Fox News alert a brand new poll putting Mitt Romney five points ahead of president Barack Obama.

The Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll showing the president getting 44% of the vote.

To governor Romney's 49%.

Independent pollster Scott Rasmussen -- president of Rasmussen Reports dot com Scott I know this is just a snapshot.

Sort of a moment in time.

But what does -- tell you about the president's chances for reelection.

Well look this number is as good as it's gotten for Mitt Romney.

If you look back over the last month the president to Romney had pretty much consistently been in the mid forties if the election were held today it will be very much of a toss up.

A what that tells me is events in the next few months with the economy the Supreme Court decisions and other factors.

Are gonna determine who wins in November right track wrong track is the government going in the right direction at the wrong direction would -- Well it's we -- what the country going in the right direction -- the wrong direction most people aren't as concerned about what happens to the government what happens in the real world and right now 49%.

Say there were half that things are heading in the right direction give a sense of scale on that.

If you went back to the end of the bush years that number was in the -- so people feeling a little better.

But President Obama had a great first your office and at the peak 40%.

Said that the things were heading in the right direction earlier this year.

34%.

Said we're heading the right track.

Now it's down at 49% again this is just on a rough indicator of the public mood if it keeps moving down bad news for the president.

On the issues and I guess this should come as no surprise to anyone who listen to governor Romney's speech last night.

That he talked almost exclusively about the economy and that's the number one issue according to voters right.

That's right we tracked his every day 48% right now say the economy is a top issue not even if it -- -- not even close there's such a context the last time a president ran for reelection in 2004.

More than 40% were saying national security was a top issue only 20% said the economy.

We live in a different world but it's partly because of all the economic news around us you know only 49% of homeowners now think their -- was worth -- they paid for.

That's big cause for concern I know this is your business Scott and I don't want to try to diminish the importance of what you when you're Stafford doing in any way shape or form could because we love it but I'm wondering at what point.

Do snapshots periods of time in April.

Really sort of become hardened.

Feelings on the part of voters as to the way things are going right now.

Are we talking in May be the conventions this summer wet.

It'll be sometime around Labor Day before and really get a final sense we've got to get through a few more economic reports and get through those Supreme Court hearing see how things play out.

What we do know is that -- voters get bad news on the economy.

Confidence in the economy falls immediately.

-- good news comes it takes many many months to restore that confidence so so economic indicators between now early summer very very important Rasmussen Reports dot com.

Scott Rasmussen is the president good to see Scott thanks so much.
