We start things off today with a preview of the eleventh annual TriBeCa film festival.

Which kicks off this week and don't worry can't get to -- -- and lower Manhattan to check out the indie films feature.

You can also find them online and video on didn't amnesty air here to tell us what's in store executive director of the TriBeCa film festival Nancy -- Hi welcome back thanks so much for other banks -- being here so another here yeah -- -- let's break it down what's in store first -- I'll remind people how this festival got started and why and maybe how far it's come.

Sure we restarted after nine elevenths at number eleven to bring business back to -- -- So that was eleven years ago were all now -- in our winner preteens is I think -- tweet where between yet was so we we feel the business is booming downtown that's not really what we're about -- -- about showing great films.

To all of Manhattan and all that all of New York City owners who want to come to the possible.

Let's talk about.

-- films that are submitted now I know that the submissions have increased.

Throughout the years right so that when this first started how many films submissions did you get approximately in where is it now each year the amount of -- that you go through to figure out who will be.

The first doing -- about 15100 and this year we had -- about six or 7000.

And those are shorts and feature length film so both both -- who had the task of going eastbound I have a whole squad of programmers associate programmers and system programmers free screeners in the whole team I mean it takes a village around the TriBeCa film -- on the programming department has.

Is a big component that.

We mentioned its focus in lower Manhattan however -- it's it's becoming international.

Tell how many countries are represented -- -- there's about 4600 represented in this late and what we feel that that.

We love international film obviously but also their New -- some filled with somebody different cultures that it's good to show films for the people who live here.

-- things arts and film tend to reflect what's going on -- -- going on today.

Did you see a running theme in the phones that were submitted what are the filmmakers talking about this you know accusing.

You you only see it -- after you -- -- -- you don't see them while you're picking them but but when the whole slate comes together and you get a sense of the scope of the program you really do start to see themes.

One of the things that we've noticed a series particularly in the American future line phones.

Film making is a long process that takes 23 years to make a film and what we've seen on messes -- Is a lot of interesting lower budget films but they're using a lot of creativity get their stories across so.

Less about how much money they're spending and hum and more about strong script and strong storytelling techniques.

Let's focus on -- -- so many.

But -- -- that you liked it that will highlight a few -- to spotlight here so we have war with the black and first went there but he -- -- those are -- -- some year old from these committees.

What what stood out to you about these and.

-- more to the thumb about a child soldier in an unnamed African country and that that.

Actress who plays the child soldier was found on the streets literally so it's an amazingly -- -- on the story telling is just incredible.

And I think -- -- film everyone should watch I mean especially in this in this road coney 2012 it's it's kind of incredible Pacific -- fictionalized version of that story.

-- -- -- -- is is about it's set against the backdrop on the Holocaust but it's not a holocaust documentary -- in the documentary but it's about.

History and memory and family and how we take our stories down through generations and I was so moved by this -- and I would hope everyone -- -- -- And then also at first we intend.

One of -- American -- where you see sort of startling things happening this is you know you do you set off -- -- on the what you believe as a conventional.

Conventional story and then it takes -- turn.

And it becomes a sort of fastening expose and what happens people when they get put in a tough situation.

And Benjamin Dickinson is is a really great filmmaker and I believe we'll take credit for discovering him out of the -- -- I think people will stand up and take notice of this -- From you experience that -- up and I know also south by southwest film festival before -- started with trying to borrow.

How much -- film that's the festivals still healthy independent filmmaker.

I'm there are a lot of festivals -- but if it's still such a necessary part of this business.

In terms of finding a distributor getting any attention and it's very hard to even get into the -- -- right.

I think -- play an important role of of of helping any community see independent film and foreign film and an even big films big studio films because.

We need to -- -- shine a spotlight on films of routes that come from around the world and -- do that.

On the industry's side industry needs festivals because there's so many films made every year they need traders who can help.

Weed out some of the better films and a stronger phones that should be seen by wider wider audiences.

And it do you see that it it's more competitive now I -- with all -- festivals that are out there do you feel.

That it is a competitive business even just TriBeCa film that's on -- on.

Yes I think.

I think it's a competitive business -- a lot of strong -- -- in this country and abroad so we we very actively.

-- seek out the phone we wanna show we work hard to get them here we hope we show them at great -- experience of a wanna come back that's all part of our you know that's our mandate that's what we are here to do.

Yeah he gets a lot of attention when you get big name films as well on board to let's say look at this festival and it's here you have.

The five year engagement with Jason seagull.

Time and it went think we had a little bit but -- that as well at so it's gonna start off with this film quality client tells little bit about it what do you and is so.

The fight hearing agent in the really funny film Jason Segal and Emily Blunt and it's just these big -- that we showed the festival they're funny in themselves and -- like to open with a comedy some years and this is a comedy and I loved watching the stump.

But also help shine a spotlight on all the films in the past -- this kind of attention and a Catholic.

Of our -- in New York City need a big film like this.

Asked the and it looked and speaking of big films in the they're only under the -- yes let's talk about getting it in entrance into the festival.

How excited are you as somebody that's part of -- back when you hear that this is going to be part I mean it's just gonna bring.

So many fans -- gas.

I mean we're doing -- screening that's primarily for heroes I'm so for -- people who work hard in New York City and everyday heroes too so.

We're you know firefighters in September 11 people and so it's if it's really much part of our mandate to to try -- you know because we -- started out of September -- September 11 so.

This is really fits into our heroes theme that we've had running off and on throughout their life -- on the possible.

