John it was repeatedly -- network.
-- shows -- intimate with a don't try to blame somebody else you and your staff chose to start this.
I'm gonna continue to find ways to help more people learn how to get a job learn how to get a better job and learn some data on the job.
By the end of my second term.
Okay.
Please we'll have the first permanent base on the moon and it will be American.
And -- lose Internet are just a few of your absolute favorite moments from the new yes.
The improbable and improbably successful.
Presidential campaign of former house speaker Newt Gingrich.
Who today will lay his -- down as he suspends his campaign and gets ready to endorse -- Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
As the presumptive nominee of his party.
And it's been a pretty wild ride and it's been delightful in a lot of ways you.
I've seen the former house speaker on this very show talking about selling Alaska talking about his ideas that he had and it's been.
The delight that you don't usually see in presidential politics.
And it's been a treat for reporters that -- brief reporters like.
Bob Cusack he's the managing editor the hill and your top let's she's a reporter for roll call and as part of our ongoing effort to build -- in Washington isn't too big shot.
Political publications in Washington to bring you guys together in the Internet loves -- welcome back.
We in this sneaking which are paying.
Oh great so it was that the moon base and you know I was I was very upset because we apparently did not have the rights to the footage of the penguin inviting him -- -- yeah it was there is do you Saint Louis touching that and an attractive and prices and about it.
-- was.
Totally unorthodox.
And unlike anything before.
-- when I was doing the handicapping for the race.
And I wrote it down Internet you -- you can look at I said did you get Gingrich's odds of winning the Republican nomination for 251.
And I thought I was kind of being generous but it back.
He made the last -- he was -- that he was in the final flight of competitors.
Why did Newt Gingrich do as well as he.
That's a really good question I think number one is the debates he did well in debates and we had more debates this cycle that I think we've had in a very long time so gave him the opportunity and -- free media opportunity to perform well and probably his best and I -- and I think that was.
I think that was probably -- biggest points.
I should point out that the number of debates when we seemed like it was a lot longer there about the same number it just seemed like there was so many more.
And Bob.
For Gingrich from.
Who had developed a very successful career for himself in Washington.
Has -- -- with all of -- -- -- and foundations and books and movies.
And all of this stuff.
Where does the relief for him.
Excellent question because I think what what is his role going to be at the convention a member.
He called Mitt Romney a liar -- after his record and -- when a lot of Republicans thought it would went way too far.
Weighing.
-- and so I think his role the convention's going to be interesting I don't think -- he's not gonna run again you know I had 806869.
Years old self.
I don't Republicans on capitol and not fond of Newt Gingrich so when he goes from here I'm not so sure maybe -- -- -- the business world.
The first -- he has to pay off this debt is massive amount of debt he's amassed over the course these last couple months of his campaign.
And I think it's very interesting that he is coming out endorsing governor Ronnie today and you look at.
-- top Rick santorum's top advisor John Gray -- was very clear when he told the national review.
That Santorum and -- -- gonna have their own little -- times but.
Dad is off the table as -- they're not talking campaign debt.
Well good you know for.
Gingrich you'll always remember Hillary Clinton still has campaigned at it very commonplace in Washington.
That he John glad I was told today ran for president in what 1988.
As -- -- -- -- still technically has some campaign debt on the bucks.
So the big Kerry campaign dad Tim Pawlenty just retired his Romney helped him retire his.
Santorum and Gingrich -- -- and are taking very different approaches to this.
Gingrich is.
Making an -- -- he is saying.
I -- -- you beat me and so I'm an anti government sort Santorum is being -- KG negotiator.
Tell me about those two -- Well I think was Santorum is a tricky one because he says he regretted endorsing Romney -- So witnesses tricky line so I think he's got -- negotiate and clearly Santorum and Gingrich both had good runs as they made the final four there and done it and no one expected either one of them didn't to go -- as far as I went and Santorum has a different future he can run again and I think he probably will run again.
But at some point Rick santorum's gonna -- -- -- Let's see what VS no seniors says someday we're going to have a base on the moon what's so funny about that.
It's true it's -- it it would be super cool to have a base on the moon DSL senior but.
The problem for Gingrich.
Has been and that -- that he's not a disciplined campaign -- he gets off message when you hear her.
Strict.
Discipline on the trail somebody like George W.
