seconds in two minutes into the flight.

-- Japan is reporting that as well and it's -- South Korea the United States intelligence understand that North Korea's missile launch failed.

That's a spokesman for South Korea's defense ministry told reporters in the briefing adding that Seoul South Korea would make additional announcement.

After final confirmation of course we have -- confirm now.

So what happens next.

What Gordon Chang on the line -- -- -- Gordon you would think that the north Koreans would have prepared for the possible eventuality that this thing did not go well.

And that they wouldn't have people quote flummoxed and stumbling at a news conference after they have brought the world's media and to witness it.

-- there was great confidence that this launch would be successful and actually I thought that -- would be successful because I thought that they had made the adjustments after the 2006 and 2009 failures got to remember that in 1998.

The North Korea and spun the world we -- largely successful test and since then they've gone backwards so I guess I must be flummoxed as well in terms and thinking that you know.

I just knew that this -- was going to work.

What now we're faced with this this brand new leader of North Korea about -- no one in the world seem to have much of any information.

A 29 year old guy who who happen to be the son of Kim Jong ill and now he runs this nation.

If he thought this thing was gonna work if his people were not even prepared to discuss with the media.

-- -- the fact that he did not work or at least know how to cover their tracks and say some things.

-- is there concern at all that he would do something irrational.

Now as a result of this worldwide media spectacle of a failure.

At which he is now staring.

Yeah I think that's a very real risk.

This is certainly going to be a nuclear test.

Not too far down the road but there could also be provocations against South Korea because that plays very well inside the North Korean regime.

And there will be consequences for the people who failed in terms of of this missile launch I I can't believe that they you know a spectacular fund success.

But the hundredth anniversary of the founder North Korea will go unpunished so.

There will be real problems -- -- the -- the United States should try to take advantage of that to destabilize.

Pyongyang's.

That -- did this event was not televised inside North Korea the North Korean people have not been notified of this.

But you would wouldn't it be -- you're -- speculation that this new leader of North Korea in his first big moment on the international stage.

Would be watching this and watching the world's media report of his dismal failure at this very moment.

Yes you know there was a lot of speculation in South Korea and -- some very informed observers who thought that it would not be launched today because today.

Kim Jong-Il on is supposed to get 201 very important post which is chairman of the national defense commission.

And and so there was this feeling that they did not want to have the missile -- to upstage.

The big event and Pyongyang's.

So right now not only do we have this spectacular failure on the anniversary of emails on purpose we also have -- unknown what was supposed to be the coronation of his grandson so there's got to be some very severe consequences -- technicians and scientists in North Korea right now.
