Big story today folks critics on both sides hitting the president on what they say is the politicizing of the death of Osama -- lot.
Here is Senator John McCain on this.
All I can say is that this is going to be very rough campaign and -- I have had a great honor of serving in the company of heroes you know the thing about heroes.
They don't brag.
Interest and John McCain right and he's a hero himself of course.
Arianna Huffington is among those who said this quote I think it's one thing to celebrate the fact that they -- such a great job.
With television special she says to commemorate this today.
All that is perfectly legitimate but to turn it into a campaign added.
Is the most one of the most despicable things that you can do very strong words from.
-- Arianna Huffington about the president here so we're joined now.
By former New York governor George -- who of course served as governor during the September 11 attacks and governor welcome.
-- is happening there today to thank you.
EE I mean from all -- John McCain and I -- -- so I think Ariana huffington's comment that it's despicable as the right word.
You know I remember when Osama bin Laden was killed that there were those who went down -- ground zero to cheer and to.
Two express their joy I didn't feel that.
Because today as we've had every day since he died we still have brave men and women out there in Afghanistan and around the world fighting.
The war against terror and too many of them are dying and you don't celebrate your brilliance.
When it's because we have brave young Americans out there putting their lives on the line I think it's wrong I think it should stop and and -- the president should apologize for having done.
Yeah I mean a lot of these reactions that lead dead folks to think that nobody's taking the high road in this situation.
And you know -- what you mean the point you just -- has been completely absent on this conversation.
I mean one might expect the president would -- You know great day great job on behalf of those Navy SEALs of course but we have so many men and women who are out -- in this fight to that I was appalled.
At the time when President Obama called out the fact that it was seal team six that had engaged -- -- this rate.
Because they're still out there they're still risking their lives in a few months later we hit that horrible incident where the helicopter was shot down and Afghanistan we lost so thirty National Guard and seals.
We should be thanking them and praying for their safety every day and that patting ourselves on the back as politicians.
And trying to use it in -- camp and -- Paul admiral -- -- weigh in on this as well I in an interview that was done that that -- to all of the people who are in the situation room in that famous photo that we all remember -- it does take a look at what admiral Mike Mullen had to say.
About this he says I do worry a great deal that this time of year that somehow this gets spun into election politics I can assure you.
That those individuals who risk their lives the last thing in the world that they want.
Is it to be spun into that and there has been some reaction out there and I'm sure the Navy SEALs are also divided like most Americans are.
On some of this but there's been some reaction that that they also -- not happy.
It as well I I can't speak for any of the sales but I can say that they're fighting for our country.
They're not fighting for a political cause or political candidate they're putting their lives on the line because they believe and America and they have answered the call.
And for a politician to try to benefit personally is wrong.
But Tyson chicken ought to get it here one is Mitt Romney's reaction -- -- to you know use while working the crowd incidents sort of an off handed comment yesterday.
You know anybody would have done that because it was asked would you have done that because the president has question that.
And he's today you know even Jimmy Carter would have done it is that appropriate.
I don't think he takes shots at others but I do think he's right that any president.
Who understood the magnitude of the battle we were facing against al-Qaeda would have taken that action I think that's.
A fairly safe thing to say but I don't think you take a shot at any other president or other political figure but that is very different from running in the hat.
Patting yourself on the back and saying the other person wouldn't have done it so I think there's a magnitude of difference here and off in a comment that may have been slightly inappropriate.
In a conscious political strategy.
To pat yourself on the back and say look how great I am and it's not just the -- you hear Joseph Biden every day talking about how -- Obama got bin Laden we didn't.
The seals and the brave soldiers and.
You know he -- -- when he can't be okay and he -- credit for that yet on both sides that are attacking that that you know he did the right thing and -- -- courageous moment Leon Panetta said you know was it was up.
That it was gonna go.
Right in that -- the odds were against it.
It in his mind so what -- what's the right over the -- -- take if you weren't issues you know how would you say yes I did what what the commander in chief must -- in a very tough moment.
And strike the right.
I would do what a leader supposed to do and that is give credit to others and particularly give credit to those who are out there on the front line.
What I would have done is very simply said I had confidence in the men and women out there fighting the fight.
Not the -- this great political leader -- she is not not trying to gain political advantage over his opponent by running ads that is wrong I've never seen it.
In the history of this country before and it should stop now.
Well you know what's interesting is that we're having this conversation.
I instead of the conversation that you would want to have it here you know working for the reelection of the president which is that.
That he was the one who made that cop and that's not what books are talking about today's result -- modest thank you so much governor always good to hear -- from you thank you today.
