He's taken to dividing the American people.
He's taken to finding scapegoats.
For his own failures finding some way to explain why it is that three and a half years into his presidency.
This economy is still bumping along the bottom.
Was presumptive Republican nominee -- wrong day.
Advancing his argument against President Obama on the economy saying not only that the president has bad economic policies but that -- rhetoric.
Is even hurting the economy itself by -- what what -- says is attacking success.
And this is power play I am -- firewall.
And Mitt Romney is very happy when he gets to talk about the economy.
It's it's certainly where he's the most comfortable and it's -- it's the case he wants to prosecute against Barack Obama.
Will the facts and figures comport with his argument and will the nation's attitude fit the mood for change on the economy -- -- CEO president.
Will figure that we're also gonna talk about our Chinese dissident.
And this situation is that's playing -- and how that could shape the elections in the fall we will also talk to for the first time ever on this big show -- inhibitor one of my very favorite columnists in the whole world he's wonderful so I -- gush about that later.
Of -- now let me gosh about Marjorie Clifton.
She is -- principal at Clifton consulting she plays for the blue team.
You can read her -- thousand.
That is accurate don't -- these things are accurate -- -- offense Politico and Politico whenever.
And -- match -- he is the former White House political director to president George W.
He is very much of the red team welcome back to the show thanks Chris OK so.
Jobless numbers due out tomorrow.
Well actually we should clarify the number that's out today as number of people who sought unemployment insurance.
That doesn't tell us that much in a stagnant economy because.
When people don't look for work and things like that basically that's just a measurement of the size of the labor pool when you have essentially stagnant economy but -- -- comes out tomorrow is the Miguel.
It's the number of people who are actually working the number of jobs that were added in the previous month and everybody in town is very.
Wound up over this because the economists say that in keeping with the 2.2 percent growth rate this on the first quarter -- they're expecting a bad number.
So -- Marjorie.
What how will the president play at -- -- play.
Well I mean as.
As we know any election comes down not only to the economy but there's also the approval rating issue -- -- certainty to -- things and as you said Romney the economy is sort of his most winning.
So I think that the bill bill play is it always does Republicans will say this is not enough growth.
Democrats will say this is -- not a positive staying in and trying to reset expectations -- the American people so it's I mean it's a pretty standard response but I think the reason it's -- key right now.
Is that in terms of the Romney election campaign.
Is that the economy is his best that he's not winning on social issues right now he's had a rough week with women he's had a rough week with.
Gay rights he had a rough week.
Barry he's had a rough time with Hispanics because a lot of what he had to do indeed the primary season was played that extreme conservatism.
And so now he's got to get to that middle ground to try to really take take the field.
I can tell by the slant of your odd match you have a different view.
Yeah I think -- -- primary process and start they're very fast which.
I think if you look at the types of positions that governor Romney had to take into wells in the mainstream.
Where the American people want him to be especially when it comes to trim the size -- government getting government spending under control when it comes to these jobless numbers.
The first Friday of the month is a very scary time for -- White House staff because you've been they have that right you go to that war room and you're trying to -- those numbers in -- hoping here's the inside story.
You're hoping that the jobs created or.
Greater than 250000.
Right because if not you're actually citing back Obama's been grassy.
Every quarter or every every announcement that is below 250000.
And what's going -- not going down so it sounds like it's positive.
But it's peer behind it is negative to -- 220 Israel breakeven point to fifty is actually bring the number -- right and if the president were to see numbers that -- at 250.
Or so between now and the election he could he could very easily say.
They were under 8% now -- let's go in the right direction.
We're happy about says he cannot make that argument.
You know clearly economic arguments -- is a we have growth anybody knows the talking bad -- actually -- -- So Marjorie in 1992 and we've talked about this a -- George H.
When you put the numbers up on the board -- numbers weren't that bad he had the unemployment rate was relatively high at.
But the growth rate was at 5% it wasn't good enough to make people feel good.
Barack Obama would kill for those numbers those would be that good 92 numbers that Bill Clinton beat George H.
Bush -- And -- the head with them for many months.
Would be great the president would love to have them so can he make this sale of yes it's not good to.
But it's getting better and it's.
I mean he's definitely gonna try to make that say on the matter what I mean that's that's how politics works but there's another piece to it and again not the approval ratings.
And what we've seen over the past six incumbents you've gone into any kind of election season.
Where Obama is now around 50% mark is going to be absolutely critical that -- that ran in the 50% -- actually had a fighting chance and many of them one.
Where is anything below that with them in the dangers and especially with -- sort of a flailing economy isn't making that gang buster recovery that I think you would hope for.
So and you need to if Romney can play this in terms of the economy -- messaging around it.
It's either this guy's doing it wrong that this is really a problem -- laying out their own plan.
He laid out a 54 point plan back in 2011 it was a lot of points didn't a lot of the -- And laid out there about the tough thing to do.
And it didn't really get any traction -- right now you know his his angles gonna be this -- not making -- -- this isn't the right way and again he's -- should be the platform.
This is a big distinction is that George H.
Had inherited the crown from Ronald Reagan right the master of -- and the American economy and they looked at him and they found him wanting not everything.
But certainly -- management of the economy.
This is a case where Obama came in with a -- of people.
He was gonna change everything he was our hope user changed he's an unmitigated disaster in every single poll when it comes to this not just my opinion.
And that's to -- -- periodically update the economy and for his.
You know probably four point -- and each one of those four were daggers into the heart -- the American economy and they're saying look we just can't afford four more years of this type.
Economic disaster -- else you know our kids are unemployed we have economic insecurity stocks and houses are upside down.
It's like I think that Thompson is going to be what do you Italy out of the alternative.
Because I mean I think what the public does understand is that he was coming into a bigger mess than we've seen in a very long time and their -- forgetting about.
He is very good on social issues in the they're going to be a challenge I think for Romney who hasn't really found his.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Alexandra good -- out -- -- -- the blue it's not relative if we're talking about the places where it counts as Florida right.
North Carolina Virginia Pennsylvania Ohio Iowa Wisconsin and Michigan Nevada Colorado New Mexico threatened if I forgot your state -- -- -- but that's a left -- New Hampshire are New Hampshire.
But in those swing states social issues do matter right now if.
If the Romney campaign.
Believes that all need to talk about is the economy -- make a mistake it's primary.
Responsibility is to focus on the economy.
But it also has to demonstrate to the American people.
That it understands.
That the campaign the candidate understands the cultural issues that are facing the country.
What unfortunately too many voices on the left believe that in the Republican primary process that I think you said earlier that it dragged.
Governor Romney over to the right how was dating him for the First Amendment being dragged to the right how was standing up for traditional -- being object to the right.
These advertising -- she's actually mainstream America in the states with the swing voters not even the partisan voters in the states Chris that you listed.
They actually your net positive split -- -- and it.
And as I read that has to be the last apologize -- I -- you got over that it I don't know developers you guys.
Okay we've got to take a break we thank you both for being here for that.
Segregationist discussion that was that was quite good don't you think I do I should also point out that this is a good time for you follow me on Twitter at cease -- Walt every day you can get the power play that I -- Richard -- -- -- they showed your whole day in politics you will love having it.
