Out of the blind Chinese dissident who was hiding out in the United States embassy in Beijing now says he wants to come in the United States.
But does United States know that former UN ambassador John Bolton joins -- -- answer.
We didn't.
Have so what is the situation right now Beijing as you see it from the side of the world.
Well I think we've got a he had train -- in process here.
The dissident Chen Rong Chang is outside the American Embassy meaning he's no longer under.
Our protection he's saying that day he left because Chinese authorities were threatening to kill -- wife.
And he now says he wants to leave China and come to the United States the State Department is denying big chunks of that so we've got a real disconnect between.
What our State Department thought they were doing and what this now very vulnerable a Chinese dissident -- was happening.
Yeah he's very -- was not hospital and and I'm not I'm a little bit curious about one thing and that's it out I had some communication from a US official in Beijing.
Who has said that at no time and I and I trusses of Asia.
And at no time and when he's in the Emerson -- asked to go to the United States they asked him repeatedly in her -- repeatedly -- you want to remain in China to continue his work so much at I'm somewhat sympathetic that -- into this situation -- -- I think that he's saying different things at different times he's uncertain.
I don't know if it's because he's terrified or because he's confused -- because he's got other problems going up.
But in India I think the heat the US embassy there's been a little bit -- run around.
Well.
I must say though the State Department is saying contradictory things -- let's take the claim.
That he has made repeatedly that US officials told him that the Chinese were threatening to kill -- wife now there's a pretty important point.
And the State Department says officially -- no that's not the story but in the New York Times it will appear tomorrow quoting an unnamed official.
-- Jayne pearl was an experienced international reporter says that they didn't tell China Americans did tell John.
That he would not see his wife who was in Beijing and less he left the embassy that is to say left American protection.
And they then said.
She the wife would be sent back to mr.
-- home village in Shandong.
Where no one could guarantee her safety.
That's what the American official is saying they told -- now that sounds a lot like.
Nice wife he got there be a shame if anything happened two or so or five -- in Chen's position it sounds to me like.
He didn't think American officials were telling him his wife was in danger what that was really powerful incentive to leave.
Where what -- we -- -- the nicest man I dissident shows up at our doorstep in Beijing he's got a family someplace he didn't bring -- spam -- Out what are we to do I mean if Wallace said -- and then what do we think you know while the flight is gonna have problems and I think that's by the first thing we all thought as the -- family we won't what are we to do it in that instant.
Well -- we are committed by our own -- to grant political asylum to people in the -- well founded fear of persecution.
If he asked that.
It is also the case once he crosses that doorway into the American Embassy the whole world is different.
In Chinese eyes and Chinese official lies that's virtually an act of treason and this is where there's another important point.
The Chinese have demanded an American apology.
And a commitment that we no longer use unusual means to get.
At people like -- into the embassy what do they mean by that.
Let me tell you -- and if you're -- blind.
Chinese man walking on crutches.
Toward the American Embassy.
You're not gonna get there with your ID -- being not being checked by the Chinese security guards outside I think what happened here.
Is that -- was taken into the American Embassy in an official American car.
Which the Chinese security guards dare not intercept so if that's true if if there was any American assistance to getting into the embassy.
The the State Department Secretary Clinton should have known in advance.
That this was going to be a major incident I I think this is being but I -- just as active diplomatic malpractice under way.
I think -- changes the dynamics of we almost went -- -- housing data we gave the ride there and we had I think we have every got -- the embassy add to me makes a big honestly don't know what I defensive end.
I -- -- look he's blind it -- a good question I mean how they get there I mean we can step it back to me how to.
First -- -- -- number watch -- lay out how far as this home from the embassy in how to get there I didn't drive their seventh somebody out there was I think there's a lot more that we don't know it's beyond me as it inside the embassy from from last stand is that he does he said he wanted to go to the -- -- -- go to the United States and I think that's only complicated thing is that yes I know I have no.
Though so no idea what happened beyond that.
Look ultimately of course he would prefer to remain in China but he's only got three options once he's inside that embassy go to the United States.
Stay in the embassy for god knows how long -- walked back outside.
And once he walks back outside he is -- dramatically greater risk.
You know the the administrative -- we cut this deal with is that we cut we we got assurances of his security oh really well that that's really a lot to go on isn't -- Is this family at risk could be also stays there -- released and and I think.
Amid this their families -- president recipe goes United States alone spam was it -- stays there ramps up that was at recipe goes out of me this spam is at -- at least I am.
Assume no matter what.
That the family was at risk when he escaped house arrest that that first at apple -- rather well yes.
That the family -- -- the question now is are they any safer now that he's out of the embassy and the answer to that is certainly not what.
-- possible way do we have to make the Chinese live up to a commitment.
To treating securely we do know and there's no ambiguity about this and I Chinese authorities were resting his colleagues.
And I got a -- -- yeah I'm sure have a lot more this thank you sir.
Straight ahead.
