-- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney with a slight edge over President Obama.

A Fox News poll finds if the presidential election were held today -- would get 46% of the vote to mr.

Obama's 44%.

Another Fox News poll shows the president's job -- -- approval rating is now at 42%.

Down five points from just last month.

For more on this we're joined by Karl Rove he is the former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to president George W.

Bush also.

A Fox News contributor but nobody knows polls better than you do -- worth pointing out that essentially the president and Mitt Romney are tied because of the margin of error.

But when you look at those numbers for a sitting president.

To be in that kind of a position against a challenger who is months away from the nominating convention.

This is not good news for the White House says it.

You know -- poles are gonna go up.

Go down but what's amazing to me is is -- Romney is slightly better.

As you say statistically tied with Obama at the end of a very ugly primary process that has not been.

Particularly helpful to a Mitt Romney.

It.

If you look inside the numbers.

That the ballots really -- among independent voters independent voters break for.

-- Romney by a 4337.

Margin.

And the deeper you go into this -- the worse it looks for President Obama.

Well one of those polls includes the question about economic policies are the president's economic policies.

Helping or hurting American voters and here are the numbers 37%.

Now.

Say they are hurting me.

31%.

Say they are helping the country.

Well another way to look at that is is -- 68%.

Of the American people think that when President Obama spent the last three years doing.

Has either not helped at all or is hurt and if you look inside the numbers again it shows big concerns about deficits.

-- -- look at this if you will then down here at the bottom on the white board.

It is -- do you think is capable fix in the economy.

Obama 39 Romney 46 and among independents 28% think that Obama's better able to fix the economy.

And 41% think it's Romney and there's also big gender gap in this ballot.

If you take a look at it among men.

It's 38 Obama 52 -- a fourteen point deficit.

And among women it's 49 Obama 41.

Romney and eight point deficit among women firfer.

Romney.

But today fourteen point deficit among men for for President Obama what we've we've got an interesting gender did to gender gaps in -- one bigger than the other.

I've got another -- to get -- and -- second but you bring up the gender issue and I just wonder if this Hilary Rosen flap you know criticizing and Romney.

For not having worked today in her life she said and then apologizing for -- He's that feud over has the damage been done.

Well wasn't is -- -- was not over with see Hilary Rosen apology because of frankly was not an apology nine sentences.

You know most of which were devoted to deal -- defending Hillary Rosen position one cents and I apologized and -- and anybody else who was offended.

And then the next sends the final sense of the statement was one -- took the knife.

Back and -- and let's get rid of this faux war on on.

Stay at home moms well you know it was Hillary Rosen and declared the war the war however has now been declared over and buy an extraordinary statement by President Obama yesterday.

Now this will participate in this episode but I think the damage is gonna continue to resonate because it's gonna leave the impression -- the Democrats to have a very judgmental view about women who stay home and our stay at home mom.

So very quickly on this point the president in making that statement recognize that this was a fire he had to try to put out.

Yeah that he personally had slot and put out they.

You know even they'd they'd try the night before to put it out with a 140 character tweets.

From the campaign manager Jim Messina and then one for David Axelrod but that was clearly unacceptable the president had scheduled yesterday a series of local interviews.

Local television anchors around the country was -- subject he could not avoid.

And he wisely though I suspect not happily.

Jumped into the fray and said enough -- enough -- this was out of bounds and this is wrong and that's about as good as you can get an ending the conflict.

He also jumped into the fray over the Supreme Court hearing of his health care law when he addressed the on newspaper editors in Washington.

He had some -- -- pretty critical comments for the court the Fox News poll asked whether people think that the president was trying to intimidate the Supreme Court.

With his health care comments and overwhelmingly.

Those those responding to this poll 56% said yes he was.

-- -- -- -- discussed about for a couple days obviously has sunk in this is not where the president wants to be you even have damaged some Democrats who obviously think he was trying to intimidate the court if you get.

56% not -- not not a good standard for the president can you imagine what would happen if his predecessor was say the Supreme Court was taking up the humvee case.

Which had to do with.

Habeas corpus rights of illegal enemy combatants did you read it won't happen of his predecessor had tried to intimidate Supreme Court -- -- New York Times would have been calling for his impeachment.

Presidents -- -- do -- escape this with a debt nodded not not a not a major reconstruction for a problem always interesting to hear your take Karl Rove thank.
