-- now to Capitol Hill where lawmakers are arguing over a bill to stop 78 billion dollars in cuts to the Pentagon.

There's a live look at the house floor -- the rhetoric has gotten fiery over this issue the White House is now threatening to -- Any bill that tries to block the defense spending cuts Paul Ryan says that these cuts he believes would be disastrous here's what he said.

That this sequester will decimate our military.

At a time when our men and women are overseas fighting a war -- Fina world that has become much more dangerous.

Issue's going to be -- care more about protecting these tax breaks for the very wealthy where they care more about protecting defense spending.

-- -- that's the battle on house Democrats are pushing for an alternative plan.

That would end of the tax breaks to large oil company is.

Virginia Republican Randy Flores is the chairman of the house armed services readiness subcommittee he's heading to the hill to cast his vote on this issue as soon as -- -- done here so represented a thanks for make some time for us this morning good morning TO.

Good morning Martha -- Chris van Holland in the argument is that Republicans don't want to that they want to make cuts to food stamps and social service programs.

Including a number of Medicaid -- health system for the port.

Social services to block grants to states.

That's their argument that true.

Well Martha it's not everybody watched denies that the reality is that we had the president.

With an 825 billion dollar stimulus package that failed the three and a 47 billion -- of interest on that that's exactly equal to the cuts that we're facing.

Martha just over six months we're going to be facing over a trillion dollars in cuts to our national defense.

-- moving us dangerously close to a point -- will no longer be able to guarantee the safety and security of the United States and our allies.

The air force alliance had to -- put them on the ragged edge the navy says we'll have fewer ships and we've had a hundred years.

We're looking at pink slipping as many as a 150 to 200000.

Active duty individuals.

And sector defenses so that could cost one point five.

Million jobs across the country we just gotta stop that -- If I guess one of the questions that will.

Comes up for people is why why just defense you know I mean if you -- -- have some -- in the budget.

It appears that the soul place that they're looking at doing them is in the defense budget.

And not and other areas right.

Well Martha the reality is this administration has not -- a very strong priority on defense who are veterans and that's while we were up until 230 changing some of the things they are trying to -- Martha just one example they want to cut out seven -- these Arnold rust buckets these are good.

Vessels and the reason they want to do it.

Is just because of saving dollars but the result would be we would be reducing the twice the firepower the entire surface capacity of the British navy.

That's why we're trying to have a tour across the country to bring this to the attention the American people.

They can go on our web -- defending our defenders and found out just how bad these cuts are gonna date for national defense.

Yeah I guess you know I think people -- say there has when when they listen to this whole conversation they can't understand how could possibly be that almost three years have gone by without a budget.

We watch the sort of cliff -- moment of raising the debt ceiling.

Several months ago and that pushed us to this moment where they're trying to now prevent the sequestration that would kick in these defense cuts adding people -- just you know you see in the numbers of the poll members of congress are just abysmal.

You know so so what do you propose to get past that.

Well Martha I think three things one we stayed up till 230 last time the arms services committee trying to change some of this -- Second thing will vote on a budget today -- actually stop these cuts.

Third thing is will launch a tour that begins next week going across the country would Begin in Virginia go to Florida and California Arkansas Montana -- -- Trying to let the American people tell their story about the importance of not having these tremendous defense got.

You -- out reaching out to the other side is saying look you know we know you don't wanna see these defense cuts can you give us this much it will give you that much.

Any conversation like that happening at a whatsoever.

Well Martha it is in fact on our tour will have to Democrats and Republicans that'll be there who concerned about these cuts.

And remember Martha it's important -- note.

That the house has passed a budget is the -- that refuses to pass a budget.

May not be a perfect budget that but they ought to pass something so we can least at a conference -- try to reconcile some of those differences we can't let this happen to the American people in the defense of our country.

Or balance all this on the backs of our veterans respect folks are pretty -- -- act congressman we -- you and both sides of this some -- his credit Angela thank you very much for being here thanks for that.