Of course and just so we can -- -- some -- there aren't that opening it premier.

Is on April 18 with my hearing -- -- and then closing night would be the 28.

It isn't I remember that these movies are coming out in theaters -- so even you can't come in -- you not see them in the movie theaters of -- and others some of the big premieres there's also some big names that are behind some of these small films this -- -- James Franco with his documentary he -- little bit about now I can't so this is in this Philip actually uses general hospital footage from when he was on general hospital and cuts -- together it's very experimental.

But if you're against -- -- and you're gonna field -- from the okay and also Chris -- -- belief he wrote and stars and one of the films it's there yes so this is not construct a lightning it's the one of its seems he has passion project.

He's a really great NN and I can't wait Friday and since the C because this is the world premiere so he's you know it could.

Teen movie -- that he and he's such a popular sensation yes.

Christian Slater as well returns to the big screen.

Freaky geeky.

Freaky -- is a film that people find find it it's it's a little bit rough and tumble but it'll you'll find a fine.

It's directed by Charlie Nassau new and interesting enough as Walter -- suns so.

That the -- a whole lot of pedigree in this OK we'll look out for that and journey the -- journey.

Yeah that's -- -- -- that was -- kind of the story of their new lead singer yes so it's called don't stop believing every man's journey.

And this film is about how when that -- need a new lead singer they went on to the Internet to look at journey cover bands and -- YouTube YouTube sensation and and they interviewed and auditioned these guys.

And they found this one out of -- sorry out of I'm totally -- -- -- -- among and and they brought him the United States and he's believed singer Ford turning now.

I know I -- -- those songs right on he got me from anywhere and yeah he's found yet.

Now they're gonna have their own the Philippines SR editor and a prominent ventilated -- they're -- hey good I think you know I don't even count there are these means that he is says the star power behind some of these homes but stay out they need -- festival's much as anybody else would you.

Do you think that's a very different -- their films.

They looking to find distribution at the festival looking to find good audiences of the puzzle there also films that are launching out of the possible -- that already have distribution you used by the engagement.

And avengers as as an example of -- -- -- where together with them marketing these films but also -- films like your sister sister at the bustle that will be coming out soon.

And -- really amazing so my hope -- and on the ceiling -- film.

So this is so it's their vessels have a lot of different roles and TriBeCa.

Helps them in all these different -- -- I think that we also asked Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal about this because I was wondering if he wanted to get behind.

-- an independent movie could he just get me tomorrow on check out what he had sent -- if you wanted to make an independent film could you go out tomorrow and do it and -- -- just independent.

It's not an easy Tunisian model no nothing -- -- it.

Not when it comes to actually tell the people having to pay for something they wanna know what they're getting something for me you know.

It's a classic.

Situations so matter who you are that's all well and good at the end of the -- You gotta have somebody if they want them.

-- a little Green stuff like that -- some more important than -- who's directing.

Even if your property near you it's still probably need to go that route uphill putts to fall if he had a documentary or something that he wanted to get out there that's that's a tough you know there's a lot of movies and people -- for -- and then some of you buy for their attentions just about on the phone.

Been in of course the minute summit -- in the that's all -- he's been in films at the festival I mean why not to think I was I.

-- -- an indie -- that the festival definitely haven't submitted I'd say no I mean he's my boss so -- he doesn't everybody have to submit but.

We do discuss films that he's in whether or not they want to.

Show of -- usually up to the distributor more than him.

-- and sent out from the -- ounces not pounds magazines and then let's talk about how people can get out and see them.

Now how many -- -- screen at the -- during the past.

We have eleven multiplex screens and then we have our big gala premiere venue which is that the bureau of Manhattan community college so twelve experience.

In addition online.

Online you can watch films online we have -- features and a handful of -- -- -- you can see that are that launched at the same time -- there.

Festival screenings and they can participate online as well is that some voting process there -- -- yes there's online -- -- there's -- -- commenting and there's -- in the -- -- -- -- -- -- that you can get involved online.

And which films are video and -- man.

So TriBeCa also runs.

A distribution platform and over forty million homes you can see our films so Time Warner Cable or -- -- a lot of the other.

Networks you can see our films and -- four films that will be day and date as they say so same time of the hustle on that platform as well.

For information I guess on the web saying yes to -- -- zone dot com.

-- -- -- -- Now in addition to all the movies that aside and make sure we get this -- there -- that that that's going on there's the drive then there are cleaning his presentations pounds.

The people and come out and see and hear some of their favorite.

Filmmakers talk -- their movies.

So yes we do it a gigantic street fair on the last Saturday the -- so that the 28 again.

And that brings like 300 to 400000 people out on granite street if hopefully that somehow come out.

We also do I'm pretty new this year -- we start at last year as a soccer event we do it on the first senator vessels of the 21 so.

Industry soccer leagues as well as kid's soccer games that's -- forty.

We yard drive then every year -- first 3 -- days of the festival and that is jaws for the hundredth year anniversary celebration of universal.

We're doing doing these with a treasure hunt.

And we're showing knuckleball into the film it's in the bustle about -- volume -- before our professional baseball players they're teaching kids how to throw an apple -- Yeah a lot of blood coming out people obvious to the website summertime incentives it eating -- here.

Check it all out online again in the TriBeCa film dot com TriBeCa film dot com -- race are you looking ahead to next year.

Finally I'm also pretty loyal thinking about next area -- -- hopefully -- -- -- check in with you then February statement that you -- -- TriBeCa film festival which kicks off once again April 18.
