-- in New York State teacher evaluations are required in every single district but it teachers' union in buffalo is -- pushing back against that evaluation system.
By refusing to change it.
There holding up more than five million dollars in much needed funding for struggling schools in buffalo right Kyle Olson is the founder of its.
Action group.
Kyle this is the ultimate standoff.
Where's this gonna fall and what's at stake if they don't get an agreement on -- valuations.
Well they there's money at stake but what is happening is you've got democratic lawmakers you've got parents you've got clergy that are putting pressure.
On the union putting pressure on the board to come to some sort of resolution and you've got organizations like.
Parent groups and those sorts of organizations.
Putting pressure because that is what's necessary.
Because it's interesting because what a lot of people don't realize is the vast majority teachers around the country don't have a meaningful evaluation process right.
It what does that mean.
When you don't have evaluations you don't have real accountability and you don't have real consequences.
For teacher performance and so that's what they're trying to do it in in New York State and specifically in buffalo.
And specifically in New York State Kyle there is a state law that all districts much must have teacher evaluation -- What's hanging in the balance is five point six million dollars in money right now.
And I understand the fight has ramifications for existing funding of twenty million.
For school improvement next year and the other thing that it seems extraordinary about buffalo is there's a democratic.
-- party assemblywoman.
Who says this is very disconcerting to be at the point where we have adults who say they are not going to follow the rules when a law is created every one has to follow it and I believe that lawmakers says.
That this state should take over.
You bright and that's that's what's incredible is now you have democratic lawmakers in effect standing up to the union I mean this is a major development.
Because they're looking at their school districts like buffalo like Chicago.
Many other districts -- -- the country that are poorly performing are not meeting the needs of kids and they're saying we can't accept this anymore and this is not tolerable.
And so they're they're pushing back against the union and but what we're seeing is the union is fighting for the adult interest.
And and so.
What's got to happen is.
These lawmakers these parents have got to fight back and so that's finally what is starting to happen and that's what's going to make the difference.
Here's -- the buffalo teachers.
A representative says -- room war.
He says the teachers voted overwhelmingly not to accept the latest document that the district has provided us.
We're gonna go to court and sue the state.
That's right that that's what they do is they want to go to the courts to get their way.
And in as you said at the beginning this is the same school district which last year spent nine million dollars.
I'm plastic surgery for teachers because it's -- of the collective bargaining agreement me.
I mean things are out of control in this districting clearly the adults interests are coming first.
And so parents and and lawmakers are standing up and saying that's got to change.
All right Kyle Wilson the founder and publisher of -- AG news dot org sir thank you very much for bringing the story and thank you.
And -- democratic governor will be the torch on -- good Governor Cuomo.
