An average US immigrant might spend months -- years waiting to get a Green card but a little known government program actually allows rich foreigners -- -- in line.
All they have to do was invest in the US company the -- administration seems to love this does that amount to selling US citizenship David north has a -- -- For immigration studies and a former assistant to the US secretary of labor he joins us live from Washington David tell me about this program.
Thank you for asking me program.
Most of the program involves investments have half a million dollars.
And if somebody is otherwise unqualified to be an immigrant they can come the United States for half million dollars.
And get a Green card for themselves and for their entire family sometimes it works out to -- -- about a 100000 dollars birdies out.
And there's.
Quite a bit of activity in this area and I find it distasteful and done I -- the program would go away.
So what you're saying is -- someone has 500000 dollars and they can they can actually bringing and they prove they -- -- create and jobs at least ten jobs they jump ahead in line.
And the threshold for the amount of people allowed in this country does not go up.
They have for a physicists store in theory and an economist that isn't rich would have to go back and lines of this rich person -- in right.
That's exactly right.
So what bothers you about this program that's been on the books for so long.
Well I have several things that I'm I'm troubled but -- first post tacky I don't think it's a good idea to sell.
Cell Green cards that are admission the United States for money.
Second it's a tiny program.
It's a troubled program.
It doesn't do much for either creation of jobs or creation and economic.
Development right and finally it finally is something wrong agency.
Anyway actually -- -- on the books for awhile do you feel as -- this administration is pushing this more than others.
Oh absolutely I listeners to the the program was chugging along and a few hundred admissions a year few hundred races a year.
And this administration decided that this is it.
Greater than sliced bread apparently and they have been pushing their staff to say yes to.
To the various applications -- yet.
Staff this has been reluctant over the years sometimes this is an agency that says yes about 99% of the time.
And in this program it's 80s%.
70% sometimes lows -- 25%.
So this is a difficult program and staff recognizes that.
And they leadership wants to issue these bases anyway.
By David you shed light in this in this is the first time I've heard about this program so it's important.
Your fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies immigration will be front center this election season thanks so much.
You bet I.