Bush to -- like Mitt Romney.
Who is right on the money.
Did Gingrich do any harm to the notion of some more freewheeling -- candidates did you think.
I think.
Any thing if you can't see anything for campaigning he.
Reinforced the idea that perhaps you can win is an upstart not win well you can perform better than people think you will perform without a traditional campaign infrastructure especially.
-- -- I think he did a good job proving that he proved he's the kind of candidate and not every candidate for president is.
Who needs did a lot of advisors around him and does well performs well a lot of guys.
-- several batches of advisors.
The -- in the Internet by the way likes the moon base.
-- scribbling says.
The moon base idea was brilliant and insane I loved it reminded me.
A little bit of what it looks like when American -- so they're there and you dream bigots but sometimes there are dangers.
And intuitive.
And -- work Gingrich.
Team stormed out of South Carolina and he now has the distinction an historical first.
Of the first Republican.
Since the modern air since 1982.
Won the South Carolina primary but not -- want to win the Republican nomination yet storm that -- South Carolina -- -- very hard on Mitt Romney he went down to Florida angry.
And brought this righteous rage against Romney.
And his work in the private sector and those things down to Florida and now he basically admit that it totally blew up in his.
As it did I mean anything this is fun isn't calling himself an historian and when you look at that Florida debate that is that was the key moments -- that Mitt Romney showed up and he's arrested Gingrich -- that debate we had not seen Mitt Romney before.
And that's salvage the nomination I think there.
For -- any remembers your panel called Newt Gingrich the front runner.
Right after he lets anyone -- on South Carolina.
History shows -- you know it.
-- he's -- front runner twice during this kind of have November and January.
He's the front runner if you call record with -- South Carolina Rick Perry dropped out endorsed him surveillance -- -- it it looked like it was starting to happen yes I heard McCain endorsed him at some point yet.
And it looked like you might have just been about to happen from -- went down to Florida.
He swung too hard Romney found is a game and it went away so quickly it like evaporated.
Now I -- to ask you don't wanna change topics slightly there's great chat going on here.
So keep it up and then you've always.
Gets you going.
I appreciate that but I wanna talk about that another person who's still running for president is Ron -- who.
While nobody's been watching has been accruing victories.
In contest now -- RNC rules say.
-- to have one plurality in five contests in order to have your name put in on the first ballot.
At the convention that's that's that's what the -- as part of Gingrich dropping -- was he was never gonna get to if you're never gonna give his name put into nomination.
Ron Paul depending on how everything gets counted up in Iowa.
Alaska he he all of these caucus votes that are still out there where the winner doesn't get determine and really until the state convention and delegates are chosen -- -- could technically already have five.
Victories that would put him in for the first on the first ballot.
Does that still matter.
I think in the long run you know if for a week in August or early September rather in Tampa it matters a little bit -- -- mean from post it.
-- -- going to become the nominee but that he can do what Gingrich said he was going to do and have an effect.
On and live platform or have an effect on the discussion get a primetime speaking -- something like that.
I think he could I think it's definitely in the cards especially if he continues on this happen in many ways is in this.
But many people have bought Ron Paul -- wanted all along what he promised -- do this is what he wants he wants to bring up issues like the gold standard and he wants to try and get something like this tried his darnedest to get it in the platform of the national parties so this is in his goal all along I think.
It is surprising rather -- do Republican Party in just.
Four years ago where Ron Paul was the -- where it would be could be this sport in every today with seeing who could black.
Ron Paul artist Rudy Rudy Giuliani and John McCain would basically take turns pummeling Ron Paul and writing him this time around over the course of these twenty debates.
Kid gloves.
Very gingerly treatment of Ron Paul and do you expect to see Ron Paul -- a headline speaker at the convention.
I do like I think he will he -- not endorse McCain 2008 was not of the convention I think that Mitt Romney and Ron Paul have some type of deal.
Because Romney needs those supporters and he needs to -- -- -- -- he's -- -- at -- convention -- and I think -- Need endorsed some of his proposals on the Federal Reserve is is that a lot of monetary policy -- so.
I think there's a potential pretty -- remember.
Ron -- son senator Paul Rand Paul maybe going to present down roads around -- are obviously thinking along those lines it.
And remember there's a lot of college students in North Carolina Virginia and Iowa three states that Mitt Romney very much would like to win.
